Assistant Manager Kim Hates Idols
Chapter 363: Phone Connection.
The drama and "Idol Annals of the Dynasty" filming came to my calendar like stepping stones. Not a single day was boring.
"Still, I think variety shows are easier."
Last night, I returned to the company looking like a dishcloth that had been wrung out about a hundred times. Playing a rich, hot-tempered chaebol heir was exhausting.
But "Idol Annals of the Dynasty"? I could say what I wanted, do what I had to do, and still get paid for it. My mindset was slowly turning more positive.
In the conference room, the members argued over the tracklist of Ond’s album, our cover target.
Among them, the most fierce ones were, without failing expectations, the sandpaper dapper duo.
"A calm one for self-PR... no, we did that during the proclamation ceremony. This time we have to go with a different look."
"With how many steps were in that choreography, how is that ‘calm’?"
"That was only in the latter half! It wasn’t even like idol dance."
"Is the genre important? It just has to be dance."
"It’s 'Idol Annals of the Dynasty'!"
Leaving the two of them busy shouting, Lee Cheonghyeon wiped under his nose with a finger.
"Haha, this is trouble."
At this point, I was thinking maybe we shouldn’t take first place this time. I couldn’t show the fans this chaos.
"Let’s summarize once before moving on. We’re choosing between 『Memory』 and 『Ground』, right? Joowoo and Cheonghyeon will go with whatever the members decide."
Jeong Seongbin diligently took stock of the situation.
"Cheonghyeon, are you really okay with everything...?"
Park Joowoo asked, looking at Lee Cheonghyeon. Because he knew his dongsaeng was usually very assertive.
However, Lee Cheonghyeon was nonchalant.
"I’m going to take away all the hyungs’ speaking rights when it’s our turn to perform. It’s a strategic retreat for the future."
"You’re plotting openly."
At my words, Lee Cheonghyeon winked. Suggesting to at least give the wink to the camera if possible, I politely pointed with two hands towards the camera filming Lee Cheonghyeon’s line.
"It’s hard to narrow this down..."
Jeong Seongbin looked genuinely troubled. They had a mountain of work to do, and they were stuck right at the starting line.
Moreover, Jeong Seongbin was a good-natured leader type. If possible, he would want to make a choice that satisfied everyone.
"Let’s change the starting point. We had that idea notebook, right?"
As soon as I finished speaking, Park Joowoo opened a new window. It was the "Spark Idea Note (For Filming)" page created newly after hearing that Parte seemed to be copying Spark’s concept.
"Let’s pick a concept we want to show the fans first, then choose the song that fits it best. Both songs are great—so let’s go with the one that matches a genre or concept we’ve never tried."
At my words, the members’ eyes turned to the large monitor.
"Jewelry shop... was written by Iwol hyung, right?"
"I did write it, but save it. It’s not time to bring it out yet."
"You’ll probably wrap lace around your neck three times."
Lee Cheonghyeon joked frivolously. Just you wait. The day we open the jewelry shop, I’ll put only you in a solo showcase, I swear.
"How about this...?"
While everyone talked over each other, Park Joowoo’s cursor circled one spot.
"Teacher?"
"It’s a concept we haven’t done, and a style often requested at fan meetings......"
"Who wrote that?"
At Choi Jeho’s question, the proposer shyly raised his hand. It was Jeong Seongbin.
"Because the fans really liked the daycare teacher bit we did...!"
So that’s the reason. I thought you wanted to wear a modernized Hanbok and hold a bamboo flute or something.
Kang Giyeon, who’d been watching the keywords, looked interested too.
"I think it’s good that we can show a mature side from 『Flowering』 and 『With List』 which were student concepts. Does the teacher here mean subject teachers? Like Korean, Math?"
"I haven’t thought about it in detail, but I think Jeho hyung would suit being a P.E. teacher......!"
Choi Jeho almost made a face like he’d bitten into something bad, then stopped himself. He seemed to think he could manage his expression shamelessly assuming I wouldn’t know, but over here, I could figure out his mood just by one eyebrow raising. Once filming is over, you’re booked for 100 hours of nagging.
"If we’re going with the teacher concept, 『Memory』 would be good. I think just changing the lyrics a little would work. Shall we get permission from the sunbaenims?"
Lee Cheonghyeon pulled out his phone decisively. Permission for arrangement and lyric changes was already granted at the point of doing mutual covers, but it became like this because they told us to make a phone connection per group to get footage for the broadcast.
He dialed, and the call connected almost immediately.
"— Yes, Spark friends~!"
"Hello, sunbaenim! This is Spark’s Cheonghyeon!"
"— Don’t just say hello. Spark’s songs are too energetic."
"We feel like we’re going to fall backward singing sunbaenim’s songs too!"
Ond had two more members than us. Thanks to utilizing the advantage of a multi-member group, Ond’s songs had a very large proportion of singing, and there were many parts where they quickly exchanged lines or sang together. It was a harsh task for Lee Cheonghyeon, who took on almost all of Spark’s rap alone.
"— So? Why are you calling? We’re in a meeting. Don’t tell me... you’re spying? Playing mind games?"
"Come on, we’re not rude enough to snoop on our seniors like that!"
"— But we are. What song did you pick?"
A heavy preemptive strike came from the sunbaenims who had some variety show experience. Lee Cheonghyeon’s eyes widened. I hurriedly snatched the phone from his hand before the flow went over.
"Sunbaenim, this is Iwol! We’ve made zero progress, so I shamelessly called to spy on you."
"— I find Mr. Iwol a bit scary... Anyone else want to take the call?"
These people, really. Where can you find a junior as polite to seniors as me?
The other side of the receiver was noisy then became quiet.
"— Ah, these hyungs treat the maknae too poorly."
It was Doah who took the phone. In our team, the younger you are, the higher your rank. Look at Lee Cheonghyeon and Kang Giyeon. How confident and decisive they are.
Since both sides were filming meeting scenes and had a lot to do, the essential talk wrapped up quickly. They even told us to go wild and change things however we wanted.
"— But if we wear school uniforms, I feel like people might throw rocks at us. Can we change the outfits?"
"Go with a Dream and Adventure Land, Everland-style concept! Everyone will understand!"
"— No. We’ll subtly switch it out."
With the implication that they would perform a song with a school uniform outfit, the phone connection ended. I waited for the sunbaenim to hang up first, and only returned the phone to Lee Cheonghyeon after the screen completely turned off.
"Okay, now all problems are solved."
"Feels like the sunbaenims’ problems just got worse, though."
Kang Giyeon tackled, but I didn’t reply. They could take care of their own business.
"Then now... shall we decide on the subjects?"
It was time for the fun part—assigning roles. We pulled up a "Subject Teacher Outfit Board" and launched into a heated debate over who would wear the middle-aged-teacher shirts.
Anyone who went through school probably had one or two favorite teachers. Whether it was a respected teacher or a fun teacher.
Spark also had unforgettable teachers. We decided to implement these teachers as realistically as possible. The moment we got back to the dorm, we tore through our closets, turning them into chaos.
The most authentic outfits, without question, belonged to the actual high schoolers.
"Behold, my styling."
I almost fainted when Lee Cheonghyeon walked out of his room. Square silver-rimmed glasses, a golf-wear top, dress pants, a thick leather belt that tore a hole in the space-time continuum.
He was even wearing a black watch on his wrist. Brown leather belt and black leather watch. I felt dizzy.
"What are those clothes?"
Kang Giyeon asked in horror. There were plenty of golf wear with pretty necklines these days. Where did he get that ambiguous collared shirt that was neither a shirt nor a tee? It was maddening.
The pants were no joke either. It was definitely a wide-fit retro-style luxury setup when worn with a jacket, but wearing slippers underneath turned it into a teacher’s office look instantly.
"Did you buy that second-hand?"
Choi Jeho chimed in, having become a used-goods expert from hanging out with Joowoo.
"Do not be surprised. This is... plain clothes I ‘originally’ had."
"Oh my god......"
Park Joowoo clasped his hands over his mouth. To him, a pioneer of all-white fashion, Lee Cheonghyeon’s color combination seemed excessively unconventional.
Anyway, it was fascinating. I’d never seen Cheonghyeon dressed like that before. Clothes really could either make or break a person depending on how they were combined.
"And we’re not done. I’ll do an impression."
"You’re the worst."
Encouraged by Kang Giyeon’s enthusiastic support, Lee Cheonghyeon slightly pushed up his glasses.
"Hey! Who’s that guy sleeping in the back! Wake him up!"
"Is the sleeping guy perhaps Choi Jeho?"
"Your class is the slowest in progress! If you don’t want make-up classes, focus today. Understand?"
Lee Cheonghyeon roamed the living room, tapping his shoulder with a 30cm ruler. I felt like I should get a nonexistent textbook from somewhere and open it.
Choi Jeho took on the role of P.E. teacher thanks to Jeong Seongbin’s active support. When he asked if he could wear practice clothes, I told him to shut up and wait.
Then I left a comment on Dotion asking them to get a pretty anorak set. I couldn’t let ✪ Nоvеlіgһt ✪ (Official version) the team’s center be a middle-aged male P.E. teacher. He had to be the handsome young teacher who used to be an athlete.
I wanted to assign Park Joowoo as a home economics teacher, but due to the opinion "Park Joowoo would totally suit being the school nurse..." that suddenly popped up from somewhere, he ended up being the guardian of the infirmary. Even matching just a cozy knit turtleneck with neat pants suited Park Joowoo’s atmosphere well.
"But why am I a Korean teacher?"
"Among us, there’s probably no one who reads texts with their heart as much as you."
Lee Cheonghyeon resolved his friend’s curiosity. Kang Giyeon still looked like he didn’t understand, but we all thought there was no better subject for Kang Giyeon.
Kang Giyeon’s teacher-like aspect could be glimpsed in the fact that he consistently attached periods in group chat rooms. His sharp personality also fit the image a Korean teacher gave.
Jeong Seongbin took on a social studies subject teacher. Specifically, a Sociology and Culture teacher.
"Seongbin hyung just looks like a sociology teacher."
Saying this, Lee Cheonghyeon abruptly assigned it to Jeong Seongbin. Being the epitome of diligence while having a gentle side, he seemed like he would softly dominate the students. Flattered, Jeong Seongbin gladly accepted his role.
Lastly, I......
"Hyung doesn’t even need to find clothes. You’re already complete."
......became the head of the student department.
A terrifying young boomer teacher who had been in the teaching profession for over 5 years, nicknamed Viper, and whose subject was Technology.
