Captain Xavier, Your Wife Has Signed the Divorce Papers
Chapter 54: No Ability, Just a Shabby Appearance
"Come back and visit when you have time."
"I will."
After exchanging pleasantries, Wren Wynter returned to her office. Joy Lynch and Claire Shaw were both standing at the door.
They both knew today was her last day.
"Wren, I just got here not too long ago, and now you’re leaving. I’m going to miss you so much." Joy Lynch sighed. "But I’m genuinely happy for you. You won’t have to watch that scumbag and that fake innocent girl put on their lovey-dovey act anymore."
Wren Wynter poked her on the forehead, amused. "It’s not like we can’t see each other again. When you have a day off, we’ll ask Crystal to go shopping with us."
"Okay, you said it! You have to treat me to dinner!"
"No problem."
"Wren, I’ll miss you too."
For the past month, Claire Shaw had been working under Wren Wynter and had come to rely on her for major matters.
Now that Wren was leaving, she couldn’t help but feel sad.
"Just keep doing your best, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. If you have any problems, you can ask Joy."
Tears welled up in Claire Shaw’s eyes as she nodded forcefully.
「Meanwhile, at the cemetery.」
Kaden Xavier didn’t yet know that Wren Wynter had resigned.
Today was the anniversary of Asher Lynch’s death, and he came to visit him every year on this day.
Seraphina Sutton held a bouquet of chrysanthemums, dressed in a white maternity dress.
Kaden Xavier was also carrying several things.
They had just entered the cemetery when they saw a couple standing in front of Asher Lynch’s grave from a distance.
The man had his arm around the woman’s convulsing shoulders as she sobbed quietly.
It was Asher Lynch’s parents.
Seraphina Sutton’s grip on the bouquet tightened. From the bottom of her heart, she did not want to run into Asher’s parents.
Asher’s parents disliked her. They felt she wasn’t the type to settle down and live a proper life.
’They have no skills, just a pathetic, impoverished air about them.’
"Sir, Ma’am, long time no see."
Kaden Xavier was the first to break the silence.
Mr. and Mrs. Lynch looked over at Kaden Xavier and Seraphina Sutton. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The moment Mrs. Lynch saw Seraphina Sutton, her pupils constricted. She cried out and started to charge at her.
"You jinx! How dare you come to our Asher’s grave! You have some nerve!"
"Asher started getting sick ever since he met you! You’re a man-killer, a jinx!"
Seraphina Sutton hid behind Kaden Xavier in fear, timidly peeking out from behind him.
"Ma’am, I’m sorry. It’s all my fault. It would have been better if Asher had never met me. I’m so sorry..."
As she spoke, Seraphina Sutton started to cry pitifully. She let go of Kaden Xavier’s clothes and moved to kneel.
Kaden Xavier caught her and held her up, his brow furrowed.
"Seraphina, this has nothing to do with you." He paused. "Sir, Ma’am, Seraphina and Asher loved each other. Asher’s illness had nothing to do with Seraphina."
"How is it not related?! If Asher hadn’t been trying to buy her all those luxury goods, he wouldn’t have run off to work a part-time job every day after training! He worked himself sick and eventually died! It was all because of her vanity!"
Mrs. Lynch collapsed to the ground, sobbing as she accused Seraphina Sutton. A heavy air of grief enveloped the four of them.
Mr. Lynch silently lowered his head and pulled his wife into his arms.
"Kaden, I know you and Asher were close back in school, and you’re only looking after this woman for his sake. But if it weren’t for her, our Asher would never have died."
Kaden Xavier lowered his gaze.
He knew about all this. He had tried to talk to Asher about it back then.
But Asher had just looked content, smiling as he clapped him on the shoulder.
"Kaden, you don’t get it. When you love someone, you have to give them everything, without holding back."
Kaden Xavier could only sigh, thinking Asher had been too naive.
He had never believed in love. Ever since he was a child, he’d seen how many women his father kept on the side, and how his own mother would become hysterical.
"Sir, Ma’am, it’s all my fault. If you’re going to blame someone, blame me. It’s all my fault. I’m the one who hurt Asher. I let Asher down."
Her face streaked with tears, Seraphina apologized profusely, trying to use the same tactic to win Kaden Xavier’s pity.
This time, however, Kaden’s heart remained completely unmoved.
’If it weren’t for the fact that she was carrying Asher’s child, he wouldn’t have stopped her.’
With a complicated expression, Kaden Xavier looked at Mr. and Mrs. Lynch, his thin lips parting slightly.
"Sir, Ma’am, I know you’re angry, but Seraphina is pregnant with Asher’s child. The doctor said her pregnancy is unstable and she can’t handle too much stress."
’Asher again.’
A hint of darkness flashed in Seraphina Sutton’s eyes. Her nails dug into her palms as she lowered her head and bit down hard on her lower lip.
The moment Kaden Xavier finished speaking, surprise crept onto the faces of Asher’s parents.
"Are you saying... her stomach..."
Mrs. Lynch covered her mouth, pointing a trembling finger at Seraphina.
Kaden Xavier nodded.
Mrs. Lynch burst into tears, wailing mournfully, "What a cruel fate! This is truly a cruel, tragic fate!"
A complicated look filled Mr. Lynch’s face. He walked to the side and silently lit a cigarette.
"Ma’am, I know it’s my fault. Once I give birth to the child, I’ll accept any punishment you want to give me. But the child is innocent!"
Seraphina Sutton wiped her tears, one hand on her stomach, as her tears slid down her cheeks and fell to the ground.
Kaden Xavier picked up the flowers that had fallen on the ground and placed them in front of Asher Lynch’s grave. Staring at the bright, radiant smile on Asher’s tombstone photo, he made a resonant vow.
"Asher, don’t worry. I will take good care of Seraphina and your child."
"Kaden, his mother and I didn’t know about this."
Hearing this, Kaden Xavier looked at Seraphina Sutton.
Seraphina immediately stopped crying and answered pitifully, "I... I was afraid Sir and Ma’am would harm the baby. They’ve never liked me. What if they treated the baby badly because of me?"
"Nonsense!" Mr. Lynch frowned. "This child is Asher’s. No matter how much we dislike you, we wouldn’t do anything to you for Asher’s sake."
Seraphina walked over to Kaden Xavier’s side and carefully tugged on his clothes.
"I was just so scared, that’s why I didn’t tell them. Kaden, please don’t misunderstand, I..."
"Misunderstand what?"
Kaden Xavier was displeased. He stopped looking at Seraphina and instead walked over to Asher Lynch’s parents.
"Sir, Ma’am, rest assured, I will take good care of Seraphina until Asher’s child is born safely."
Mr. and Mrs. Lynch exchanged a look.
