Children of a Lesser God
Chapter 746: The Dangerous Man
While Laz continued to stay in his room, the captain began working towards his goal of isolating the young man, but fixing their relationship. As far as the captain was concerned, Laz couldn’t be trusted, but he also didn’t want to provoke him until help could arrive which meant living with a killer for several months. While this wasn’t ideal, he did read that Laz usually posed no threat to those who posed no threat to himself. One thing that the commander did not share with the captain was that Laz was an infected. As far as the commander was concerned, everyone on the base was just a normal human who had no way to deal with an infected. So if Laz decided to just off everyone, there would be nothing they could do about it. Instead, the report that Captain Blunt got just included that Laz had been wanted in the death of several military personal and had been on the run ever since. As the captain wasn’t American military, he strangely didn’t feel threatened after finding out this news. In fact, while thinking over everything, he even managed to convince himself that there was probably way more to the story and that Laz might have been a bit of a victim himself.
Not that he would let Laz off, just that he didn’t fully blame him for whatever actions he had taken that had led to this point. Pity wasn’t forgiveness.
As for telling the others, the captain debated it to himself time and time again after thinking he should tell them. After all, there was wisdom in the fact that the less people knew, the less they could worry or let on to Laz that they knew. The problem with that was the captain didn’t want the others to provoke Laz either even if the report said that they should be safe. As for the captain taking out the boy... He had considered that as well and figured it would be easy. But since they wanted the boy alive, locking him up and making him aware of the situation was something that had also been in the communication. If the kid managed to escape, they would hold him to account for it. And there wasn’t anything like a prison unit in the base anyway so keeping him locked up would be difficult if not impossible.
In the end, the captain decided on keeping things to himself although he hid the evidence and information that had been sent to him. He was asked to destroy it after he read it, but figured if it came down to it, he could use the information contained in it to prove to the others not to trust Laz if a situation did come up.
’At least they will have to believe me with this,’ Captain Blunt thought to himself.
After that, he went about his business searching the data and readouts about the area and checking for any signs of a gate within the scannable area. He didn’t want to admit he had been neglecting the duties assigned to him, but he kind of had been, instead making nice with the women of the base whenever he was able. But the reminded from head quarters was a bit of a wake up call.
In the coming days, Laz finally took time to leave his room as things in his mind started coming together. He took the time to spar with Saanvi regularly as she was the only one in the base able to put up a fight. They did so without energy involved and relied solely on skill, leading to some pretty interesting bouts between one another. Laz even stopped using techniques that involved overpowering Saanvi and stuck to nothing but pure technique and found it harder and harder to win. As for skill level, his was based on his strength while hers was based on skill and she was very skillful. Using one another as a sparring partner and learning from one another helped them immensely.
"Come on girl, you got this!"
"Lower your center, you’re too open to her with her height!"
"Ow... that’s got to hurt no matter how I look at it. Good thing they are both pretty durable," Dr. Anton said as Sven was shouting Laz some helpful reminders.
Even Jun and Shelly were looking on while cheering on Saanvi as they went at it.
By the time they were done, Sven handed the couple dollars over to the two woman and turned back to look at Laz.
"Listing bud... I want to keep betting on you... but you’re really not giving me a good reason to," Sven said shaking his head at the young man on the floor.
"I don’t believe I have ever said to bet on me. I just found it kind of saddening that all of you were just constantly cheering on Saanvi kicking my ass all the time."
"Well, once I said anything nice about it, these two came after my wallet. So that’s your fault," Sven said, pointing to Jun and Shelly.
"Be a little nicer to the boy hun. It’s bad enough he gets the floor mopped with his face almost every time they fight. Least we can do is be in his corner when it happens?" Dr. Anton said to Sven with a laugh.
"I’m... not sure if you’re insulting me or encouraging me," Laz said to the doctor while standing.
"A bit of both dear. A bit of both," the doctor replied with a laugh.
"SO... that’s like twenty to two now?" Saanvi said, taking a towel from Shelly and wiping her head.
"Oh so now you’re keeping track huh?" Laz said, grabbing his own towel.
"Of course I am. Why wouldn’t I?" Saanvi shot back with a laugh. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
"I have nothing to say to that..."
"I get that relying on pure techniques is good for you. But I don’t see how that’s helping her at all," Sven said to Laz as he stood there.
"Well... It does in the sense that I learn pretty damn fast, so to keep up, she has to learn faster. Her techniques when she began were sloppy, hence why even without strength, I scored those two wins in a row. After that, she knew that she had to take things seriously with me. What worked the last time wouldn’t work the next time. So if she failed to improve, then once we passed a certain point, she wouldn’t be able to win, strength or no strength."
"Oh? I guess that does make sense. But you can’t keep monopolizing her time like this. She does have a job to do..." Sven said, but before Laz could answer, Saanvi replied to him.
"Oh I’ve been doing it, without a problem. I know how to track weather and fill out charts, graphs and spreadsheets. This just gives me a much needed distraction so I don’t get bored with it. Besides, weather’s fun and all, but since it’s the same thing day after day here, this has become by go to in and effort to relieve boredom. You’d be surprised how tossing him around helps to relieve stress!" Saanvi replied with a laugh.
"Oh. You don’t have to apologize hunny. Sven feels the same way with me, right baby?" Dr. Anton said while playfully poking Sven. Seeing him turn red from this announcement got everyone laughing.
"Saanvi and Shelly, I need some of your latest reports emailed to me asap. Oh. I see you’re out of your room Laz. Sorry about the way I acted. Guess it’s just the stress of the job that sometimes gets to me. I’ll try to keep it under control better from now on and I hope I didn’t offend you. I’ll take my dinner in my office again, thanks!" And with that, the captain that appeared disappeared just as quickly, leaving everyone in a slightly stunned state.
"Was that... captain Blunt?" Jun was the first to ask.
"He has changed in the last few days, locking himself up in his office all hours of the day, requesting reports and doing... whatever the hell he is here to do..." Shelly mentioned.
"But for him to suddenly be nice to the kid is..." Sven started to speak.
"Not expected. The man is stubborn, too stubborn, to just change his ways without a reason," Dr. Anton finished for him.
"Did something happen between you two?" Saanvi then asked, turning to Laz.
"Not that I know of. This is the first time seeing him since that night and this is the first thing he’s said to me since then," Laz said, also with a feeling that something was off.
"Well, maybe the old bloke reflected on his mistakes and is taking a different path. Good for him. Least we won’t be having to walk in the eggshells around him from now on," Shelly stated, but the other’s weren’t too convinced.
"Alright. Well shower time anyway for you too. I’ve got to go get on dinner duty otherwise I will be delivering the man some energy bars and I don’t want him getting back to being a dick any time soon, no matter what the reason for the change," Sven said, walking out the door and heading for the kitchen.
"I’ll help. My projects are coming along nicely without me right now anyway," Dr Anton said before following the big man.
Laz made for the men’s showers while Jun, Shelly and Saanvi grouped up for a quick moment.
"I’ll forward him it after I get back from the shower. Just let him know when to expect it, Saanvi said to Shelly before heading to the woman’s shower.
"I wonder what he’s suddenly so interested in?" Shelly asked Jun as they exited the gym area.
"No clue. But I do know there is a lot of robotic reconnaissance gear in the hanger that they delivered last minute and hasn’t been used yet. I’m also not allowed to touch it until I get his go ahead, even for maintenance reasons. I can’t say for sure, but it seems like he was tasked with looking for something," Jun stated to Shelly.
"What’s there to look for in this giant wasteland of ice with rock underneath it?" Shelly questioned.
Jun just shrugged her shoulders.
...
As Laz was turning on the warm water he felt a slight breeze behind him. Not turning around, he simply said,
"You’re playing a dangerous game..."
"I know. And for some reason, it’s making me really horny..."
"You’re married."
"I’m sure he’s banging our housekeeper as we speak."
"Doesn’t make it right."
"No... your cock makes it right. Besides... one of the things I’ve figured out since I’ve grown into this power is that if I don’t seize every opportunity I can to get stronger, I’m just going to be another in a long line of fallen gods before anything has even begun."
Laz turned to the naked beauty standing just behind himself.
"You... know what lies out there?"
"The goddess in my bloodline both ascended and fell in this world. She knows many of it’s secrets."
"Are you afraid?"
"Why don’t you throw me around for a little bit and find out?"
