Dimensional Travels: World at War
Chapter 168: World as we know it
Eric and Mia arrived at HQ early. Mia had gathered all the documents they needed the night prior, so she carried a folder filled to the brim with papers. Eric had offered to carry it for her, but she refused.
"I am an intelligence officer, you dolt!" She said for the final time, smacking him playfully. "If I can't handle a few papers, I may as well resign." He laughed as they entered the command room.
Eric and Mia quieted down as they looked around the room. It was true, every member of the Alliance was there. Dragon King Tryasche was in the middle of lecturing his two senior advisers, and Eric had to hold back a chuckle. He leaned over and whispered into Mia's ear. "It looks like when Milano chews out Michael and I."
She ignored him as she opened the folder, spreading documents out in front of her. They were arranged in order so that if she was called upon, she could answer quickly and concisely.
Milano and Nieto were the last to enter the room. In a move that surprised Eric, Milano took the seat at the front of the table. Miher took the seat to his right, while Nieto took the seat to his left.
Milano looked around the room.
"Let us begin. I am sure you all are curious as to why I have asked you to be here. First, I would like to thank you for coming. The last two weeks have not been easy on anyone. Especially those of us still reeling from both the Dresken operation and Ark chaos. I ask that you all bear with me, as what we have deduced could lead to even worse consequences."
After Milano finished speaking, Eric noticed that Tryasche was tense. The Dragon Kings somber poker face was nowhere to be found as he glared down at the papers in front of him.
"What could be dire than a world ending mountain?" The Dragon King asked. "Did you not say that when you had access to all your weaponry from back home, this war would be won easily?"
Milano clasped his hands in front of him. "Your majesty, that would be the case if we knew where our weapons systems were, and who is where. That problem will be rectified soon. I ask that you remain seated. I promise that all your questions and concerns will be answered."
Tryasche realized he had stood up and bowed his head towards Milano. "I apologize, General Milano and President Nieto. I allowed my emotions to get the better of me."
Milano raised his hand as a gesture goodwill. "We do not fault you for your anger or frustration, your majesty. Mrs. Dryer, if you would please."
Every head in the room turned to Mia almost simultaneously. Mia stood up and began passing around the papers that she had been carrying.
"I finally get to see Mia brief again."
Eric thought as he sifted through the documents. His eyes narrowed when he got to the pictures of satellite imagery pre and post merge.
Around the room, various gasps of surprise or shock could be heard. The leaders here had all been through dozens of cataclysmic events, and even in the last year, life altering events had become commonplace. What was shown on the documents was something no amount of training, trauma, or warfare could prepare anyone for.
Mia stood at the front of the room as the wall lit up with a projection. She pulled out a pointer, and nodded to the tech operating the slides.
"Riemskin and 6-8 operatives have been working with the intelligence sectors of both the Dwarves and Elves for the last two weeks. We have scoured various sources like the internet, news outlets, and geospatial surveys. What we have deduced is our working hypothesis. Next slide please."
Leaders around the room began taking notes as she spoke, with Tryasche staring blankly at one of the pages in his folder. His eyes were wide and his fingers quivered. "It can't be." He murmured.
Mia's ears twitched and she turned around. "Your Majesty? Is something the matter?"
Tryasche looked down at the paper he is holding. "There have been tales of beasts forgotten to time. Monsters whose rule is absolute in their territory. As you may know, monsters can evolve over time through absorbing enough mana. The beast you have pictured here is likely the last evolution of the so called 'T-rex' monster. Normally, the beast would need three hundred to four hundred years to reach such an evolution. My guess is that the influx of mana to highly concentrated regions caused a rapid mutation and evolution."
The room went quiet as Tryasche finished his explanation. Various other leaders looked down at the picture. Some were weary, others were shocked, and Nieto clenched his fist. Milano shot him a warning look, and the president refrained from speaking his thoughts.
Mia clapped her hands, getting the attention of the room. "The good news is that the monster was last seen entering Cartharic territory. We have ISR monitoring it 24/7, so if it moves, we will know."
A collective sigh of relief echoed throughout the room. Soldiers and leaders alike seemed to relax, the tension escaping their bodies.
"But that brings me to my next point. The civilians at Mega corporations in charge of maps and transportation have been in contact with myself and the rest of the team. We cross verified with Geospatial imagery and topographic analysis. It appears that when Earth and Brishan combined, the infrastructure and people from Earth made it over here. The land masses did not. Our scouts have been as far east as the new Esponia mountains, and they have confirmed a few cities. Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Hood of course. The cities from Texas are all here in Riemskin, spread approximately as far apart as they were on Earth. The only problem?"
She looked at Remory.
"The landmass of Texas doesn't seem to exist."
