Chapter 33: Chapter 33: Consecrated Peach Wood Sword

"I’m a graduate of Huazhong Medical University. I have the diploma."

Wen Ying looked at Li Min’s father, her expression serious and sincere. Her words made the corner of his mouth twitch. ’Is she messing with me?’

’I was asking which master she studied under, not for her academic qualifications!’

’Oh, well. I suppose people with real skills don’t like being asked questions.’

"Doctor Wen, I believe you. Would it be possible to get your contact information?" Li Min’s father had spent his whole life walking a fine line. He couldn’t claim to have any real abilities—it was just a way to make ends meet. But he held a deep, genuine reverence for this line of work, frustrated only by the fact he’d never met a true master, or perhaps had never been worthy of a master’s notice.

But now, after meeting Wen Ying, that long-dormant part of his heart began to stir restlessly.

"You can. If you need a medical consultation in the future, you can contact me to make an appointment."

Watching Li Min and her father leave, Wen Ying turned and walked deeper into the Ancient Street.

The crowds weren’t too thick. The sun broke through the clouds, and rays of light spilled onto the ground.

The humidity in the air was slowly evaporating, and as Wen Ying passed, more than a few gazes lingered on her.

[I don’t know why, but watching this scene just feels so... peaceful.]

[Can the streamer see our comments? I want to know if that last incident counts as one of the slots for today’s stream.]

[Doctor Wen is busy treasure hunting; what time does she have to look at us? Besides, with that pinhole-style camera, she can’t see the comments anyway! She’s not even holding her phone!]

"There’s one slot left. We’ll see if today’s spot goes to someone on this street, or to someone in the stream."

[GASP! The streamer can see our comments?!]

[She’s obviously just guessing! It has to be a coincidence! Have you all forgotten Doctor Wen’s profession? She’s a psychologist who’s a pro at deduction! Figuring out what we’re thinking is child’s play for her.]

[I was so scared I broke out in a cold sweat! Thank goodness Doctor Wen is still human!]

"Young lady, here to buy some antiques? Let me tell you, everything I have here has age and a story behind it. There’s plenty of good stuff; if you pass this up, you won’t get another chance! Buying a gift for an elder? Take a look at this snuff bottle. How about I give you a good price on it? If you don’t like that, check out this postage stamp. It was used by a very important person—it’s worth a fortune!"

The vendor’s wares were laid out on a special waterproof plastic sheet in front of him.

It had to be said, the selection was quite varied: cups, bowls, teapots, old books, small rocks, calligraphy brushes, wallets, bracelets, and other assorted trinkets.

Wen Ying hadn’t planned on stopping, but something caught her eye as she swept her gaze over the stall, and she came to a halt.

"Boss, can this wooden sword ward off evil spirits?"

The boss’s face twitched for a split second. He clearly thought this young woman’s question was at odds with her refined demeanor, but he was a professional, after all.

"Of course, it can! This is a Peach Wood Sword I bought from a Buddhist monk! If you want it... how about five thousand? I bought it for forty-eight hundred, so making just two hundred in profit isn’t asking too much, is it?" Within seconds, the boss had his spiel ready.

"Will you sell it for two hundred?"

[Boss: Five thousand. Doctor Wen: Two hundred! Aren’t you supposed to start by cutting the price in half? Doctor Wen’s haggling is on another level! The master of masters!]

[The boss is probably cursing her out in his head right now. I’m dying to know, what’s so special about that wooden sword? Does it really ward off evil? Does Doctor Wen even need something like that?]

[I agree with the comment above. With Doctor Wen around, what kind of evil spirit would dare to even show its face?!]

"Young lady, you’re kidding, right? This Peach Wood Sword has been consecrated by a grandmaster!"

"Boss, aren’t Peach Wood Swords a tool of Taoism? Yet your story involves Buddhism. You should’ve done your homework. Buddhist monks don’t use wooden swords. Besides... you just picked this up off the mountain, didn’t you? That place isn’t exactly ’clean.’"
