Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave
Chapter 190: Investigation (Part 2)
The dungeon’s entrance looked exactly as Rey remembered.
It was a dark passage leading into corrupted depths, ambient Chaos Energy that made normal practitioners uncomfortable.
Seris activated detection techniques, her armor glowing with holy light that pushed back the corruption.
"Standard corruption levels for border dungeon," she reported. "No immediate anomalies detected. We proceed with caution."
The team entered in tactical formation—Seris at point, Gareth and Lyssa flanking, Kaela and Jaren in middle positions, Rey and Finn bringing up the rear.
Rey carefully suppressed his true capabilities while maintaining the appearance of appropriate vigilance. The passages were familiar from his earlier operations, but he ensured his navigation appeared uncertain rather than knowledgeable.
"Entity ahead," Seris warned, raising her sword.
A corrupt creature emerged—Tier 8 classification, malformed humanoid dripping with dark energy. Dangerous for normal Searchers but manageable for a coordinated team with Paladin support.
"Standard engagement protocol," Seris commanded. "Ranged attacks first, I’ll close if necessary."
The Searchers launched techniques in coordinated sequence—Gareth’s earth spikes pinning the entity’s movement, Lyssa’s lightning strike disrupting its mystical cohesion, Finn’s fire assault targeting exposed vulnerabilities.
The entity roared and counterattacked, but Seris intercepted with her Tier 8 sword, the blade cutting through corrupted flesh with holy-enhanced efficiency.
Within thirty seconds, the threat was eliminated.
"Textbook execution," Seris observed. "Continue advancing."
They progressed deeper, encountering and dispatching several more entities without significant difficulty. Rey contributed appropriately—Mid-Sequence techniques executed competently, tactical awareness suggesting experience without revealing supernatural perception.
After four hours of exploration, they reached the chamber where Kaela and Jaren’s team had been cornered.
The area showed signs of recent combat—scorch marks from fire techniques, cracked stone from earth manipulation, and dried blood staining the floor.
Kaela’s expression tightened with painful memory. "This is where... where most of them died."
Seris conducted a thorough mystical analysis. "Residual energy signatures suggest multiple entity engagements. Corruption levels match expected patterns for coordinated assault."
She paused, her detection techniques focusing on a specific area.
"But there’s something unusual. Secondary mystical signature underlying the corruption. Very faint, almost undetectable."
Rey maintained a neutral expression while internally calculating. The Prince of Darkness had used Hollow Technique to control the entities that attacked Kaela’s team. Even with the technique’s concealment properties, traces might remain for sufficiently advanced detection.
"What kind of signature?" Gareth asked.
"Unclear," Seris replied. "Could be residual from a particularly powerful entity, or evidence of external manipulation. Insufficient data for definitive conclusion."
She marked the location for a detailed report, then gestured forward.
"We continue deeper. The anomalous entity behavior originated from unexplored sections, according to survivor testimony."
They advanced into passages Rey had deliberately avoided during his earlier operations—territories where stronger corruption existed, where his manipulations would be harder to trace.
The ambient Chaos Energy intensified noticeably as they descended.
"Corruption is increasing beyond normal parameters," Seris warned. "Maintain defensive formations."
Then Rey felt it—a mystical signature that made even his enhanced perception sharpen with interest.
Deep within the dungeon, something powerful was leaking Chaos Energy at scales that exceeded typical corrupt entity classifications.
"Stop," Seris commanded, raising her hand.
The team halted immediately.
"Major corruption source ahead. Classification uncertain but exceeding Tier 6 at a minimum. Possibly Tier 5 or higher."
Finn’s face paled. "Tier 5 entities require Paladin teams or Category S intervention. We’re not equipped for that level of threat."
"Agreed," Seris stated. "We’ve fulfilled investigation objectives—confirmed anomalous corruption source, documented entity behavior patterns, and recovered deceased Searchers’ effects. Further advance would exceed mission parameters and team capabilities."
She turned to face the group.
"We retreat immediately and report findings to Church and Guild authorities. Whatever exists in these depths requires specialized response beyond our current resources."
The team withdrew in organized retreat, their earlier confidence replaced by professional wariness born from detecting a genuine threat.
Rey maintained appropriate concern while internally satisfied with how events had unfolded.
The powerful entity Seris had detected was likely a residual presence from the Prince of Darkness’s earlier activities—not the Prince itself, which resided safely within Rey’s soul, but echoes of its power that would misdirect investigation toward natural corruption rather than deliberate manipulation.
Perfect misdirection.
’But, that isn’t everything... hehe!’
To witness more of the surprise hidden within, a more powerful group would have to return.

They emerged from the dungeon as sunset painted the sky in amber and crimson, the team visibly relieved to be back in the open air.
"I’ll report directly to the Cathedral," Seris stated. "Guild Master Theron should receive your findings through normal channels. The Church will coordinate with civil authorities on the response to the corruption source."
She turned to Rey directly for the first time since the mission began.
"Your conduct during the investigation was appropriate. No evidence of corruption influence or suspicious behavior detected."
Then she departed without further comment, her armored form disappearing toward the road leading to the regional Cathedral.
The remaining six Searchers made their way back toward Salimoor, exhaustion evident in their movements.
"Well," Gareth observed, "that was less exciting than I feared and more ominous than I hoped. Tier 5 corruption in a border dungeon is serious business."
"At least we didn’t have to fight it," Lyssa added. "Paladin Seris made the right call retreating."
Kaela walked beside Rey, her expression thoughtful.
"You handled yourself well in there. I know the Paladin was watching you specifically, but you never showed any sign of the corruption she was looking for."
"Because there’s nothing to find," Rey replied with gentle sincerity. "I’m just a Searcher trying to do my job and help where I can."
Jaren nodded in agreement. "The Guild Master should be satisfied with the investigation results. You performed professionally under scrutiny."
They continued toward the city, conversation shifting to speculation about what the Church’s response to the corruption source might entail.
Rey walked among them, his expression appropriately tired from the day’s exertions, his demeanor suggesting relief that the investigation had proceeded without complications.
But internally, his mind worked with cold precision. 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝘦𝓌𝑒𝑏𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝘭.𝒸𝘰𝑚
The investigation had succeeded perfectly—Paladin Seris found exactly what Rey wanted her to find. Evidence of a powerful corruption source that explained the anomalous entity’s behavior without connecting it to deliberate manipulation. His own conduct had been impeccable, removing suspicion while maintaining his cover identity.
And the Guild Master’s monitoring had revealed nothing compromising because there was nothing to reveal—Rey’s techniques for concealing his true nature exceeded Aether’s current detection capabilities.
As they approached Salimoor’s gates, Rey allowed himself a secret smile.
