Extra's Revenge: Reincarnated As A Slave
Chapter 191: Covert Manipulation (Part 1)
The debriefing with Guild Master Theron was brief and professional.
"Tier 5 corruption source confirmed," Gareth reported, presenting the mystical recordings they’d collected. "Located in unexplored depths, approximately three kilometers past previous expedition endpoints. Ambient Chaos Energy exceeded safe parameters for our team composition."
Theron studied the data with grave expression. "Paladin Seris’s assessment?"
"She recommended immediate Church intervention," Kaela added. "Said the corruption source requires specialized response beyond standard Guild capabilities."
The Guild Master nodded slowly.
"Understood. I’ll coordinate with Cathedral authorities on appropriate action. Your team performed admirably under difficult circumstances. Take two days of recovery leave, then report for new assignments."
He dismissed them with professional courtesy, though Rey noticed his attention lingering on the mystical recordings—specifically the traces of secondary signatures Seris had detected.
’He’s looking for evidence connecting me to the anomalies,’ Rey assessed. ’But he won’t find anything conclusive. Just enough ambiguity to maintain plausible deniability.’
Everything was perfect thus far.

That evening, Gareth suggested a celebration dinner at a popular tavern near the Guild headquarters.
"We survived an investigation mission into a potentially lethal dungeon," he declared. "That deserves proper food and drink!"
The team gathered at a corner table—six Searchers sharing the camaraderie that came from facing danger together and surviving.
Rey participated with carefully calibrated enthusiasm, his persona of grateful newcomer fitting naturally into the group dynamic.
"So, Eru," Lyssa began once they’d ordered their meals, "you mentioned working solo in border regions. How long have you been a Searcher?"
Rey had prepared this backstory meticulously, drawing from the dead man’s memories while modifying details to prevent verification.
"About four years," he replied with appropriate melancholy. "I started when I was sixteen after... after I lost my family."
The table quieted, recognizing the weight in his tone.
"Border region conflicts?" Finn asked gently.
Rey nodded, allowing controlled emotion to enter his expression. "Corrupt entity outbreak. Small village, limited defenses. My parents and younger sister didn’t survive the night."
It was complete fabrication, but delivered with sufficient sincerity to appear genuine.
"I barely escaped," Rey continued. "No other family, no connections, just a Nephilim teenager with natural Spirit Art talent and nowhere to go. So I became a Searcher—figured if I was going to face corruption anyway, I might as well get paid for it."
Kaela reached across the table, touching his hand with genuine sympathy.
"That’s... I’m so sorry, Eru. No one should have to face that alone, especially not so young."
"The Gods blessed me with survival and capabilities," Rey replied, his voice carrying religious acceptance. "I’ve tried to use those blessings to help others. Maybe prevent what happened to my family from happening to someone else."
It was perfectly crafted manipulation—tragic backstory that explained his isolation, religious framing that reinforced divine favor interpretation, emotional vulnerability that invited protective responses.
"You’re not alone anymore," Jaren stated firmly. "You’ve got us now. We’re your family—your Searcher family."
Gareth raised his mug. "To Eru—newest member of our dysfunctional but loyal team!"
The others echoed the toast, their expressions showing genuine acceptance and warmth.
Rey smiled with apparent gratitude while internally cataloguing their emotional responses for future exploitation.
"Thank you," he said softly. "That means more than you know."
The conversation shifted to lighter topics—Gareth’s terrible jokes, Lyssa’s complaints about equipment costs, Finn’s romantic misadventures that had everyone laughing.
Rey participated naturally, asking questions that encouraged others to share while deflecting attention from himself through practiced conversational redirection.
"What about combat preferences?" he asked Lyssa. "Do you favor lightning techniques—any particular reason?"
She launched into a detailed explanation of her training methodology, clearly passionate about the subject. Rey listened with apparent interest while his mind worked on completely different calculations.
’Lyssa values technical precision and academic understanding. Exploitable through appeals to intellectual curiosity. Gareth prioritizes team cohesion and physical capability—responds well to camaraderie and competitive challenges. Finn seeks approval and validation from more experienced Searchers—easily manipulated through mentorship dynamics.’
Each team member revealed exploitable characteristics through casual conversation, completely unaware they were providing intelligence for future operations.
By the evening’s end, Rey had successfully integrated himself as a valued team member while gathering extensive information about personalities, motivations, and vulnerabilities.
It was the perfect foundation for long-term manipulation. However, this was only secondary to his main objective.
It was playing out somewhere else...
While the Searchers enjoyed their celebration, Guild Master Theron met with Paladin Seris in a private chamber warded against surveillance.
"The Church’s assessment?" Theron asked without preamble.
"Tier 5 corruption confirmed," Seris replied, her armor removed to reveal a woman in her late thirties with stern features and calculating eyes. "The Cathedral wants it handled immediately before it strengthens or spreads to surrounding territories."
"Coordinated assault?"
"You and I, tonight," Seris stated. "Our combined capabilities should suffice for a Tier 5 entity, assuming it hasn’t evolved beyond initial classification. I have been authorized with an Artifact of corresponding power as well. If we encounter a Tier 4 threat, we retreat and request for Angels to take over from there."
Theron nodded agreement. "What about the Nephilim—Eru? Any evidence supporting suspicion of his involvement?"
Seris was silent for a moment, considering her response carefully.
"His conduct during the investigation was impeccable," she admitted. "No corruption influence detected, techniques operate purely through Spirit Art channels, tactical awareness suggests genuine experience rather than supernatural knowledge."
"But?" Theron pressed, hearing the hesitation.
"He attempted conversation with me multiple times," Seris explained. "Asking about corruption patterns, detection methodologies, tactical approaches. Could be innocent curiosity from someone wanting to learn. Could be reconnaissance to understand Church capabilities."
She paused before continuing.
"He does possess Chaos Art affinity—unavoidable given Nephilim heritage. But it’s completely undeveloped, barely registering on detection techniques. His Spirit Art talent is extraordinary, which supports divine blessing interpretation."
"Your professional assessment?"
"Insufficient evidence for a definitive conclusion," Seris stated. "He’s either exactly what he appears—a talented survivor with a tragic background seeking purpose through Searcher work—or he’s skilled enough at deception to fool Cathedral-trained detection techniques."
Theron considered this. "The investigation tonight should provide answers. If a corruption source shows signs of deliberate manipulation or external control, we’ll know someone engineered the anomalous behavior. If it’s a natural Tier 5 evolution, Eru’s timing was coincidental."
"Agreed," Seris replied. "Either way, we eliminate the threat and gain clarity on his involvement."
They prepared for departure, equipping themselves with artifacts and techniques appropriate for combating high-tier corruption.
This would be a long night!
