Chapter 402: Albedo
"Lord Harbinger, this person is...?"
After daybreak, Fatui officers gradually came to report to Bai Luo. Later, they still had to head to Durin’s heart to continue their research.
What they had not expected, however, was that there was now an extra person inside Bai Luo’s tent.
"Prepare a set of clothes for him. Also leave some people to keep an eye on him. Don’t let him run around, and... don’t try to provoke him."
After giving instructions to his subordinates, Bai Luo picked up the fur cloak nearby and draped it over himself.
The combination of fruit plus the stick was something even Yae Miko couldn’t withstand. Logically speaking, an ordinary person should have remained unconscious for much longer.
But Bai Luo didn’t know when he would return from this trip. Besides, this person was an artificial human. Even if he was a failed creation, his physique should still surpass that of normal humans.
"Yes, sir!"
Though full of questions, Vadim understood that matters concerning a Harbinger were best left unquestioned.
Only after receiving his subordinate’s response did Bai Luo finally leave the camp with peace of mind, disappearing into the endless snowy mountain.
The reason he hadn’t brought the boy along was because he had his own considerations.
Although the boy had not yet become so jealous of Albedo that he altered his appearance to match him exactly, both of them were creations of "Gold." If they met, there would inevitably be some sort of resonance between them.
Bai Luo had no idea what kind of reaction would occur if they encountered one another now.
Would the "defective product" attack the "finished product" out of jealousy?
Or would the "finished product," upon seeing the "defective product," instinctively try to eliminate him?
No matter which outcome it was, Bai Luo would suffer losses either way.
Most importantly, losing such a rare artificial human would mean losing a great deal of entertainment.
After taking out the map Vadim had prepared for him, Bai Luo unexpectedly discovered that Albedo’s camp was actually in the same direction as Durin’s remains.
As long as he didn’t climb onto Durin’s ribs and instead continued along the plank pathway to the left for some distance, he would eventually reach the camp.
No wonder Vadim and the others believed the sounds came from Albedo’s experiments. Without personally investigating the scene, it really was difficult to tell whether he was conducting experiments or not.
Walking the same road for a second time was much faster than before.
At the site of Durin’s remains, Fatui soldiers had already begun another round of excavation work.
Who knew what they would think after discovering the shattered rocks inside the cave?
Passing through the man-made walkway and by a crooked-necked tree, traces of human habitation gradually began appearing around him.
Further ahead stood an ancient ruin, and nestled beside it was an artificially excavated cave entrance.
Unlike the cave near Durin’s heart, this cavern had clearly been expanded using the ruins as a foundation.
The cave itself was not particularly large, but it was enough to store quite a number of items.
The moment he arrived at the entrance, he could already feel warmth radiating from inside.
Looking into the cave, he saw what was unmistakably a small alchemy laboratory.
Besides the alchemy table, experimental materials, and work desk, there were several wooden bookshelves as well.
Compared to the neatly arranged books and materials, the wooden crates stacked deeper inside the cave looked much more casually placed.
Judging from the vegetable leaves sticking out from them, they probably contained daily living supplies.
On the cabinet holding various potions sat a metallic cooking pot, beneath which a modest flame quietly burned.
Inside the pot bubbled some kind of pale green liquid.
There was no one inside the cave, but beside the campfire nearby, a delicious vegetable stew simmered slowly over low heat.
The people were likely somewhere close by.
Without touching anything inside, Bai Luo stepped back out of the cave and began observing the surrounding area.
BOOM—
Just as Bai Luo was trying to determine Albedo’s location from the footprints in the snow, a thunderous sound erupted not far away.
Even the snow on the mountain slopes was blasted loose in large amounts.
Well then, that certainly made things easier. No need to search for tracks anymore—he could simply head toward the source of the noise.
Following the sound for a short distance, Bai Luo finally saw the young man sketching on a platform, as well as the little red-clad girl crouching nearby, seemingly occupied with something.
The figure standing before the easel appeared refined and gentle, carrying the unmistakable air of a scholar.
Even in a place like Dragonspine, his hand remained exceptionally steady as he painted, completely unaffected by the harsh environment.
Both Klee and Albedo noticed Bai Luo approaching along the mountain path. But unlike Albedo, the moment Klee saw Bai Luo’s outfit, she immediately ran to Albedo’s side and peeked out from behind him with curious eyes fixed on Bai Luo.
Was Klee afraid of strangers?
Not at all.
As the daughter of adventurer parents, she was naturally filled with innocent love and curiosity toward everything around her. Logically, she shouldn’t have reacted this way.
The reason for her behavior was simply because Jean had specifically warned her that a certain person who wore a mask and was always smiling was actually a super bad guy!
That was why, even while hiding behind Albedo, she still looked at Bai Luo with curious eyes.
In her view, this smiling grown-up looked even friendlier than Brother Albedo. He didn’t seem like a bad person at all.
"Could you wait until I finish this painting?"
The moment Bai Luo stopped walking, Albedo understood that the visitor had come looking for him.
Even so, he did not stop painting. After comforting Klee, he continued working on his canvas.
"Of course. May I have the honor of admiring Mr. Albedo’s artwork?"
"A work exists to be appreciated. Feel free."
Was it confidence in his own strength? Or was he certain that Bai Luo would not harm him?
In any case, Albedo showed very little wariness toward Bai Luo and even allowed him to approach openly.
"This is... mint?"
Only after getting closer did Bai Luo realize that Albedo was not painting the snowy scenery he had imagined, but rather a sprig of snow-mountain mint swaying amidst the blizzard.
What was astonishing, however, was how meticulously the mint had been depicted. Even the smallest details were rendered with incredible precision.
Yet the surrounding grass and snowy landscape were treated extremely casually.
Some blades of grass were represented by nothing more than a few slanted lines.
"Remarkable, isn’t it?"
Perhaps noticing Bai Luo’s curiosity, Albedo began to explain.
"While other plants altered their characteristics in order to adapt to the environment, this particular plant stubbornly maintained its original nature. What is most precious is that it managed to adapt to such extreme conditions without abandoning its inherent qualities. Perhaps that, too, is part of evolution."
Unlike certain bards who forced flowery words into their poetry merely for the sake of sounding poetic, Bai Luo could tell that Albedo was sincerely explaining what made this mint special.
