Chapter 403: The One I Trust Is Alice
Across the continent of Teyvat, every nation has its own local specialties, and these usually grow only in specific regions.
For example, Mondstadt has Philanemo Mushrooms growing beneath its rooftops, Liyue has Silk Flowers, and Inazuma has Naku Weed.
But there are three things that can be found in every nation, things said to exist everywhere.
Mint, Sweet Flowers... and the Fatui.
Well... Bai Luo counts too.
"My apologies. I often lecture my students, so before I realized it, I ended up talking a bit too much."
Only after finishing the mint painting in his hands did Albedo realize something.
The person standing beside him was not one of his usual students, but a Harbinger of the Fatui.
In truth, after reading the letter Jean had sent him, his initial impression of Bai Luo had not been very good.
That was also one of the reasons he had instinctively kept Klee behind him.
But after meeting him in person, Bai Luo gave off a completely different feeling.
If he hadn’t already seen Bai Luo’s portrait and confirmed that he was indeed the Harbinger Jean had mentioned, Albedo might have assumed he was just another alchemist seeking guidance.
The fact that Bai Luo had not interrupted him while he painted and explained things had already earned considerable respect in Albedo’s eyes.
"Mr. Albedo explained things very well. I’ve benefited greatly from it."
Albedo’s perspectives on life and evolution differed both from what Bai Luo had once studied and from the Doctor’s theories.
Although much of it still sounded confusing and difficult to fully grasp, listening to him had undeniably provided Bai Luo with useful knowledge.
A genuine passion for knowledge—that was one of the reasons the Doctor valued him so highly.
After all, among today’s so-called "scholars," the motivation for pursuing knowledge was no longer so pure.
Especially those old men in the Akademiya. They constantly accused others of being stubborn and close-minded, yet the truly rigid and inflexible ones were themselves.
"May I ask how I should address you?"
In order to confirm he had not mistaken him for someone else, Albedo finally asked aloud.
"Bai Luo. As you can see, I am a Harbinger of the Fatui."
Unless he was acting under another identity, Bai Luo generally had no interest in hiding who he was.
There was simply no need.
The moment he became a Harbinger, every major organization of significance had already obtained information about him.
"Then, Mr. Bai, what brings you here to see me?"
Adding a few finishing touches to the lines on his painting, Albedo casually asked.
Though his depiction of the surrounding grass was simplistic, it was actually influenced by certain works of art.
He had only ever seen a forgery of the piece titled Reed Sketches, but he greatly admired its artistic merit.
The weeds in this painting, Snow Mountain Mint, had partly drawn inspiration from Reed Sketches.
"The main reason I came this time is actually because of her."
Bai Luo glanced toward Klee as he spoke.
His words immediately caused Albedo’s gaze to sharpen.
There were not many people or things that Albedo cherished deeply enough to protect with all his heart, but Klee was absolutely someone he would risk his life to defend.
He would never allow anyone to harm the little girl by any means whatsoever.
Although Jean’s letter had warned him to be cautious of Bai Luo, it had not specified what Bai Luo intended to do. Had he known in advance that the target involved Klee, he certainly would not have been so bold as to discuss academic matters so casually.
"There’s no need to worry. I’m not targeting her. I’m only delivering a message on someone else’s behalf."
Noticing the change in Albedo’s expression, Bai Luo immediately explained.
"In fact, I have a close friend in Inazuma, and she just so happens to know Ms. Alice as well. After learning that I was in Mondstadt, Ms. Alice sent me a letter asking me to pass a message on to her daughter."
Bai Luo’s explanation caused Albedo to relax slightly, because based on his understanding of Alice, this really did sound like something she would do.
Still, he remained suspicious.
After all, anyone who put in even a little effort could discover the relationship between Klee and Alice.
He didn’t believe the Fatui would be ignorant of such information.
"Wow! Mommy sent me a message? What did Mommy say?!"
Klee, however, was completely different. Having already held very little wariness toward Bai Luo to begin with, the moment she heard her mother’s name, her eyes lit up instantly.
Although Albedo’s restraint kept her from successfully running over to Bai Luo’s side, she still tilted her head upward and looked at him with eyes full of anticipation.
"She said... ’Mommy has prepared a huge surprise for her little sun this summer.’"
"Wow! A surprise! Brother Albedo! Mommy prepared a surprise for Klee!"
The little sun’s excitement was practically impossible to contain.
The final trace of caution in Albedo’s eyes quietly disappeared as well.
As the greatest adventurer on the entire continent, Alice left most people with an impression of mystery and elegance.
Only those truly familiar with her knew her real personality.
And a line like that was completely in Alice’s style.
"So it seems Mr. Albedo finally trusts me now?"
Noticing the change in Albedo’s demeanor, Bai Luo spoke teasingly.
"No. The one I trust is not you, but Alice."
Just as he said, respect was one thing, but he had never truly trusted the Fatui.
Still, with Alice’s involvement, even if Bai Luo was a Harbinger, his attitude naturally softened considerably.
How should he put it...
Even when thinking of family, the first person who came to mind was still his master.
But among the people closest to him now, aside from his master, Klee and Aunt Alice were probably the most important.
Even though he often felt both helpless and amused by Alice constantly trying to make him call her "Mom," he had long since regarded Klee as his own little sister.
"Speaking of which, Mr. Albedo, you’re also a teacher, aren’t you?"
Seeing that the atmosphere between them had eased considerably, Bai Luo casually began steering the conversation elsewhere.
"Yes. As the Chief Alchemist of the Knights of Favonius, I’ve always answered those who seek knowledge from me. That is also one of the reasons people refer to me as a teacher."
In truth, before Albedo arrived in Mondstadt, alchemy had practically been a lost art there.
Without him, the Mondstadters’ understanding of alchemy would have remained limited to insignificant little tricks unworthy of serious recognition.
"What if I wanted to learn as well? I wonder whether I have any talent for it."
That deceptive smile appeared on Bai Luo’s face once again as he asked the question.
Originally, aside from looking for Klee, one of his reasons for climbing the mountain had been to discuss matters related to Visions with Albedo.
But the boy now lying in his tent had changed his plans.
Though he had promised many people that he absolutely would not stir up trouble in Mondstadt—for Bai Luo, causing trouble wasn’t an active skill.
It was a passive ability.
As long as he wasn’t the one actively trying to cause trouble, then none of it could possibly be his fault.
"To study alchemy, the most important thing is not talent, but whether you possess sufficient patience and a steadfast will. After all, when preparing materials, even the slightest discrepancy is unacceptable."
Albedo did not directly comment on Bai Luo’s aptitude, but judging from his tone, he was still willing to guide him.
