Gourmet: From a Stall in Northern Europe
Chapter 500 - 412: Pizza or Buffet, That Is the Question
Su, who was memorizing the flavors and prices on the blackboard, didn’t notice the slight smile on Helena’s lips as she walked ahead. She just kept her head down, following her toward the restaurant’s entrance.
It was exactly ten-thirty, and many hungry customers were already queuing outside.
When they saw the two women come out, their eyes lit up like they’d seen their saviors.
"Is lunch open? Is lunch open?"
"Hurry up, what’s delicious for lunch? I can’t wait to eat!"
Helena glanced back at her, and Su nodded, taking a deep breath, stepping forward, and raising the blackboard in her hands.
"Good afternoon everyone. Today’s special lunch menu, curated by Chef Lin’s team, includes Creamy Pineapple Roast Chicken Pizza, Creamy Cheese Durian Pizza, Sausage Rolled Beef Sauce Pizza, and Salted Egg Mushroom Roast Chicken Pizza."
She briefly introduced all four types of pizzas to the customers, including the ingredients and prices, then hung the blackboard on the wall for the customers to read.
After each pizza name on the blackboard, there’s a complete list of ingredients, so customers can identify any allergens themselves.
While Su was introducing the pizza flavors to the customers, Helena discreetly picked up the front desk phone and began calling the breakfast reservation customers listed in the registry.
Su, fully focused on her work, wasn’t aware of when Helena mentioned that familiar name not far behind her.
As the blackboard was hung up, Helena was almost done on her side.
Soon, the customers who had been lingering around gathered from all directions.
"Hey, hey, what’s going on? Why are you cutting in line?!"
"What line-cutting? I have a number card!"
The customer at the front of the queue watched as a man swaggered over from the side and hurriedly called out to him, frowning slightly.
"Number card?"
"It’s like this," Su quickly explained to everyone, "a few customers waited over an hour this morning, and just as it was their turn, breakfast sold out. To compensate for their wasted time, starting this week we have begun a system of advance registration."
"Registered customers will have priority to purchase when lunch opens; however, the number of registered customers won’t be too many, roughly seven to ten people. We will also manage the queue size to avoid unnecessary waits."
After hearing her explanation, the faces of the customers near the front of the queue looked a bit better.
If it’s only a few people, then it’s acceptable.
After all, no one can ensure they won’t be the next unlucky ones.
With this safety net in place, maybe next time they’ll be the ones benefiting.
Even if a few customers are dissatisfied, they can’t say much as this is the restaurant’s turf; it’s up to them to set the rules.
The registered customers lined up in a separate, shorter queue next to the original one and began placing their orders with Su.
Helena had completed her task and temporarily stayed, standing quietly behind the front desk to oversee the place, keeping an eye on things to prevent any sudden incidents that a less experienced Su might not handle well.
"Sir, which pizza flavor would you like?"
"One of each flavor? Okay, but reheating them will affect the taste greatly. I suggest finishing them on-site."
"Sir, you... two double combos? Okay."
Su held a registration card in her hand, recording the customers’ requests in sequence.
As she slowly moved backward while jotting down orders, Sergy was openly staring at his girlfriend, watching her work with full concentration.
To be honest, it was his first time observing Su at work up close, and she seemed completely different from her usual self at home.
In uniform, she appeared much more energetic, exuding a strong feminine charm; her every move radiated alluring elegance.
"Good afternoon, sir. May I ask you..."
After recording the previous customer’s order and handing over the receipt, Su instinctively shifted her gaze to the next customer.
Meeting that familiar face, she froze instantly.
"Hehe."
Sergy grinned, "Surprise!"
"Why are you..."
Su glanced around somewhat awkwardly and noticed the nearby customers staring with a deep sense of curiosity.
Her previously calm face blushed, somewhat embarrassedly taking the bill in her hand.
"What would you like to order? Never mind, I’ll order for you. Two double combos, that’ll be forty euros in total. With the employee discount at half price, just give me twenty."
"Half price discount too? You guys have great benefits!"
Sergy’s eyes lit up, reached into his pockets, but froze momentarily.
"Didn’t bring your card?"
Su wasn’t surprised, rolled her eyes, wrote his order number on the paper, and moved straight to the next customer.
"Return it to me at home."
"Hehe~"
Hearing the word "home," the surrounding tourists looked at the two with ambiguous expressions, as if they suddenly realized something.
"Impressive, bro, where did you find such a hot girlfriend?"
"Tell me the place, I’ll try my luck there sometime."
"What a pity, I was hoping to get her contact information."
"Helena... oh, Helena is married, but being married doesn’t matter much, maybe she’ll get divorced someday, who knows."
"???"
Helena, standing behind the reception desk, shook her head helplessly. Situations like this happened almost every day, and she had long grown accustomed to it.
Though a bit annoyed, she actually felt rather pleased inside, as it showed her charm was still effective.
If there came a day when no one flirted with her, then there would be a serious problem.
"Hey, those two foreign girls are pretty, huh!"
"Where, where? Let me see."
"They really are, with looks and figures like that, people might believe they are film stars, right?"
"I feel like they are about the same level as the models in the airport posters— is this the standard of a high-end restaurant?"
"When I watch videos online, those foreign restaurant waitstaff always dress in..."
As he spoke, the person cupped his hands in front of his chest, making a semi-circular shape.
"That’s the uniform for bar girls watching sports, working the night shifts. It’s about creating a lively atmosphere for games, so they hire staff with spicy figures on purpose."
The tour guide in front quickly explained through a small loudspeaker, fearing the tourists might develop unnecessary misunderstandings.
Tourists who haven’t traveled abroad much are often like this, with their understanding of foreign countries limited to short online videos. Similarly, Western tourists have misunderstandings about Great Xia for the same reasons.
It’s just that Great Xia’s media is relatively more impartial than Western media, not focusing solely on the dark sides, generally promoting positive energy.
Places like bars are undoubtedly filmed and uploaded by people traveling or studying abroad, then seen by others.
"So, what’s actually on offer for lunch here? Didn’t you say it’s a buffet? Why does it sound like we have to order and pay for it?"
"Is there a selection of grades? Domestic buffets also have several levels, right?"
"Are those Japanese dishes?" 𝒇𝙧𝙚𝓮𝔀𝓮𝒃𝙣𝓸𝒗𝒆𝒍.𝙘𝒐𝒎
As the tourists discussed energetically, the guide went to the front to look at the menu on the blackboard, froze for a moment, then spoke with Helena at the reception desk in French, and slowly returned with a puzzled expression.
"Um, I’ve got some good news and some bad news for everyone."
"Let’s hear the bad news first, is it that there’s no dining spot left and some of us can’t eat?"
"No, no, everyone can eat, the meal service hasn’t started yet."
The tour guide shook his head, "The bad news is, there are two head chefs here. One is a Western cuisine head chef, offering the usual buffet, and today’s theme is barbecue."
As soon as the words were out, the tourists began to shout immediately.
"Barbecue?!"
"Barbecue is great, the barbecue at a high-end hotel restaurant must taste terrific."
"Foreign barbecue seems to always be made from large chunks of meat or steak, unlike the tech meat and zombie meat from domestic barbecue shops. I’ll have this."
"Why the rush, the guide hasn’t even given the good news yet. Besides, how is serving barbecue at a buffet bad news?"
"Indeed," the guide spread his hands helplessly, "I haven’t finished; this restaurant’s business is so good purely because of the other head chef. Although this one doing the buffet is excellent, his reputation isn’t as big as the other."
"But the other one, um, is a Chinese head chef who makes relatively authentic Chinese cuisine. Somehow, this became popular and attracted a lot of foreign tourists to try it."
"And the Chinese head chef usually sells from a stall, not participating in the buffet making; look, that cart beside is his."
"So, the food made by the Chinese head chef has to be purchased separately, which conflicts with the buffet."
"If you buy the food here, you might not be able to finish the buffet."
"That Chinese head chef prepares different food each day, oh no, each meal, purely based on mood. Today, he’s selling pizza: cheese durian milk-flavored pineapple crust pizza, Orléans chicken pineapple crust pizza, sausage crust bolognese pizza, and salted egg yolk crust spicy chicken mushroom pizza."
"Pizza??"
The Great Xia tourists look at each other, and the situation suddenly turns a little awkward.
Never thought they would come abroad, and at the first stop, a high-end seaside hotel—the first meal is actually pizza with domestic flavors.
If they eat it, it feels like coming abroad was pointless.
If they don’t, the buffet sounds like it might not be great; what if they step on a mine?
More importantly, they paid for the tour group, with designated dining places and costs. Unless they are willing to pay extra to eat elsewhere, they have to dine with the group here.
For this situation, the guide felt a little embarrassed too.
To be fair, this outcome is partly due to him not doing proper research in advance.
Who knew that the best restaurant of the most renowned five-star hotel locally would sell the best Great Xia cuisine?
