Chapter 324: A Vow

Zephan;

For the past five minutes, I have been searching for Elian.

He wasn’t in the room, at the nursery, nor with Zethar or Aunt Selthia.

I would follow his scent, but it’s all over the place.

I’m trying not to worry when I hear laughter that I can never mistake.

"You sound like you were a menace growing up!! How could you do that to them!" Elian’s voice follows with more laughter, and I take a deep breath.

I already have an idea of what I would find, but somehow, I’m hoping I’m wrong. 𝗳𝚛𝚎𝚎𝘄𝕖𝕓𝕟𝕠𝚟𝚎𝕝.𝗰𝕠𝐦

I follow the sound of the laughter, and my heart sinks partway when I see them.

Elian and... Asa.

They’re seated near one of the numerous gardens, right in front of the old fountains.

Elián is perched on a small mat, legs drawn in, and hands gesticulating freely as he speaks with so much excitement in his eyes. Asa is sitting in front of him, listening and nodding with attentive eyes, and my fingers curl into fists.

She is too close.

She is not touching him, and neither is she being inappropriate, but... She is just close enough to feel intentional.

To present.

I stay where I am, half-hidden behind a pillar, and watch them in silence.

Asa tilts her head as Elián talks, eyes focused entirely on him. She’s listening in that way people do when they want you to feel seen... When they want you to keep talking. When they want your trust without asking for it outright.

Elián gestures toward the gardens, then toward the basket of apples between them. I can no longer focus on what is being said, but Asa nods thoughtfully, with her lips curving into a small smile.

They’re so relaxed around each other like they’ve been friends for ages, and the intimacy of it unsettles me more than anything has in a long time.

My stomach tightens. And I feel a bitter taste bleed into my mouth.

Since when did Elian suddenly grow fond of Asa??

I lean back against the stone, arms folding across my chest as I replay the last few days in my mind.

Elián had never liked Asa.

Not truly.

He’d been polite... but distant... and wary in that soft way he always gets when he senses something wrong. He never sought her out or lingered in her presence longer than necessary.

And Asa?

From the moment she arrived, both Zethar and I felt it.

Something was off... Familiar in the wrong way.

Somehow, every time I’m around the girl, I still feel it, so... what can’t Elian? What changed??

I look back at them in confusion. Is Elian playing a game??

Asa laughs at something Elián says, covering her mouth briefly, with her eyes brighter than I’ve ever seen them. Elián’s smile widens, and for a moment, he looks... lighter.

That’s what twists the knife. Elian isn’t playing games.

He... he actually has let down his guard for her.

Whatever Asa is doing... It’s working!!

This... this can’t be good. Something fishy is going on!!

I turn away before I’m tempted to interrupt.

What do I do??

There’s only one person I’m sure would understand my worries and fears.

I mean... he felt it the first day she came. He should know this isn’t normal... or right. I need to talk to him.

*******

When I enter Zethar’s room, I find him in bed, propped against the headboard with a blanket drawn up to his waist.

His skin is still pale, eyes sharp despite the exhaustion on his face. At this point, I’m glad he wasn’t born an Omega, cause every pregnancy would be torture to him.

He ought to be mirroring Elian’s discomfort, yet somehow, Elian alway slooks bright, and Zethar looks like... hell is at war inside him.

Almost like something takes all of Elian’s discomfort and dumps it on Zethar.

He looks up at me flatly, and I smile at him.

"Morning, brother." I greet, and he sighs.

"Morning." He replies flatly, and I move to the chair beside his bed. I sit down in silence, and he just watches me as neither of us says a word.

Then I decide to break the silence.

"Elián is with Asa," I speak, and he freezes. His jaw tightens, and his fingers curl into the blanket.

"Where?" He asks like he has the strength to get out of bed, and I stare at him.

"The gardens. They were talking. They’ve been chatting like childhood friends." I reply, and Zethar’s brows crease.

"How long?" He asks, and I shrug.

"I don’t know. Long enough. I was searching for him all morning, only to find him with her." I reply, and he scoffs quietly, with his gaze shifting to the wall.

"I told you." He grumbles with annoyance in his voice, and I frown.

"You told me what?"

"That she’d try something." His replies in irritation; he doesn’t even try to hide.

"She’s up to something. She has always been." He replies, and I let out a breath.

"Zethar, she didn’t do anything overt. They were just talking." I say in an attempt to salvage the escalation I can already feel coming, but it doesn’t work.

"That’s worse," He snaps, then winces slightly, as he takes a hand to his head.

He breathes through the pain, then continues gently.

"Elián is like a child. He trusts too easily. If Asa’s gotten close enough for him to suddenly be comfortable around her, then I’m worried about the kind of damage she’s capable of." He says, and I lean forward.

"I don’t know if we should take any actions. He seems... happy," I say quietly, and Zethar looks at me the way he always does when he wants his eyes to speak instead of his lips.

"And that’s exactly why this matters. That’s exactly why we need to take action." He replies, and I run a hand through my hair, with frustration coiling in my chest.

"I don’t understand the sudden shift. Elián avoids people he doesn’t feel safe with. He’s not foolish." I reply, and Zethar nods.

"No, he’s not foolish. But he’s worse." He replies, and I raise an eyebrow.

"He’s kind," Zethar continues, and I stay quiet.

"He’s naive. And desperate to believe people are good when they offer him gentleness. That makes him easy to manipulate." He concludes, and I stare at my brother.

"That’s harsh," I note, and he scoffs.

"It’s true. You know it. We’re not just watching over a pregnant omega; it’s more like our baby has a baby." He retorts, and silence stretches between us.

Finally, I let out a breath before asking the question that would let me know if we’re both on the same page.

"What is it about her that bothers you so much?"

Zetha doesn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stares at the ceiling with a distant expression.

"She feels wrong," he finally speaks.

"She just feels like an illusion that might vanish to reveal something ugly soon. I can’t help but get this sense of deception and pretence from her. If she were truly good. Why would she hide? What would she have to hide??" He replies, and I fall silent.

He feels the same thing I do. The same thought. The same fear.

The fact that we both feel I. Makes it real...

"So what do we do? Do we confront her? Do we tell Aunt Selthia?" I question, and he turns to glare at me.

"First off, you may have accepted Aunt Selthia as some kind of mother, but the relationship between her an dme hasn’t changed. She’s my distant aunt and has no business being involved in how I look after my Omega." He snaps, and I blink at him in shock.

"Secondly, we can not confront Asa without proof." He adds, and I struggle to find my voice.

"Then... Then what do we do?"

"We set her up before she gets the chance to pull something." He replies, and my brows crease.

"You think she’s targeting Elián?" I question, and he sighs.

"I think Elián is vulnerable, and she knows it." He corrects, and I swallow.

I shut my eyes as I remember Elián’s laughter... The way his shoulders had relaxed. Why would anyone want to hurt him?

"We’ll come up with a plan," Zethar says, and I nod as I stand.

I place a hand briefly on his shoulder.

"If she tries anything—"

"We act. Without hesitation." He finishes, and I nod.

As I leave his room, the unease doesn’t fade.

If anything, it sharpens.

When will Elian be able to know full peace?

It’s almost like everywhere he goes, trouble follows. Back home, it was Balinar. At Howleroot, Alpha Liandria troubled him. At Gravemaw, witches and warlocks came after his happiness, and now... here, wher i wnt him to have all the peace and safety in the world... Asa apperaed.

Out of nowhere. Elian may trust her. Elian may be happy, but if I find out the slightest thing wrong with her, I will put an end to her.

That’s not a promise.

It’s a vow.
