Chapter 2328: Story 2329: Beneath the Frozen Earth

The tendril descended from the heavens like the finger of a god.

Miles wide.

Covered in glowing silver eyes.

The forest beneath it bent violently as storms spiraled around the colossal appendage lowering through the clouds toward Maya. Trees ripped from the earth while silver lightning crawled across the sky in endless waves.

Every silver creature in the forest remained kneeling.

Waiting.

Worshipping.

Maya couldn’t move.

The Harvester’s attention pressed against her mind with unbearable weight. Visions flooded her thoughts faster now—alien skies, dead worlds, oceans of silver biomass swallowing entire civilizations beneath endless stars.

It wanted her alive.

Not as prey.

As connection.

“The bridge...” Ethan whispered weakly beside her.

The Shepherd roared again, tearing another silver hunter apart as black fungal blood sprayed across the glowing forest floor.

“RUN!”

Selena grabbed Maya violently and pulled her backward through the trees.

That finally broke the paralysis.

The three of them sprinted deeper into the forest while the heavens screamed above them. Behind them, the descending tendril slammed into the earth where Maya had stood seconds earlier.

The impact shattered the forest.

A shockwave hurled trees sideways like splinters. Silver fungal growth exploded outward from the crater in every direction, consuming ground, stone, and dead wood instantly.

Terraforming accelerated.

The Harvester had touched Earth directly.

Maya looked back once.

And wished she hadn’t.

The massive tendril pulsed like a living artery connected to the colossal organism still hanging above the clouds. Thousands of eyes opened across its surface, all searching the forest simultaneously.

Searching for her.

The Shepherd charged into the expanding silver growth without hesitation, disappearing beneath collapsing trees and screaming hunters.

Then came silence.

Selena pulled Maya forward harder.

“Don’t stop moving!”

They ran for what felt like hours through freezing rain and silver-lit darkness. Eventually the forest began thinning as the land rose into steep frozen hills beneath the storm.

Snow appeared across the ground.

The air became painfully cold.

Northern mountains loomed ahead through the darkness like jagged teeth.

Site Zero.

Ethan collapsed to one knee suddenly.

Black and silver veins twisted violently beneath his skin now, moving like living worms under flesh. Blood poured from his nose as he stared toward the mountains.

“It’s there,” he gasped.

Maya knelt beside him.

“What is?”

“The first signal.”

Thunder rolled overhead.

Then the mountain itself answered.

A deep vibration echoed beneath the frozen earth ahead of them.

Not from the sky.

From below.

Selena went pale instantly.

“No...”

The snow-covered ground before them cracked open slowly.

Ancient metal emerged beneath layers of ice.

A massive blast door buried into the mountainside.

Half-covered by decades of snow and black fungal decay.

Floodlights flickered weakly to life around the structure one by one.

SITE ZERO.

The original BLACKTHORN excavation facility.

Maya stared at the enormous frozen entrance in disbelief.

“How is it still active?”

Before Selena could answer, static burst from hidden speakers buried around the mountain.

Then a calm voice echoed through the storm.

“Genetic signature confirmed.”

Maya froze.

The voice continued.

“Welcome home, Maya Kane.”

Heavy machinery groaned beneath the ice.

The blast doors began opening slowly inward.

Warm air drifted outward from the darkness beyond carrying the familiar smell of wet earth and decay.

But there was something else beneath it now.

Something metallic.

Ancient.

Alive.

Ethan stared into the opening with horror filling his fading eyes.

“It never stopped growing,” he whispered.

Far above them, the storm rotated faster as the Harvester descended lower across the heavens.

And deep beneath Site Zero—

Something moved beneath the ice.
