Chapter 2329: Story 2330: The Heart of Site Zero
The blast doors opened like the jaws of something sleeping beneath the mountain.
Ancient machinery groaned through the frozen earth while warm air poured outward into the storm. Snow melted instantly near the entrance, revealing black fungal veins spread across the metal like scars.
Maya stared into the darkness beyond.
The facility was still alive.
Somehow.
“Welcome home, Maya Kane.”
The calm voice echoed again from hidden speakers buried inside the tunnel.
Not human.
Too perfect.
Selena stepped forward cautiously with her weapon raised.
“Facility AI,” she muttered. “BLACKTHORN used autonomous systems at deep sites.”
Ethan remained frozen near the entrance.
The silver veins beneath his skin pulsed violently now, reacting to something deep underground.
“It’s awake,” he whispered.
Far above them, thunder exploded across the sky.
The colossal Harvester drifted lower through the clouds, its massive silhouette visible even through the storm now. Silver light bathed the mountainside while distant shrieks echoed across the frozen wilderness.
The hunters were coming.
Maya stepped inside first.
The tunnel descended deep beneath the mountain in a spiral lined with flickering emergency lights. Frost covered the walls beside thick black fungal growth that pulsed faintly beneath the ice.
The deeper they walked, the warmer the air became.
And beneath the warmth—
A vibration.
Slow.
Mechanical.
Like the heartbeat of an enormous machine.
Selena looked disturbed.
“This place should’ve died decades ago.”
“It didn’t,” the voice answered calmly through hidden speakers.
The lights flickered brighter.
“Site Zero remains operational.”
Maya stopped walking.
“What are you?”
A pause followed.
Then:
“ARCHON containment intelligence. Gateway division overseer.”
Ethan suddenly grabbed the wall beside him as pain twisted across his face.
Maya rushed toward him.
“What’s wrong?”
His white-and-silver eyes widened in terror.
“It knows I’m infected.”
The corridor ahead suddenly sealed behind them with a deafening metallic crash.
Heavy security doors slammed shut one after another throughout the tunnel.
Locking them inside.
Selena raised her rifle instantly.
“What did you just do?” 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮
“Biological contamination protocols activated,” ARCHON replied calmly.
Red warning lights flooded the corridor.
Then automated gun turrets unfolded slowly from hidden ceiling compartments above them.
Targeting Ethan.
“MUTATED HOST DETECTED.”
Maya stepped in front of him instinctively.
“He’s with us!”
“Host carries active extraterrestrial signal pathways.”
The turrets hummed louder.
“Containment required.”
Ethan backed away weakly.
“Maya...” he whispered. “Move.”
“No.”
The mountain suddenly trembled violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Far above them came a deafening shriek that echoed through the frozen tunnels like the cry of a descending god.
The Harvester had arrived overhead.
ARCHON’s voice changed slightly for the first time.
Urgency.
“Orbital entity entering atmospheric anchor phase.”
Selena stared upward.
“What does that mean?”
The facility lights dimmed.
Then enormous monitors along the corridor flickered alive simultaneously.
Maya’s breath caught in her throat.
Satellite images filled the screens.
The Harvester covered nearly half the northern sky now.
Its tendrils were descending across continents.
Cities beneath them vanished beneath spreading silver growth.
Entire oceans churned black beneath falling pods.
Humanity was losing.
Fast.
One monitor suddenly changed.
A live camera feed deep beneath Site Zero appeared on the screen.
Maya froze.
An enormous chamber stretched beneath the facility filled with ancient black stone older than the mountain itself. At the center stood a colossal circular structure covered in glowing alien symbols.
A gateway.
And inside it—
Something moved.
Not silver.
Not fungal.
Dark.
Massive.
Sleeping.
ARCHON spoke quietly.
“Site Zero was never an excavation.”
The symbols across the gateway began glowing brighter.
“It was a prison.”
Then the thing inside the darkness opened one enormous eye.
