Chapter 54: Chapter 54 Choice

It looked like the enemies had gained a lot of terrain in the last few days, Raiden realized that because he could hear the sound of the battle, but he couldn’t feel the smell of the ocean... that was a bad sign.

"Here we go again..." Raiden thought.

After crossing a few hills, the wagon stopped moving and then the group was able to see the battlefield ahead. At noon, the battlefield was a searing paint of chaos and blood. The sun blazed high above, casting harsh, unrelenting light over the area, illuminating the full scale of the unfolding disaster.

The enemies’ massive army pressed forward relentlessly, their sheer numbers creating a wall of steel and menace that threatened to overwhelm the defenders. The ground was churned into a grim mixture of mud and blood, with each advancing wave of soldiers leaving a deeper imprint of devastation. Their formations were tight and disciplined, a clear sign of their determination and strategic prowess.

Behind this imposing force, several cannons roared with continuous fury. The relentless barrage of cannon fire rained down upon the defenders, sending plumes of smoke and debris into the air.

Each shot landed with a thunderous impact, tearing through the ranks of the exhausted defenders and creating chaotic breaches in their lines. The defenders’ defenses, once sturdy and resolute, were now breaking apart.

"What the..." Raiden furrowed his eyebrows when he saw that among the beastkin, he saw a lot of humans.

Those were the enemies from the country that came from the East of the Lunaria kingdom... they were wearing long red spears and red armor as well. They all were pretty tall and robust as well. From a distance, Raiden could see in their expressions that they were pretty battle-hardened as well.

Raiden felt a bit troubled seeing humans on the attacking side, which showed that the conflicts were a lot more diversified than he had expected... it wasn’t a matter of a race agaisnt another race. Things were a lot more complicated than that.

"Move to the back of our allies’ formation," Lenore ordered the driver. "They need our assistance immediately. "The enemies have more numbers, so we will have to hold our ground for as long as possible to turn the tides of the battle."

From what Raiden could see, the enemies outnumbered them two to one, but even with the quality of the warriors from the village and some squads of elf archers raining down and killing enemies with their arrows, things still looked pretty dangerous.

The wagons moved to the back of the formation, and they could feel the ground trembling with each cannonball that hit the ground, which happened quite often. it seemed that the enemies wanted to end the battle with a staggering victory.

As soon as the wagons stopped moving, everyone jumped from it and then began to carry the potions to the wounded... there were a lot of them covered in bandages, Raiden raised his eyebrows when he saw some of the students as well, that wasn’t a good thing. He also found Javier and Ruth among the wounded. At that point in time, he couldn’t help but think that he should try to learn some techniques for the path of healing.

"Drink this. It will make you feel better," Raiden said. "What happened to you guys?"

"Those guys in red armor attacked us before sunrise... they didn’t seem particularly strong, but since their numbers were high, we were called to fight," Javier explained. "They aren’t skilled, and they didn’t have a powerful aura, but their formations and willpower are insane."

The red spearmen were a chilling sight on the battlefield, embodying a grim form of martial efficiency. They moved as a single, relentless tide, their red armor and spears striking in their stark, almost unnatural uniformity. Each man was a faceless, interchangeable part of a vast, impersonal machine of war.

Upon closer inspection, it was evident that these soldiers had been stripped of their individual identities. Their eyes, devoid of any emotion, seemed almost lifeless, marked by the relentless conditioning that had made them into mere instruments of combat. There was a haunting emptiness in their gaze as if their very essence had been siphoned away, leaving behind only the mechanical will to fight.

Their training had honed them to be the ultimate soldiers in expandability. Each red spearman was trained to endure unimaginable pain and suffering without a flicker of hesitation. Their bodies, often pierced by spears or riddled with arrows, continued to press forward with a relentless drive. Despite grievous wounds, they fought on with an unwavering determination, their movements almost mechanical, driven by a cold, unwavering sense of duty. Their only desire was to keep fighting until their bodies failed to obey them...

"The commander pulled us out when the other enemies and the cannons approached, but things have only gotten worse since then..." Ruth added.

Although they had been trained to be warriors for over a year, Raiden assumed that his friends probably would have had a hard time attacking to kill, perhaps the other students who had been trained for longer wouldn’t be as affected. Still, the difference that they could make on a battlefield shouldn’t be that high. So, the issue was definitely higher.

In any case, after helping his friends, Raiden approached to help his sister... he could see that slowly, she was getting tired of using her healing skills, not because she was bored, but because she was truly exhausted. Things only got worse when someone in the worst condition appeared, expecting to be treated, but she didn’t have that much energy left.

"We can’t retreat any longer, any more than this, and the cannonballs will reach our camps," Lenore declared. "Our best option is to fight harder and cause a huge melee. That way, we will nullify their cannons."

Harth nodded, but he didn’t say anything since, in a chaotic battle like that, the red spearmen would have the advantage thanks to their union and formations. At the same time, they couldn’t order the elves and dwarves forced to do the same as them... they had their own commanders.

While he was tending the wounded, Raiden looked at the other camps and then saw the dwarves using a bunch of siege weapons to attack the enemies. Catapults and giant crossbows that could reload pretty fast were their chosen weapons. Still, the beastkin in the frontlines could block those projectiles most of the time and avoid the damage from spreading among their ranks.

Raiden had the idea of leveling up those weapons with his fortune, and that definitely would change the tide of the battle, but he couldn’t do that without standing out in a weird way... he improved himself a few times in the previous battle, but perhaps it was time to improve his weapon... that would make him stand out as well, but at least that would give his group more influence over the battlefield.
