I Need Money to Level Up
Chapter 58 Tactics
It was impossible to mistake the sound of cannonballs for anything else... Moreover, soon, the shouts and cries began to echo around. Raiden got up from his tent after barely having time to rest, but at least the tension didn’t let him feel that tired.
"They really are trying hard to get on our nerves..." Iri said when she left her tent with her bed hair, she was trying to fix it, but she was having a hard time doing so.
"We are lucky that they are actually targeting the other camps... but the red spearmen should be getting ready to approach us as well," Raiden said.
They headed toward the center of the camp to receive their orders, but it didn’t look like the scouts were coming and going to deliver their messages, so they found their parents a bit troubled... moving at night with little to no information was too dangerous.
The lack of light makes it hard to see terrain, obstacles, or potential threats. This can lead to accidents, such as tripping over hidden hazards or accidentally walking into ambushes.
Without clear landmarks or proper maps, it’s easy to become disoriented. This can result in getting lost or wandering into hostile territory. In the dark, distinguishing between friend and foe becomes challenging. Friendly forces may be mistakenly engaged, leading to unnecessary casualties and confusion.
The enemy might use the cover of darkness to reposition or reinforce their positions. Without real-time intelligence, it’s hard to anticipate these movements and adapt strategies accordingly.
"Didn’t they send any information until now?" Lorene asked with her arms crossed and tapping her fingers.
"They must be busy trying to repair their ranks..." Harth said. "They don’t have the luxury to pay attention to anything else at the moment."
"... They are too ill-prepared for a battle of this scale," Lorene said and then massaged her eyebrows. "With their size, this should be impossible, but I guess the rumors are true."
It was still hard to believe that some people would try to cull their own people in order to attain more power in their own country, but Raiden wasn’t surprised by that... no matter the age, the world, or the land, scum will always exist.
Raiden wondered what he could say and do in that situation... he had already proved his skills as a warrior, but proving his head as a strategist for his age would be even harder. Saying anything to his mother and even if she listens, that will put her in a difficult position, too. Still, that situation had to end...
"What is it, Raiden? I am kind of busy here," Lenore said when Raiden approached.
"The red spearmen aren’t coming, right?" Raiden asked. "They aren’t that good at night raids at this time... if they aren’t doing this, it also means that the other enemies are just using cannons to attack."
"That makes sense, what is your point?" Lenore asked.
"We need to take advantage of this, just like the enemies are taking advantage of their resources," Raiden replied.
"... How so?" Lenore asked.
Lenore couldn’t shake the growing feeling within her as she considered Raiden’s recent performance and now his suggestions. He had always struck her as somewhat of an odd child, his interests and demeanor were different from what she expected in someone so young. Yet, his display of skill and insight during the battle had become the talk of the entire camp. It was a topic of awe and curiosity among the soldiers and leaders alike.
Despite his age and relative inexperience in large-scale conflicts, Raiden had offered strategic advice that caught Lenore off guard. The fact that he wanted to contribute ideas on how to handle the current situation was both surprising and unsettling.
It wasn’t that she doubted his abilities; his performance had proven he had a remarkable talent for combat. However, the idea of him providing strategic counsel in the midst of a high-stakes conflict when he had no formal experience in such matters was difficult, to say the least.
It wasn’t like she didn’t trust him. It was because of his origin... he was supposed to have no memories before he began to work as a slave in that mine, but it was starting to sound like they were still somewhere deep in his mind. She honestly thought that when she heard of his plan.
Around ten minutes after their talk, the entire camp suddenly got dark... the scouts on the enemy’s side suddenly blinked in surprise since they didn’t expect that. Still, it was clear that the warriors of the village were up to something, and they went to alert and prepare the red spearmen.
The scouts reached their resting spot in a matter of minutes and they got up with their weapons ready... the red spearmen rested while sitting on the ground using nothing to support their backs and with their spears in their hands. It was quite the hardcore style of sleeping.
The red spearmen, veterans of countless battles, had not anticipated the warriors from the village to disappear so suddenly into the night. It was a bold move, one that suggested an obvious surprise attack. Their leaders swiftly organized defensive formations, ensuring their troops were ready to counter any ambush.
However, much to their astonishment, the expected attack never came. Hours passed, and the night remained eerily quiet. It was as if the village warriors had vanished without a trace, leaving the red spearmen in a state of heightened alert for an assault that never materialized.
While they were waiting for the attack, the sounds of the cannons being fired began to happen less and less often... it was all because the warriors of the village attacked them instead.
The enemies never expected that, even though they had noticed that the fire in the warriors camp had vanished... the reason for that was the fact that it would be too dangerous to move at night and they were defending, not attacking.
