I Need Money to Level Up
Chapter 59 Challenge
When the enemies started to be attacked, they began to wonder how the warriors crossed those several kilometers so fast while moving their camp... the answer was: they didn’t. They left everything behind and attacked the enemies camps with all of their forces, even the wounded.
"Why are we doing this?" Javier asked while the group was still running silent toward the battlefield. "Is it a good idea to question the sanity of our leader?"
"Sure, it isn’t like she is my mother or anything," Raiden said.
Few people knew that this was Raiden’s idea, so when the orders were passed around silently in the camp, people also questioned Lorene’s mind... running in the darkness when the enemies had cannons seemed like the worst idea ever. Still, soon they reached the area where the cannons were and their fastest warriors soon disposed of the enemies who had them.
The main group soon headed to the enemy’s camp before they could realize what was going on and invaded as well... they never expected that they would be ambushed like that, so a lot of the beastkin were cut down before they had the chance to transform.
The veteran warriors reached the enemies base first and attacked everything in their paths and put on fire the tents, any boxes that they found and also attacked the cannons and those who were repairing those which were not working properly for some reason.
When the younger ones arrived alongside Raiden, their tension increased as they saw a lot of dead people and some who were still alive and trying to crawl to survive... some of them hesitated, but they changed their minds when they saw Raiden coldly disposing of them... their parents were no longer around to cover for them, so they couldn’t take any chances.
"Unless they raise their arms and drop their weapons, attack to kill," Raiden declared.
That was right... they were in a war that the enemies started. They didn’t have any other choice but show as much mercy as the enemies showed to them. Besides, while not many, some of the students had already lost some allies and relatives, those didn’t hesitate in cutting the necks of the enemies on the ground.
Before long, Raiden and the others reached the frontline where the veterans were still fighting the enemies who had the chance to transform. It seemed that was a special ability for the beastskin. In any case, he had the chance to find Iri actually hitting a random enemy with the hilt of her sword on his temple... he was a young beastmen.
Iri sighed in relief, but Raiden raised his eyebrows when he approached and saw her with some claw marks on her arms... that guy clearly attacked her, so why would she show any mercy? The young beast warrior suddenly looked even younger when his transformation wore off... he looked like a wolf boy, no older than Raiden.
"... You know that he is going to suffer a lot more at the hands of the people of this country, right?" Raiden said.
"Mom won’t allow children be killed by our warriors or allies," Iri declared.
Raiden’s perspective was quite practical in this situation. He understands that in the chaos of war, showing mercy can sometimes be seen as a weakness or a potential risk for future retaliation. The grudges and bitterness that can build up from such conflicts are often hard to overcome, and Raiden worried that showing mercy might invite further trouble or resentment from the enemies or even from within their own ranks.
In his view, the immediate need for survival and the harsh realities of war might demand a more ruthless approach to ensure their safety and success. This internal conflict highlights the complexity of leadership and the difficult choices that come with it. Still, he also didn’t feel right in arguing with his sister to tell her to be more ruthless.
Before long, some more pressing matters took his interest... he suddenly heard some loud grunts and then he saw some warriors of the village flying in the air and then their bodies suddenly splitting in several pieces... he opened his eyes widely when he saw that.
When he looked in that direction, he saw a huge beastman with a golden mane around his neck... he truly looked like a lion. At least his head and claws and feet made him look like a lion... everything else made him look like a human.
The beastmen roared with all his might, and then the whole battlefield stopped to look at him... the men sure drew the attention of everyone thanks to his side and prowess. Even Raiden could tell that facing that guy would be the same as a death sentence.
"Warriors of the Force! Bring me your leader so that I can rip her head from her neck! Today, I will show you the price you will have to pay for joining a fight that you had no business in joining!"
"Son of a bitch... now you have done..."
"That is what I wanted to hear!" Lorene’s voice echoed on the battlefield.
Raiden barely had the time to look indignant in that situation... some crazy bastard said that they would kill his mother like that, but it looked like Lenore couldn’t care less about that.
Before long, Lenore crossed the area confidently toward the enemy that was two times taller than her and everyone made way... even Harth. Raiden raised his eyebrows when he saw that. If he were Harth, he would want to kill that guy himself... even if he weren’t strong enough, he would use some cheap tricks to come on top. Pride be damned in that kind of situation.
"It is over now," Iri said while grinning. "Don’t worry about it."
Everyone else was brimming with confidence at the prospect of Lenore’s victory, bolstered by her established reputation and the trust they had in her leadership. However, Raiden’s reaction was very different. Despite the general optimism, he remained uncertain and uneasy. His knowledge of Lenore was limited to her expertise in herbology and other non-combat skills. He had never witnessed her in battle and was unfamiliar with her force techniques or combat abilities.
Raiden’s uncertainty came from a lack of firsthand experience with her fighting prowess. While others relied on their faith in her leadership and the results of her strategies, Raiden’s doubt was rooted in his personal ignorance of her combat capabilities. This contrast in perspective showed the different ways people can perceive leadership and success based on their own experiences and knowledge.
Still, she was the leader of a village of famous warriors, so she should be beyond impressive...
