Chapter 33: Snared In A Loop

A sound of heavy metal footsteps padding against the soft muddy soil rang out.

Seth made his way through a thick haze of dense mist.

The deeper he moved into the field, the darker the surroundings became — which was strange.

One had to recall that it was still about high noon. Finally, after walking for minutes, Seth reached an area absent of the dense mist, a clearing of sorts.

But the moment he took in his surroundings, he frowned hard, a seed of unease blooming in his heart.

"What the fuck happened here..." he hissed in apprehension.

The once lush green school field, filled with bright padded grass, was now a plain of dry, crusting earth.

Cracks ran all over the surface as though all moisture had been sucked dry.

Seth’s pupils constricted as his vision honed upon two dark objects radiating an awful vibe in the distance.

His grip on his broadsword grew tighter, his essence spurring into movement as he recognized what they were — or more accurately, the system informed him.

[Incubating Charm Beast Detected!]

[Nascent Corruption Seed has been detected!! Proceed to destroy immediately!!!]

His heartbeat quickened as goosebumps rose across his back, his gaze focused on the first message for a bit.

The oracle had made itself clear previously: Defiled creatures, as vile and abominably strong as they could be, would always be one step below a Charm Beast.

He let out a shaky breath, his knuckles white from continuously tightening his grip over the sword hilt.

That thing was still in an egg, basically not yet even a hatchling, but the level of danger wafting from it was a whole other level above the Defiled.

Summoning courage, he continued to move forward...

Finally, as he got closer, the outline of two vile objects grew clearer. 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝚠𝕖𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝕖𝚕.𝚌𝗼𝗺

The Charm Beast egg was quite big, comparable to the size of an ostrich’s egg. Its shell carried an onyx shade overlaid with pulsing complex lines of crimson.

Each pulse sent a shudder down Seth’s spine.

"That’s weird..." Seth furrowed his brow suddenly as he felt a tug from his inventory.

It was the oracle crystal, and it was reaching out to Seth for some reason.

Pausing for a bit, he summoned the shimmering emerald crystal orb that pulsed into existence just above his shoulder.

Quickly, the mechanical voice rang out...

[Host is Fortunate! You can find many talented figures among the cosmos, but those blessed by luck are truly rare!]

Seth’s brows raised. "What do you mean?"

[Host has to understand, a corruption zone has several stages and varying outcomes. You are currently in a still-forming corruption zone, which is at about a 28% completion rate!]

The oracle crystal bobbed and pulsed almost as though it was excited. It continued:

[This is an unprecedented fortuitous encounter. A corruption zone this weak means its spawn will merely have the same percentage of strength!]

"Which means dangerous Defiled and unbeatable Charm Beasts are weaker..." Seth’s eyes flashed in shock as he deduced.

’Wait, doesn’t that mean the Defiled I fought were not at their peak?’ His mind echoed in disbelief.

That couldn’t be possible, right? After all, they were so strong.

Meanwhile, the oracle crystal didn’t seem to notice Seth’s stunned deliberation and continued.

[Host should hurry, kill the Charm Beast! Destroy the seed! You will complete the Quest and gain rewards!]

[I can sense the host has reached the peak of the Shackled Rank. To evolve to a higher life form is to ascend the ranks of power and become awakened. To do that, you need Evolution Stones, one of the rewards for completing the Quest.]

The words of the oracle crystal made Seth snap out of his daze. Blinking, his gaze turned to the corruption seed.

It was a small apple-sized blight in space, radiating pure corruption that pulsed with darkness that knew no bounds.

Black bolts of anti-energy plasma sparked around the seed as a revolting aura poured from the small blight, making Seth almost bend over and retch.

His nose scrunched up in disgust, but the appeal of Evolution Stones made his heart race with anticipation.

His sword flashed as he drew a stance, moving closer to the frightening egg nearby first.

’Such a frightening creature... not even born yet, but you radiate such a hair-curling aura,’ Seth muttered in awe.

But regardless, if he wanted to live, it had to die. There was no fairness in the world.

His sword rose through the air, and with the whistling of the wind, it cleaved downward, leaving a powerful trail of grey light.

Crack!

A thin line drew across the onyx-hard shell as the crimson lines dulled. The pure onyx hue faded as cracks ran across the petrified egg, causing it to shatter into a heap of ash.

"So easy?" Seth wondered in shock as he stared at the pile of ash for a few seconds.

[An egg is defenseless. No matter how powerful it could be in the future if hatched, that’s potential — and potential can’t protect geniuses.]

Seth frowned, still shaking his head in disagreement. "But still, I expected more. If we are to go according to your scaling, this should be a beast that terrorized the cosmos. You’d expect more from it, even if it was still in an egg."

The oracle crystal remained silent.

Shaking his head, there was no need to worry about a done deed. The Charm Beast was dead, and that was that.

He turned his gaze coldly to the roiling blight of a seed. He asked, "How do I destroy a seed?"

[All corruption seeds are extremely vulnerable objects. Physical force will do.]

Seth didn’t need to be told twice. His blade flashed, drawing a grey arc across the black seed.

In just that instant, as his strike severed the seed, supposedly destroying it, Seth’s vision spun. His mind went foggy and disoriented.

Before he realized it...

Seth blinked as he walked out of the foggy haze, coming across a vast clearing.

"What the fuck happened here!" he hissed in apprehension.

He stared at the vast clearing of the field, once filled with lush greenery, now nothing but a dry, drought-infested plain.

Quickly, his pupils constricted as his vision honed on two dark objects in the distance, radiating an awful vibe.

His grip over his sword grew tighter as he recognized what those two objects were — or more accurately, the system told him.

[Incubating Charm Beast Detected!!!]

[Nascent Corruption Seed has been detected!!! Please destroy immediately!]

"W-wait, why does this all feel familiar?" His gaze squinted as a foreboding feeling washed over him.

The moment he asked that question, he could have sworn he heard a faint chuckle of an infant.

His heart sank, sweat beading across his temple beneath his visor. He didn’t understand what was happening, but his gut told him something was wrong... very wrong.
