Chapter 32: Sobering Reality

Seth stared at his palms in wonder. He felt so much strength running through them, akin to a flood ripping through a dam.

Each second he remained in this state, the more his prowess grew. His stats didn’t change, his essence pool — though being drained — remained dormant, not enhancing his body.

But somehow he felt that his punch could carry at least twice the strength possible for his stats.

By now his skin color had turned a deeper burning crimson. His figure was more robust and taller, already pushing toward two meters. He could feel the edges of his canines pricking his lips.

Save for the extra arms, he was the living embodiment of an Asura. Crimson flares mixed with a hint of purple poured out of him in waves.

Whoosh!

A pair of shadow-wreathed wings beat against the wind as the skull-headed Defiled flew through the air in a streak toward Seth.

Seth’s pupils locked on the enemy from the edge of his vision. His large hands moved in a slow and deliberate manner.

And in a blink, the Defiled had arrived. But before it could get any closer, a crimson hand clamped tight on its skull head.

Crackle!!

Cracks spread from the vice grip as the monster mobilized its bone pike. Its hollow sockets flared with a brighter shade of red, the sharp pale weapon whistling through the wind, striking against Seth’s chest!

But the imagined effect of skewering its foe didn’t play out. Instead, sparks flew as the rebound knocked the weapon away, twisting its wrist into an odd angle.

Seth’s eyes flashed in amusement. "That’s the best you can do?"

Not expecting a reply, his hands clenched tight, crushing the head into bone powder dust. The headless corpse crumpled to the ground, twitching as drops spilled from its chest.

[Congratulations! You have slain a Shackled Rank Defiled ’Ruan the Fallen’!!!]

[You grow stronger....]

[+58 speed]

[+79 strength]

[+63 essence]

A furious shriek rang from behind him as a figure coated in a resplendent rainbow-like aura raced toward Seth.

He sighed.

’It’s about time I put an end to this farce... they couldn’t show me my limits after all.’

At the beginning, the two Defiled were able to put up a hell of a battle. In fact, even when he used his Armageddon gene skill in full power, the defense skill of the multicolored scaled mutant could resist it to some level. The pressure from the two creatures almost forced Seth to pull out his Grim Executioner’s legendary set.

But it was at that moment he discovered something...

[User’s Asura lineage thrives in the thrill of battle!]

[Gene lineage Asura King bubbles from excitement!]

[User’s ’Asura True Body’ is being forged in the bloody field of battle.]

In essence, the more he fought, the more complete this new form became. And therein lay the problem.

[Asura True Body forging progress: 2.9%]

Barely three percent, and he was already this strong?

’Wasn’t that a bit too broken?’

Seth’s figure spun backward, his palms racing forth with brutal force. In tandem, the Defiled was already before him.

His palms covered the monster’s face, holding tight. In fluid, quick motion, his foot stomped forward, wind warping from the force contained within.

The creature didn’t even have time to react as a sickening scene followed.

Seth’s foot tore deep into the scaled chest of the Defiled. The force traveled through its body.

Normally, such force would have sent the creature flying out of sight. But Seth’s tight grip held the creature’s head in place.

A sound of meat and bone shredding rang out as the body was forced flying without the head.

A bleeding headless corpse landed in the distance, splattering into a bloody paste. The head, still leaking blood from the ripped neck and deformed from the grip, remained in Seth’s grasp.

He released the head, letting it roll across the soil.

[Congratulations! You have slain a Shackled Rank Defiled ’Vire the Scaled’]

[You grow stro...]

The message halted as Seth felt the force of ethereal stats trying to penetrate his cells to make him stronger. It rebounded and diffused into thin air.

Suddenly he felt so full, so saturated. He knew instinctively this was his limit.

’No it isn’t,’ Seth muttered as he felt a force he was far too familiar with — something he had shattered twice. But this time, something told him he couldn’t, even if he tried.

For a brief second, an array of chains digging into his body glistening crimson pulsed into reality before vanishing like they were never there.

[Error!!!!]

[Your stats have reached their limits! To progress further the user has to break the gene lock and evolve to a higher state of life!]

His expression remained neutral as his eyes stayed glued to the message. He had been expecting to reach the ceiling of the Shackled Rank at some point.

After all, during his acquisition of the dual class body, the system told him his limit on stats had doubled. That hint was enough for him to draw a conclusion.

His status flickered into sight.

[Name: Seth Duskreaver

’I see. So that means the normal stat limit for the Shackled Rank is 99. But because of my dual class physique, my cap is higher.’ Seth’s eyes flickered in realization.

He clenched and unclenched his fists with a smile.

’Meaning I should be twice as strong as my peers of the same rank.’

At this point his hands itched with the urge to summon the oracle crystal to answer the question filling his mind.

But unfortunately he held himself back. Now wasn’t the time.

Right now he had to complete the Quest Event.

Another screen flickered into view...

[Quest Event Leaderboard]

2. Brandon Borant: 32 Points

3. Jack Bane: 30 Points

All other names below were grayed out. If he wasn’t sure before, this was proof that every other living soul in the school had been snuffed out.

His homeroom teacher, the vice principal, his peers — every name except five was gray.

Seth couldn’t help but feel more sober. After all, these were hundreds of people, some he had known for years. And just like that, within the span of hours... all dead.

It reminded him of the reality that now things might function like a game, but it wasn’t one and never would be.

There was no such thing as extra lives, no respawns — only game over once dead.

All the feeling of achievement he might have felt vanished. "I still need to get stronger..." he muttered, clenching his fist tight.

The race for survival had just begun. Very soon higher-ranked beings would be born to Earth, if not already. And if he wasn’t prepared, his fate would be no different than his late peers.

His Armageddon skill still activated, he equipped his Grim Executioner’s set. The Gothic black armor coated his body seamlessly, not bothered by the size change.

Right now he didn’t care about the amount of essence this would cost. He had to be at full alert from here on out.

"It’s time I pay that vile seed a visit!" His voice rang from the visor as he started to walk forward.

The sky rumbled and churned.

A cold downpour of rain began to fall as he headed deeper into the field.
