Chapter 36: Race For Survival

"Holy fucking shit! When did these guys grow so strong?" Seth exclaimed as he weaved closely past two attacks.

The void behind him rippled as a familiar creature he had left for them to handle previously appeared suddenly, its arced claws racing through the wind.

Seth’s eyes flashed as his sword swung with zero hesitation, relieving the monster of its arm.

His blade flashed once more, hoping to chop the creature in two.

Then his back tingled. "Ah, fuck!" He couldn’t even react as a flash of lightning crackled in the air. A silhouette streaked forth, delivering a devastating punch to his ribs.

Crunch!

Blood leaked from his mouth as he was sent flying into the air.

Ignition rang out as Brandon catapulted himself into the air with his flames, carrying with him scalding heat that encroached quickly.

A palm filled with raging currents of blistering flames slammed down on Seth from above.

Boom!

His body plummeted like an asteroid, crashing roughly into the earth and kicking up a storm of wind, dust, and debris.

He had barely caught his breath when a figure billowing with a shadowy hue appeared, casting a shadow over Seth and charging a punch.

Seth didn’t dare stay idle, barely rolling away. The punch missed him by a hair’s width, but the shockwave that followed slammed into him, kicking him out of the crater.

Landing in the distance, Seth struggled to his trembling feet, hacking up a mouthful of blood while at it.

There were a lot of problems with this battle. The disadvantage was overwhelmingly stacked against him.

For one, these guys were going all out, using their skills at full strength with wild abandon — something powered by a timely and costly energy: Life Force.

Each strike made them pale and dug into a chunk of their vitality, and they still didn’t seem to care. Surely the Charm Beast’s doing.

In fact, their bodies had deteriorated so much they couldn’t withstand their output anymore.

And it didn’t help that Seth was worried about killing or severely injuring anyone, while he was also too weak, fighting the urge to blackout with a body that resisted battle.

[Your body has reached its limit. Every second you remain conscious, you lose 1% of your stats.]

"This is bad. I have to end this quick!" Seth’s expression went solemn on reading the grim texts.

His eyes scanned the four slowly surrounding him, but they weren’t his true target.

He needed to get to that Charm Beast and slay it get to that Charm Beast and slay it before it could finish whatever sinister metamorphosis it was undergoing.

If that creature hatched, he didn’t need a system or oracle to tell him — death would be inevitable. No level of evolution or upgrade could bridge that gap in strength so quickly.

"It’s all or nothing!" Seth resolutely made a decision. If possible, he would have avoided this option.

[Vitality has been compromised! -23 Vitality!]

A large pour of power trickled into his nodes as his figure warped. "Equip!"

No matter how powerful that Charm Beast was, in the end it was still a Shackled Rank creature. And with his Absolute Weapon Resonance fueling his Grim Executioner’s set, there was a 75% chance of instantly killing the damned thing if his blade so much as nicked it.

He barreled forward, a wave of heavy gust blasting all four attackers away.

"DON’T YOU DARE!!" A furious voice shrieked — it was the Charm Beast.

It had constantly kept its attention on Seth, silently hoping their fury would be enough to stall him.

But now, how could it not recognize that armor?

It was the same Seth had worn when he first waltzed in here. It remembered the shuddering aura he carried when he first arrived.

It had immediately mobilized its vast corrupt essence to seal Seth into a soul spell, because it knew — if this man got close, that would be its end.

Over hours, it had slowly ground away at Seth’s essence and power. When that was gone, it went straight to his vitality. It was so very close to its desired outcome.

But the bastard’s resilient mind, riled up from the scent of near death, began working against its spell.

Heck, somehow he even figured out the spell’s eye and broke it, escaping from its clutches.

It was indignant as it was terrified. It had hoped it had ground Seth’s edge enough for him to be unable to show it anymore. Yet...

The Charm Beast could practically smell death proliferating in the air as Seth’s frame loomed closer.

"No, stay away!" A tempest of corruption raged across the field.

Heavy gales of corrupted essence tore through the plain. The ground rumbled and trembled, some sides rising, other areas sinking.

In fact, before Seth, the earth parted — a trench splitting, molten lava yawning.

His frame leapt, scaling across the chaotic field, rapidly getting closer to his prey.

The stifling chill of death grew thicker in the air, and the shriek of the Charm Beast had long lost its human pitch.

A screech grating to the ear rang out, like a shard of glass scraping the surface of metal.

Seth didn’t blink, his eyes glued to his prey. His body grew weaker, his organs shutting down one after the other until only his heart, brain, and adrenal gland were left.

But he didn’t care. All he cared for was to kill, to survive. His will practically spilled his intentions into the void around him.

An ethereal flame flickered, coating his figure.

"Kill! Kill! Kill!" His mind was long incoherent, unable to muster any other thoughts. He took as much as he needed without care or fear.

[Vitality has been compromised! -13 Vitality]

[Vitality has been compromised! -4 Vitality]

[Vitality has been compromised! -9 Vitality]

On and on it went, but he didn’t halt. He didn’t spare a moment of care for the loss. He just knew he had to kill!

The crimson glowing cracks spread wider across the onyx shell of the Charm Beast.

At this point, it was also frenzied.

How dare an ant threaten it to this level?

It didn’t care for the fact that it was sacrificing its future potential to hatch prematurely.

This act would surely permanently damage the corruption seed, turning this place into a malformed corruption zone weaker than it should have been.

But the Charm Beast didn’t care. If it didn’t act now, wouldn’t the outcome be worse?

It poured devastating amounts of corrupted essence into its surroundings, causing all manner of impediments it could muster. Anything — anything to buy time. Even just a second longer would be worth it.

A pillar of earth launched Seth into the sky as the Charm Beast felt giddy.

"It’s here!" The childlike voice exclaimed elatedly.

As its cracks started to widen and part, it was finally about to complete its metamorphosis!

In the sky, Seth’s frame spun uncontrollably, beads of blood seeping from his armor.

Looking beneath, Seth’s skin was cracked, blood bubbling out, all seven of his orifices leaking blood.

But his bloodshot eyes never once lost their mark. He saw what was happening below.

"No, not on my watch!" His voice boomed as an ashen gray aura spurted from his blade.

His will flamed into tangibility. His figure steadied in the air as he began to plummet.

An echo carrying Seth’s resentment, his fear, his rage, his hatred and his will to live resonated across the skies. "DEATH SENTENCE!"

Reality halted. Everything turned gray.

"What is happening?" The terrified voice of the Charm Beast rang out.

A wooden pillory appeared around it, clamping shut, forcing all parting cracks closed, the crimson flare it gave dulling.

It burst into a panicked frenzy, mustering all it could.

But as Seth had mentioned at the beginning, it was injured. Pushing it this far was already a stretch.

If it had emerged from its shell, then maybe it would have had a chance to change fate. But now?

A streak of black descended from the sky, Seth holding his blade up high with both hands as he rode the wind.

He poured his all into this. His will seeped into the blade, a tangible flame of purple igniting amid the sea of gray!

And in a split second of silence, the blade descended. There was no sound or reaction, as though reality itself couldn’t respond in time...
