Seth didn’t dare hesitate. He summoned the set from his inventory.
And it responded.
Gothic obsidian-black armor clamped around Seth’s frame, a fluttering black cape now added to the set.
Finally, his greatsword pulsed into reality, levitating before him.
The moment his hands grabbed the weapon, it hummed excitedly, rattling with anticipation.
Seth’s essence flowed into the cold steel of the blade. Amped by his Absolute Weapon Resonance gene skill, the aura of the weapon and armor grew colder.
Seth closed his eyes, basking in the rush of strength supplied by the Grim Executioner’s Set, which in turn was bolstered by his ability.
His will reached and tugged on the second ability of the weapon.
In actuality, weapons — unlike sentient lifeforms — couldn’t have more than one skill in most cases, regardless of rank and grade.
But Seth’s Grim Emperor’s Executioner’s Legendary Set was above this restriction because technically speaking, it wasn’t one item.
It was a cohesion of myriad items, hence the term set.
A wave of gray rippled through the terrain, encompassing both his and Jack’s battlefield.
The charging beasts behind Seth suddenly found themselves moving slower, their charge carrying far less force.
And their essence usage seemed to have doubled.
Seth turned. Before he saved Jack, he had to take care of these few.
From his estimates, while donning the Grim Executioner’s Set, his strength should have completely bridged into the early stage of the Noble tier.
Meaning he didn’t need tricks to win anymore — he could simply overwhelm this hoard with sheer power.
His sword moved, ringing with a faint hum as his essence trait Oscillation ran through the blade.
He swiped. A line of black drew from the tip, arcing into the distance and sweeping through the hoard unimpeded.
Though due to distance and the scattered terrain, he didn’t get them all.
But they would have to wait. His metal boots dug into the earth, knees bending as he catapulted himself forward.
Bang!
Jack’s frame finally came to a halt, pinned underneath the horns of the silver-scaled bull against a small hill.
An ichor of shadows streamed from his abdomen as Jack grabbed the bull by the horns — literally.
Struggling to pull the beast off him, he clenched his jaws tight, pained grunts escaping as agony ebbed from the punctured wound.
Such a fatal injury would surely require a huge amount of essence to heal — something Jack didn’t have.
Which meant he’d have no choice but to relinquish this form. But if he dared do that, how would he battle this monster?
’How did these monsters merge? Was it an ability or a trait?’ he thought, before pain jolts stung deeper, breaking his focus.
Steam fumed from the bull’s nostrils. All four limbs bulged with steel-coiled muscles, hooves digging deeper into the earth as cracks spread across the terrain.
It pushed, and Jack resisted — something he couldn’t keep up for long.
Jack could feel death breathing on his neck. No matter what he did, he felt he would still die.
Not that the blinding pain allowed coherent thought. His grip over the horns grew tighter.
His muscles bulged harder, veins popping across his shadow-wreathed flesh.
’If only I could use my ability to a higher degree,’ he hissed through pain, as more shadow ichor bubbled.
Was this it?
Was this where he would die?
His grip weakened, golden pupils dulled, crimson glyphs dimmed.
He was going to die!
These words echoed in his head, sounding more like a declaration than a possibility.
’Not if I can help it!’ Suddenly his eyes blazed, grip fastening tight, jaw grinding harder.
In the distance, Seth — rushing his way — halted upon a crown of a tree.
Spectating, his eyes shone brightly, a grin pasted beneath his visor.
’He’s breaking through...’ Seth realized instantly.
The pressure of near-death had stimulated Jack, like metal forged by the greatest blacksmith — death itself.
Jack had no option but to break his limits or die trying.
The pressure of a power far outclassing him and the stifling future of death bore down. His body was stimulated, energy churned.
The active racial trait of the human race, Adrenal Boost, revved like an engine.
A surge of warm essence streamed through his body. His stats soared. His cells digested all excess energy in an instant.
His body assimilated everything it had gained. Joints popped, bones hardened, skin gleamed, defense soared.
His arteries widened, facilitating higher blood flow. His essence soared in quantity, quality, and density.
He pulled more on the Titan’s Shadow. His frame ballooned larger, a billowing wave of shadow boiling forth.
His brilliant gold pupils blazed. Muscles bulged. Feet tore deeper into the earth. Grip fastened impossibly tighter.
Crack!
The horns of the massive bull gave in to Jack’s staggering might.
Cracks ran through the lustrous metallic silver protrusions, splintering into shimmering shards in a beat.
Moooooooooooo!
The bull let out a horrendous screech of pain, as though its lifeline had just shattered.
Its aura plummeted. Without horns, did it still dare call itself a bull?
Jack’s fists clasped tight together, raised high.
The bull reeled from pain, unable to evade.
A thunderous bellow rang out. The wind clapped with furious wave as the clasped fists struck straight upon the giant creature’s head.
For the first time, the scales showed damage. Cracks bubbled with blood across its skull.
It reeled uncontrollably backward, staggering heavily.
A gaping hole remained in Jack’s abdomen, but he hardly cared. The bleeding ichor had long halted.
Jack pressed forward, golden eyes simmering brightly as a tempest of shadows raged...
---
Across the battlefield in the distance...
A figure rushed out of the dense foliage, bloodied and tattered, her hair riding the wind.
Behind her, the forest rumbled as a deadly wave of silver-scaled Viagra Bulls swept forward like a tide.
Elaine’s gaze flashed with reprehension. Those things had crushed her army like a rolling millstone on eggs.
Her Frozen army stood zero chance. Initially, she believed she could use the same strategy from the third wave against the fourth.
But she was very wrong. These things had abnormal defense. No matter what she did, she couldn’t leave even a scratch on their stainless silver scales.
She had no choice but to follow the commotion, hoping to find Seth or the others for reinforcement.
’Naturally, I won’t stoop to betting on Seth to save me. I have my own pride,’ she thought coldly.
Her eyes gleamed with glee as she sensed the reinforcement she desperately needed.
Her bloodstained pale-blue lips cracked, a pale smile lighting her cold features.
She stretched her hand. "Rise!"
A vast torrent of essence surged from her figure, a chill infiltrating the air...
Across the battlefield, all corpses were covered by a thin sheet of ice which within seconds began to crack.
A few drawn-out seconds of silence reigned... and the eyes of the dead snapped open.
