Chapter 54: Chapter 54: An Unexpected Visitor

Xiao Fenghao thought he was seeing it wrong. His mother and twin sisters were still busy in the kitchen, and he thought he could take his youngest sister for a walk since they didn’t need to be wary anymore of the escaping child trafficker.

"Brother...?" Xiao Qingya asked in puzzlement, tugging on his sleeve.

She wanted to go out, but Xiao Fenghao abruptly closed the door again after opening it.

"Little Ya, wait for a moment." He put his hand on his chest, thinking that he was hallucinating because he was sleepy.

He took a few deep breaths and rubbed his eyes. Slowly, he opened the door again.

Unfortunately, the person was still there!

Xiao Qingya managed to take a peek at the figure standing outside their door. It was Chen Huayun. She was currently wearing a stiff smile on her face, as if she wanted to get angry but was trying hard not to.

"Fenghao, open the door and let me inside." Chen Huayun ordered, and a moment later, her voice softened. "I am bringing your family something. It’s still so early, you all haven’t eaten breakfast yet? There’s no need to trouble yourselves in the kitchen."

Xiao Fenghao’s skin crawled with goosebumps at the sound. He seemed uncomfortable that the old woman who was usually always looking down on them and speaking in her shrill voice was actually acting so gentle.

His eyes flashed with wary light.

"There’s no need." He frowned, and his breath hitched the moment Chen Huayun stuck her foot in the door.

He couldn’t close it.

Before he could kick Chen Huayun’s foot, the latter already moved quickly, perhaps fueled by anger. She slammed the door open, wincing as she massaged her foot.

Still, she desperately maintained a kind expression despite the bulging veins on her temples.

Chen Huayun set the bamboo basket down on the table. She massaged her foot briefly before she went to the kitchen.

Everything had happened so fast that it took the pair of siblings for a while for them to react.

[Little Ya, you see. If someone who doesn’t like you suddenly acts nice toward you, they usually have ulterior motives.]

Xiao Qingya nodded seriously, and a mischievous look glinted into her eyes. She glanced at the kitchen, waiting for her mother and sisters to appear from there.

On the other side, Xiao Fenghao already walked toward the bamboo basket, opening it and inspecting one rice ball before he put it back inside.

"Brother... why grandma come?" Xiao Qingya asked, pretending to be clueless.

Xiao Fenghao closed the leaves wrapping around the rice balls. He hadn’t found it to be suspiciously poisonous, but he couldn’t be certain for now.

He picked her up. "She is not a good person. Little Ya should stay away from her, okay? Just stay with Brother."

Babies usually had short memories and rarely held grudges, and it was perfectly in line with Xiao Qingya’s current actions.

"Why?" She tilted her head in confusion, her eyes full of innocence. "Grandma... can’t come... with us?"

Xiao Fenghao flicked her little forehead gently, and through her conversation with the System, he generally understood what the little mischievous one wanted to do.

Since Chen Huayun was pretending and reining in her temper, why don’t they make use of her free labor force? Let’s just see how far she could keep up with her act.

The group of women appeared from the kitchen.

Chen Huayun was gripping the twins’ hands, smiling as if she was a kind grandmother who was happy seeing her granddaughters.

Xiao Yuxi desperately tried to pull her hand from Chen Huayun’s grasp, eyes wide filled with resistance. Alas, the old woman’s grip was too strong. Xiao Yuyan pursed her lips, looking incredibly uncomfortable.

Behind them, Zhou Anran twitched her mouth and sighed. She was carrying a huge bowl of rice in one hand and stir-fried vegetables on the other hand.

"I already brought you some food, why bother cooking so much?" Chen Huayun clicked her tongue.

After the children took their share of rice, she put one rice ball on their plate. The Xiao siblings were at a loss, wondering whether they should eat or not.

"Mother, it’s so early in the morning. It must have been so much trouble for you to come here and prepare food... we can do it ourselves," Zhou Anran explained. She was really worried.

Chen Huayun snorted, and inwardly thought. Why would she bother to come if not for the soy milk recipe? Once she got her hands on it, she wouldn’t even bother to come!

Remembering her purpose, Chen Huayun ordered them, "Eat! I already prepared so much for all of you."

She took a bite of the rice balls, her mind wandering. Today, once she got her hand on the recipe, she could sell it to other merchants. Wouldn’t the money be enough for her eldest son? So many silver taels!

Others didn’t dare to take a bite of the rice balls. They secretly put it back into the bamboo basket when Chen Huayun didn’t notice, too busy daydreaming. They didn’t forget to cover it up.

Once they finished eating, Chen Huayun turned to Zhou Anran. "Ran’er, can we talk?"

Zhou Anran bit her lip. That nickname sounds too weird coming out of Chen Huayun’s mouth.

"Mother, we are going to the fields soon. If we delay any longer, the sun might become too hot." She paused. "If you need something from me, how about I visit your house later?"

Chen Huayun’s face fell. She pursed her lips, her face taut, eyes slightly narrowed in disapproval. If this wretched daughter came to their house, wouldn’t her husband notice what she was planning?

In order to deliver the rice balls here, she even had to use her eldest son as an excuse.

"It will just take a moment." Chen Huayun’s hand reached to grab Zhou Anran.

Xiao Fenghao appeared in front of her mother in time, causing her to grab his sleeve instead.

"Grandmother, how about you come to the fields with us? You will have a lot of time to talk to Mother there."
