Inner Thoughts Exposed: Reborn General's Farming Daughter Has a System
Chapter 61: Letter to Eldest Brother
Physician Li had delivered the letter from Xiao Jingran to them. He had received it when he was in the town.
Except for Xiao Fenghao who was currently lying in his own room, all of the family members surrounded the letter.
[Eldest Brother is asking whether Second Brother has been stirring trouble for the family? Wow, there’s really a telepathy between brothers!]
Zhou Anran’s eyes visibly widened, and so were the twins’. They didn’t expect that Xiao Qingya could already read the letter at such a young age.
She remembered and recognized the characters quite well.
Before the Zhou family was exiled in the previous dynasty, they were all educated people. Zhou Wenzhi also never differentiate between son or daughter.
He taught all of his kids to read and write. Zhou Anran, knowing the importance of education, also taught her children to be illiterate.
Her husband, Xiao Wei, also could read very well. He and his wife always took turns teaching their children. Hence, whether it was the two elder brothers or the twin sisters, they were all literate people.
Xiao Qingya was a girl, and even though she died young, she could read. It seemed that either the world in her previous life was different from theirs or she was also born in a well-educated family.
"Mother, should we tell Eldest Brother about Second Brother’s condition?" Xiao Yuxi asked.
Zhou Anran touched her daughter’s soft hair, and she fell silent, pondering over the suggestion. "Yan’er, go get the writing tools here, ink, brush, and papers."
Xiao Yuyan nodded. She got up, and went to find ink and papers.
Other than asking about their second brother, Xiao Jingran told them the experience during his travels. Even though these things seemed to be trivial, it was evident Xiao Jingran wanted to talk to them more.
"... I learned a lot from my Master during this time. He says that my skills have improved by leaps and bounds."
His Master was quite strict sometimes, but he was a good teacher.
"I found out about more herbs and their uses during this time. Such herbs seem to grow deeper in the back mountain. Once I return, I will bring Xi’er and Yan’er to find them."
He must have also missed home.
Xiao Jingran always mentioned the things he wanted to do once he returned.
Not long after, Xiao Yuyan returned. She handed over the writing tools to her mother. Her feelings became a little more complicated.
She remembered that the ink, brush, and papers were bought by their father, Xiao Wei. He often emphasized learning and wanted his children to be educated people.
It made his ideals somewhat quite out of place with their current era and identity as farmers.
Even if the ink and papers run out, he would always find a way to make money to buy more. For farming families like them, ink and papers were still luxury, and they wouldn’t casually waste them.
When they don’t have enough paper anymore, they often practice on sand and dirt on the ground.
"Let’s tell your Eldest Brother." Zhou Anran decided.
Since Xiao Qingya was there, they couldn’t say much. The System’s perception has also increased lately. They could only discuss things more openly during Xiao Qingya’s sleeping time—when the System also stayed dormant.
Anyway, it has been so many months since they last saw each other. Xiao Jingran should return if he wanted to.
The plot that Xiao Qingya and the System discussed also often made her uneasy. She was always worried something would happen to her eldest son since he was out in such faraway lands.
After all, according to the System, their lives would no longer be as simple and peaceful anymore.
Zhou Anran drew the characters on the paper, full of concentration. Xiao Yuyan retreated a little farther, fiddling with her fingers. She was also worried her mother would suddenly confront her about the medicine given by Zhou Wanrou.
However, even after Physician Li left, her mother never mentioned it to her. Is she only overthinking about it?
Zhou Anran wrote a long letter detailing their recent updates. Since her eldest son put more emphasis on her troublesome second son, she only told him about the recent matter.
In order not to make him worry too much, she deliberately hid Xiao Qingya’s accident and Xiao Yuxi’s skin problem. She believed that her second son’s condition alone would be enough to make him return.
"Do you have anything to say to your eldest brother?" Zhou Anran asked her daughters.
Xiao Yuxi’s eyes lit up, her smile mischievous. "Mother, let me write it myself."
She took the brush and paper from Zhou Anran enthusiastically, then she began to write.
Xiao Qingya took a peek. Compared to Zhou Anran, the characters Xiao Yuxi drew were a little more crooked, but they were still readable.
"Eldest Brother, you have travelled so many lands. Did you meet a beautiful woman on the way? Make sure to bring our sister-in-law home and introduce her to us!"
[Oh, you can request things?] Xiao Qingya blinked.
After she was done, Xiao Yuxi turned to her youngest sister. "Little Ya, do you want to say something to Eldest Brother too?"
The little one nodded. "Food!"
Xiao Yuxi was amused. "You want Eldest Brother to bring some local varieties from the place he has travelled to?"
This little baby was so easy to please!
Seeing Xiao Qingya nodded, she added a few more words. "Don’t forget to bring delicious food for our Little Ya too, Eldest Brother."
Xiao Yuxi handed over the brush and paper to Xiao Yuyan with an encouraging look. "Say something to Eldest Brother, Yan’er."
Xiao Yuyan briefly stared at the paper before she took the brush and paper from her elder sister. She pondered over the words before she wrote them down.
"Travel safely, Eldest Brother. We will be waiting for you home." After that, she began to talk about herbs. "Elder Sister and I found more unfamiliar plants the last time we visited the back mountain. We will show it to you once you return."
"We will always be waiting for you at home," she added.
Her message was quite warm, in contrast to Xiao Yuxi’s teasing words.
While Zhou Anran was busy taking care of the household matters—washing the dishes and the clothes—the twins were feeding their second brother for dinner.
To be exact, it was Xiao Yuyan who was mainly feeding him. She was more gentle and considerate than her elder sister.
Every time Xiao Yuxi did it, Xiao Fenghao would hissed in pain.
The whole family had dinner earlier than usual. They were worried Xiao Fenghao would be too hungry if he needed to wait for them to finish at their usual time.
"Eat a lot, Second Brother," Xiao Yuxi decided to take the role of cheering for him.
Xiao Fenghao rolled his eyes, and he snorted softly before he winced in pain.
After he was done eating dinner, Xiao Yuyan took the dirty bowl to the kitchen. Now, there was only Xiao Yuxi and Xiao Qingya there.
Xiao Yuxi didn’t hide it from her second brother. "Eldest Brother, might be coming home soon..."
"You are finished," She added a warning, trying to put on what she thought to be a kind smile.
