Chapter 56 - 15 Magic Test_3
Ah Dai was taken aback and blurted out, "Does the test cost money? Uncle never mentioned that. How much is it?"
The Old Magician extended five fingers, shaking them slightly, saying, "Not much, just five gold coins."
Five gold coins, Ah Dai started counting on his fingers, a gold coin was worth ten silver coins that was worth a hundred copper coins, one copper coin could buy two steamed buns, so five gold coins could buy a thousand steamed buns. A thousand steamed buns? That was enough for him to eat for several months. He stuttered, "Sir, can you, can you reduce the price a bit?"
The Old Magician snorted disdainfully saying, "Reduce? How? It’s a set rate. If you don’t have the money, just leave now. Come back when you have enough."
Ah Dai touched the money bag that Feng Ping had just given him, bit the bullet, took out the bag, hoping that there were silver coins inside, which should barely add up to five gold coins. He put the money bag on the table, untied the top knot, glanced at the Old Magician, and opened the money bag. As the bag opened, both Ah Dai and the Old Magician were stunned, because within was full of gold coins, and there were even seven or eight purple crystal coins.
The Old Magician couldn’t help but say, "You look quite poor with your outfit, I didn’t expect you to be so rich."
Ah Dai didn’t care about the amount of money, as long as he could take the magic test to become a magician, to fulfill Owen’s wish, he would be satisfied. He took out five gold coins and handed them to the Old Magician saying, "Can I take the test now?"
The Old Magician snorted, saying, "Didn’t expect you, with your poor attire, to have such money. Alright, wait here." With that, he walked through a little door to the back hall.
After a while, the Old Magician and a Blue Robed Magician came out, saying, "Vice President, it’s him. Look at him dressed as a samurai, how can he be a magician?"
The Blue Robed Magician looked to be about forty or fifty years old. Hearing this, he glared at the Old Magician saying, "Old Huang, you’re getting increasingly audacious. Although we magicians are a noble profession, you can’t treat outsiders like this! If other branches find out we’re tarnishing the reputation of magicians, I’ll be in a lot of trouble. Do you no longer wish to guard the front gate?"
The Old Magician quickly smiled apologetically, "No, No, Vice President, I was wrong, it won’t happen again."
The Blue Robed Magician nodded in satisfaction, approached Ah Dai, and Ah Dai clearly felt very strong mental fluctuations from this magician in the blue robe.
The Blue Robed Magician kindly said, "Young man, are you here to take the magician test?"
Ah Dai nodded, saying, "Yes, I’ve already paid, should we start now?" With the money that Feng Ping gave him, he wanted to finish up here quickly and return the money to the steamed bun shop owner. The shop owner had been so good to him, Ah Dai always felt he owed him a lot.
The Blue Robed Magician smiled slightly, extending his hand towards Ah Dai, "Here, take back your five gold coins."
Ah Dai was taken aback, said quickly, "I, I really am a magician! I don’t need the money, please start the test."
The Blue Robed Magician smiled, pointing at the Old Magician, "Young man, I apologize for his earlier actions on our behalf. We don’t charge any fees for magician testing, he was intentionally trying to make things difficult for you seeing that you didn’t look like a magician. Here’s your money back, I’ll perform the magic test for you right away."
Only then did Ah Dai accept the gold coins from the Blue Robed Magician, carefully putting them back into the money bag. Without waiting for him to urge any further, the Blue Robed Magician said, "Follow me." He led Ah Dai into the back hall.
The back hall was a square room, upon entering, Ah Dai immediately felt strong magic fluctuations from the surrounding walls and ceiling.
Realizing Ah Dai’s confusion, the Blue Robed Magician explained, "Since we use this place for testing, protective barriers have been applied within these walls. Feel free to use your magic without any reservations. My name is Kigg, I’m the local Magic Guild Chapter president. Alright, you can start now."
Ah Dai was a bit confused, start? What start? It was his first time at the Magic Guild, how was he supposed to know how to do the magic test? "Uncle Kigg, how do I— how do I start?"
Kigg slightly furrowed his brow. He was the only Grand Magician in the city. Normally anyone who saw him would address him as "Sir Grand Magician," yet this boy in front of him was calling him "uncle." However, the always generous Kigg naturally wouldn’t be petty with a child, and mildly said, "Just perform your strongest, most powerful magic. Whatever your specialty, use that."
"Oh." Ah Dai replied. The best and most powerful one, that would be Meteor Fire. He recalled the spell, getting ready to start chanting, but noticed that Kigg was still standing in front of him. He kindly said, "Uncle Kigg, could you move aside a bit? I’m afraid the magic might hurt you."
Kigg smiled slightly, saying, "Your magic can’t hurt me. Go ahead and cast it." In his view, considering Ah Dai’s age, he was at most a junior magician.
At the same time Ah Dai was preparing for the magician level test, Feng Ping was regretting deeply in the Mercenary Guild, pacing back and forth in the room muttering to himself, "I’m so silly! How could I let that lad Ah Dai just leave? A master’s passing is a major event in the sect, I should have gone back first to report, ah—, I’m really too stupid. I must hurry back to report to Master, otherwise, once this is investigated later, I’ll bear a huge responsibility. Ah Dai’s already been gone awhile, nevermind, I don’t have time to find him now, I have to go back to the sect and report." Thinking this, Feng Ping quickly packed his luggage, gave a few instructions to his men, rode a fast horse, and dashed towards the city gate.
