Master Of None
Chapter 2878. Let’s go hunt
"She really doesn’t need to sleep more than this though." The rough tone was more than fair, since Midnight came back to the mansion, she had been sleeping for the past three days straight.
While she needed the time to rest after her breakthrough just as Ignus and the other royal dragons had taken their time to rest after becoming dominator dragons, it was all too clear that Midnight was taking advantage of things.
She had woken up and snuck in to the kitchen to eat fruit and sweets three times that Su had caught her. The last time being the triple chocolate cake she had hoarded for herself after she went out to train a few more guards. With that gone, she had been extremely angry, the only reason that she didn’t drag Midnight out to teach her a lesson was the fact that she was too busy to do so right now.
However, today was the end of that. She had told Walker that Midnight either heads out and gets to some work, or Su will drag her to the training ground and force her to show off every single new skill and strength she had to the point that Midnight was so exhausted, three days would not be enough sleep to recover. And it was a sure thing that Su could think up a training that could do such a thing.
As Walker moved in to the room with a bed with far too many pillows, he noticed Midnight pretend to sleep while hiding her head under a pillow. But the soft swish of a tail was all too clearly showing she was awake and thinking of herself as the neatest person there was.
"Today you and I are going to hunt for some special chocolate ingredients so you can make up to Su what you took from her. Coincidentally, the plants that are used to make it are threatened because of the monsters eating them in the demi-human farms. I requested the job be left to us since we can handle them better and we can also study the monsters." Walker left that as it was since he didn’t want to get too in to the details right away.
Yet, the thoughts about the reports given to him were weighing on his mind.
Ancient monsters had been found dormant, as remnants, or even perfectly alive lately. Plenty of the species recently discovered were in the wild continent that was being explored slowly but surely now.
The issue was that this had been a group of monsters that suddenly appeared from underneath a few farm fields and were wreaking havoc on a larger section of fields that produced specialized fruits, vegetables, and trees close to seventy years old. The immense amount of work done to care for those plants was keeping the livelihood of almost three hundred demi-human citizens!
The question of corrupt mana had been brought up but had been dismissed since the monsters were not acting oddly, they were just consuming plants rapidly and their numbers were growing rapidly too.
Several merchants have already complained and if there was not something done yet, the merchant guild would be placing high bounties on these monsters. This was something that was best avoided since it could cause a lot of people to rush there and become uncontrolled while hunting and accidentally destroying more crops in the mess.
A large breath of air huffed out before Midnight showed herself and stood up. Walker had been surprised by her new appearance but had sensed the changes through their bond. So he had the best intentions to compliment her before realizing that all Midnight wanted was a reward shown in trust.
She had easily conveyed the feeling that she wanted to use her strength to stand beside him rather than fall behind, so, he was showing her that he needed her with him and even if they were working on separate tasks, that they stood together.
Not to mention the fact that he now knew she was able to combat some more powerful opponents. She had been ecstatic to hear him mention that he wouldn’t worry so much when they went to the elemental planes again to explore and to help there.
With this, the two set off knowing that they would face a problem they could solve much better than others. And definitely faster.
Travel with a Walker had reached an all time low. While Midnight’s advancement was something she was keeping reserved, Walker was challenging himself with teleportation.
Pushing his limits and moving further and further away using the same amount of mana and as he did so he made a scene here and there.
The image of Walker teleporting around was causing people to talk. How Walker could use teleportation without a formation easily was already a rumor, but now it was becoming a phenomenon. Something people talked about as goals or maybe as something easier to achieve than they had once expected.
It was even more impressive when they saw him do so multiple times over short distances. It was the key reason why Midnight was now regretting the snacking she had done before they left thinking she was sneaky.
The simple reason being, her body was not as resistant to space mana as she had believed it to be.
The teleportation skill Walker had gained was limited. He could short distance and mid range distance teleport well enough. One slower than the other because of mana needs and concentration. But mixing dense manas with it and pushing the skill he could cover further distances more often.
Exactly what was causing the space mana to wear on Midnight more than it would have previously? As such, after the seventh teleportation she was looking like she might lose her meal and he was finding it somewhat amusing.
It did bring them right to the edge of the larger farm territory that they needed to be in. Midnight just chose to accept that since she had lost track of distance as a whole at the moment.
This gave Walker a moment to stretch his mana senses out and locate a few guards patrolling the perimeter of the farmland. They were a bit more armored than normal, most likely due to the fact that they had to be prepared for the monsters getting out of hand. If they spread outside of this farm, then the nearby farms could be victims too.
With a grab of Midnight’s arm and a single step, they were right in front of the five guards patrolling, giving them a fair shock. Not that this was an unusual situation to be shocked about.
However, they did quickly lower their weapons realizing that Walker was easily identified by the robes he wore and the eternal codex acting in book form floating next to him.
"Our captain warned us to be on alert for your presence. Hero, thank you for coming. We were all given these reports in case we met you before the captain." Quickly the lizard trait Demi-huma guard handed over a few rolled papers. It appeared to be appraisals of the monsters with some missing information.
"Thank you for the appraisals. I will try to add to them when I can." He gave them a nod while he and Midnight started to move rapidly toward the actual farms and not just the edges where they were now.
The damage was quick to find.
A few trees missing leaves and younger branches. Some piles of what could only be droppings from the monsters. And what appeared to be small claw marks digging for the smaller roots as food.
"If you’re feeling better, do you want to sniff out our prey?" Walker saw Midnight had grown a bit steadier on her feet. He had already considered having to help everyone train their space mana resistance if they would be able to teleport more often in the coming future. Especially if he was going to teleport himself and them from anywhere in the world to the elemental planes.
After a moment of looking around, Walker realized that despite the clear non movement, Midnight was already sniffing the air with scrutiny. Apparently, her sense of smell was even sharper and she didn’t need as deep of breaths to track down anything that might be called prey.
It also presented and addition to her strength as a scout too.
This aside, Midnight pointed ahead and to the left. For them, they had a direction and a field full of taller trees that seemed worse for wear to hunt around.
The small brown piles on the ground shifted too, proving that it wasn’t just the trees these monsters might be hiding in. "Let’s sneak up and get a better look." The two wrapped themselves in dark mana creating shadows to hide in while moving slowly forward.
