Milf harem of Serpent King
Chapter 64: Exploring the bloodline skills
The flight to Deepwood Forest took forty minutes of cold wind and darkness broken only by Syrath’s occasional gouts of flame that lit the air ahead of them in brief orange flashes. Jake held on and tried not to think about how far they were above the ground, focusing instead on the distant tree line that marked their destination, growing closer with each powerful wingbeat.
They landed in a clearing near the forest’s edge where the trees grew dense and old, their canopy blocking most of the starlight and creating darkness that felt solid and textured.
Syrath settled into a resting position while Raani dismounted and helped Jake down, both of them steady on their feet despite the flight.
"The dungeon entrance is half a mile into the forest," Raani said, pulling a small crystal from her pack that began glowing with soft white light when she activated it. 𝑓𝓇𝘦ℯ𝘸𝘦𝑏𝓃𝑜𝘷ℯ𝑙.𝑐𝑜𝓂
"Follow me."
The walk through Deepwood Forest was quiet except for the sounds of their boots on the forest floor and the occasional distant calls of night creatures that didn’t sound entirely natural. The trees here were enormous, their trunks wider than Jake was tall, their roots spreading across the ground in networks that required careful navigation. The air smelled of earth and decay and something else that Jake’s blood-sense registered as vaguely threatening without being able to specify why.
The dungeon entrance appeared suddenly through the trees, and Jake stopped when he saw it, taking in the scale of what he was looking at.
It was a castle.
Not ruins or a cave mouth or any of the other dungeon entrances Jake had seen in his years as a low-rank adventurer.
A full castle, rising from the forest floor like it had been dropped there intact from somewhere else, its walls dark stone that looked ancient and solid, its towers reaching upward through gaps in the canopy where they caught the faint starlight.
The main gates stood open, and Jake could see people moving in and out even at this hour—adventuring parties returning from dives, solo fighters heading in with the confidence of experience or the desperation of debt.
"Ghoul Sanctum," Raani said quietly.
"One of the oldest dungeons in the eastern territory. No one knows who built the castle or why, but it’s been here longer than Roakan has existed, and the monsters inside respawn no matter how many times they’re cleared."
Jake looked at the castle and felt the system pulse in the background of his awareness, responding to something about this place.
"This is dangerous," Raani said, turning to face him directly.
"Even for Class II, the recommended party size exists for a reason. If you go in alone—"
"I need to go alone," Jake said.
"If I’m going to face those clan of giants, I need to be the only variable. But I’ll be careful, and I’ll retreat if I need to."
Raani looked at him for a long moment, her face carrying all the concern and admiration and reluctant acceptance that had been building since the awakening.
"If you die in there," she said quietly, "I will never forgive you."
"Noted," Jake said.
He walked toward the castle gates, leaving Raani standing in the forest with Syrath behind her, and as he crossed the threshold into Sanctum, the system that had been quiet since the appraisal sphere buzzed to life with an urgency he hadn’t felt from it before.
[DUNGEON DETECTED: GHOUL SANCTUM]
Jake took a breath, let it out slowly, and stepped into the darkness of the castle’s entrance hall.
The doors closed behind him with a sound like finality.
*
The entrance hall of Sanctum stretched before Jake in darkness that the torches along the walls couldn’t fully penetrate, their flames burning with a sickly green light that threw shadows in directions that didn’t match the positions of the fire.
The castle’s interior smelled of old stone and something organic that had been rotting for a very long time, and when Jake took his first steps forward, the sound of his boots on the flagstones echoed in ways that suggested the space was larger than it appeared.
The system pulsed again, more insistently this time.
[DUNGEON ENVIRONMENT ANALYSIS COMPLETE]
[PRIMARY THREAT: GHOUL INFESTATION - CLASS C TO CLASS A VARIANTS]
[DUNGEON BOSS DETECTED: GHOUL KING - ESTIMATED CLASS S THREAT LEVEL]
[SERPENT KING ABILITIES OPTIMIZED FOR CURRENT ENVIRONMENT]
[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: SERPENT’S COMMAND]
[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: VENOMOUS STRIKE]
[NEW SKILL UNLOCKED: SCALE ARMOR]
Jake stopped walking and pulled up the full system interface, letting the screens materialize in his vision with their familiar translucent glow.
The new skills appeared in a section he hadn’t seen before, organized under a header that simply read "Serpent King - Bloodline Techniques."
[SERPENT’S COMMAND]: Exert dominance over snake creatures within range.
Effectiveness scales with the user’s power relative to the target.
Can be resisted by creatures of equal or greater strength.
Range: 50 meters at current level.
[VENOMOUS STRIKE]: Imbue attacks with serpent venom that causes paralysis and necrotic damage.
Venom potency increases with the user’s bloodline strength.
Duration: 30 seconds per activation.
Cooldown: 2 minutes.
[SCALE ARMOR]: Manifest serpent scales across the body for enhanced defense.
Scales absorb physical and magical damage up to a threshold determined by the user’s class and bloodline purity.
Duration: 5 minutes.
Cooldown: 10 minutes.
Jake read through the descriptions twice, committing them to memory, then dismissed the screens and continued forward into the castle’s depths. The entrance hall opened into a larger chamber where the ceiling rose into darkness above and multiple corridors branched off in different directions, and it was in this chamber that Jake encountered his first ghoul.
It came from one of the side corridors with the shambling, uncoordinated movement that ghouls used when they weren’t actively hunting, its body hunched and wrong-looking, limbs too long and bent at angles that human joints didn’t accommodate. Its skin was grey and stretched tight over prominent bones, and when it saw Jake, its head snapped toward him with sudden focus, and its mouth opened to reveal teeth that had been filed or grown into points.
The ghoul screamed and charged.
