Chapter 65: King’s will

Jake wanted to test something first and wanted to understand what the Serpent King title actually did before falling back on conventional combat.

He raised his right hand and pushed outward with his will, not physically but with the particular pressure he had felt from Karut on the road, the weight of presence and authority that came from bloodline power fully manifested.

[SERPENT’S COMMAND ACTIVATED]

The effect was immediate and dramatic.

The ghoul’s charge faltered mid-stride as though it had run into an invisible wall, its momentum dying, its body going rigid. Its head turned toward Jake with jerky, resisted movements, and its eyes—milky and unfocused—fixed on him with an expression that might have been fear if ghouls were capable of complex emotions.

Jake felt the connection establish itself between them, a thread of dominance that ran from his bloodline through the air to the creature’s corrupted essence, and he understood with sudden clarity that the ghoul recognized him as something that stood higher in whatever hierarchy governed predatory creatures.

There was also a reason that these ghouls were not stronger than him. It was the main reason his will worked against them.

"Kneel," Jake said, testing the limits of the command.

The ghoul’s legs buckled, and it went down hard on the stone floor, its arms splaying outward for balance, its head still turned toward Jake with that rigid, locked attention.

Jake walked toward it slowly, watching for any sign that the command was weakening or that the creature was resisting, but the ghoul remained frozen in its kneeling position until Jake was standing directly in front of it.

He reached down and placed his hand on its head, feeling the cold, clammy texture of its skin, and the ghoul didn’t move.

"Interesting," Jake murmured.

He withdrew his hand and stepped back, releasing the Serpent’s Command with a deliberate flexing of will. The ghoul staggered upright immediately and bolted back down the corridor it had emerged from, fleeing with the same shambling speed it had used to charge. The ghouls felt terrified of his presence and the immense aura radiating from him made them run away.

Jake let it go and moved deeper into the castle.

The next encounter came in a wider corridor where the green torches burned brighter and the ceiling was lower, creating a space that felt compressed and claustrophobic.

Three ghouls this time, emerging from a side chamber all at once, coordinating their approach with the pack intelligence that the more dangerous variants possessed.

Jake drew his sword and activated Venomous Strike as they closed the distance.

[VENOMOUS STRIKE ACTIVE - 30 SECONDS REMAINING]

The blade in his hand began to glow with a faint greenish light, the same color as the torches, and he could feel the venom gathering along the edge like liquid pressure waiting to be released. He moved to meet the ghouls rather than letting them surround him, his enhanced speed from the Class II awakening making him faster than he’d been a week ago, and his first strike caught the lead ghoul across the chest in a horizontal slash that opened it from shoulder to hip.

The venom worked instantly.

The ghoul’s forward momentum stopped as though someone had cut its strings, its muscles seizing, its body going rigid before it had time to register the pain of the wound.

Black fluid began seeping from the cut as the necrotic effect took hold, eating through tissue faster than the ghoul’s regeneration could compensate for, and the creature collapsed with a sound like wet cloth hitting stone.

The second ghoul came from Jake’s left, claws extended, aiming for his throat with the kind of single-minded aggression that ghouls used when they sensed wounded prey.

Jake pivoted and brought his sword up in a rising cut that took the creature’s arm off at the elbow, the venomous blade shearing through bone and flesh with enhanced ease, and the severed limb hit the ground still twitching while the ghoul staggered backward with its stump already blackening from the venom’s spread.

The third ghoul had more survival instinct than the first two. It saw both its companions disabled within seconds and retreated toward the side chamber, moving with the rapid, scrambling gait that ghouls use when they know they are outmatched.

Jake didn’t chase it.

He stood in the corridor and watched the two downed ghouls finish dying, noting how the venom continued spreading even after the initial wounds, how it consumed them from the inside until there was nothing left but blackened husks that the dungeon’s natural magic would eventually reclaim and respawn somewhere else.

[VENOMOUS STRIKE DURATION COMPLETE]

[COOLDOWN: 2 MINUTES]

The sword’s glow faded and Jake continued forward, leaving the husks behind.

The castle’s interior was a maze of corridors and chambers that seemed designed to confuse rather than function, staircases that led to nowhere, doors that opened into walls, and architecture that existed purely to create difficulty for anyone trying to navigate it.

Jake moved through it with careful attention to his surroundings, marking his path mentally, trusting the blood sense to warn him when ghouls were approaching from directions he couldn’t see.

The encounters came regularly as he descended deeper into the dungeon.

Small groups of two or three ghouls that he dispatched with sword and venom; occasional solo variants that were larger and stronger but still fell to coordinated strikes; and moments where he tested the Serpent’s Command on different types to see which ones it affected most strongly.

The command worked best on the lesser ghouls, the ones that were barely sentient and operated on pure hunting instinct. The larger variants resisted more, their corrupted intelligence providing enough self-awareness to push back against the dominance Jake was trying to impose, though none of them resisted completely.

Even the strongest ghouls he encountered showed hesitation when he activated the ability, a moment of uncertainty that he could exploit with his sword if the command alone wasn’t sufficient to stop them.

Jake reached a larger chamber after perhaps an hour of steady progress, a space with a vaulted ceiling and no visible exits beyond the corridor he’d entered through. The chamber was circular, maybe thirty meters across, with pillars arranged in a ring around the perimeter and something large moving in the shadows between them.

The blood-sense screamed a warning before Jake’s eyes registered what he was looking at.
