Chapter 73: Heading to the Capital

Two hours later, they finally arrived at the base at the outskirts of the City of Berm. The noise of the helicopter rotors drew the attention of every personnel in the base, and the maintenance crews immediately went to the helipad for its arrival.

The aircraft descended steadily.

Dust and loose gravel scattered across the ground as the rotors pushed air downward, the sound echoing across the compound. Personnel nearby paused what they were doing, some shielding their eyes, others simply watching.

For many of them, specifically those hired adventurers, this was still something new.

The helicopter touched down smoothly.

"Touchdown," the pilot confirmed.

Marcus unfastened his harness.

"Open it," he said.

The side door slid open, letting in the outside air along with the lingering sound of the rotors. One of the crew stepped out first, guiding the landing area while the others began routine checks.

Marcus stepped down next.

"Okay, we are here guys. So what’s the plan?"

"We are going to depart immediately to the Kingdom of Renshade, you’ll have to come with us to cash your reward," Seraphine said.

Marcus paused for a second after stepping down, glancing toward the main building.

"...Right," he said. "But I need to inform someone first."

Seraphine tilted her head slightly.

"...Someone?"

Marcus nodded.

"My girlfriend," he said plainly. "She’s in charge of administration here. I can’t just leave again without telling her."

Selene raised an eyebrow.

"...The one from earlier?"

"Yeah," Marcus replied.

Liora gave a small nod.

"...That makes sense."

Kael crossed his arms.

"...Make it quick," he said. "I don’t feel like waiting around all day."

Marcus smirked faintly.

"You’ll live," he said.

He turned slightly and gestured toward the headquarters.

"Come on," he added. "You can wait inside. Better than standing out here."

Seraphine nodded once.

"...Very well."

They moved together across the base.

As they walked, more personnel passed by, some stealing quick glances at the unfamiliar group. The Silver Vanguard didn’t go unnoticed.

Marcus pushed the door open and stepped inside.

The operations floor was active, but controlled.

Staff moved between tables, organizing documents, updating boards, handling reports.

And near the center—

Elaina.

She looked up the moment Marcus entered.

Her eyes locked onto him.

For a second, she didn’t move.

Then she walked straight toward him.

"...You’re back," she said.

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah," he replied. "Mission’s done."

She blinked her eyes.

"Wait, what do you mean the mission is done? You defeated the Red Dragon?"

"Yeah it was a team effort. Listen I have to go with them to the capital, Saint-Haven for the rewards. Looks like a representative or something. It’ll take days since the capital is far from here I believe."

"Yes, it takes about three days of travel. Which means you won’t be here for three days?"

"Don’t worry, I might have to suggest that we use another mode of transportation. Now, the helicopter won’t do so I’m thinking of a land vehicle. I’m going to need a 4x4 vehicle, something comfortable. I believe we have some in the inventory I listed."

"Yes I do remember," she said as she returned to her desk and then grabbed a paper. There, it contains a list of vehicles. "You can use the Osh–oshkosh? With you as the driver, and the four of them as passengers. Comfortability will be an issue since I saw their interiors."

"Looks like we are going to invest in a new vehicle soon," Marcus said.

"What do you mean?" she tilted her head to the side.

"You’ll learn soon enough," Marcus simply said. "So we have to depart immediately. I’ll be back once I get the reward, okay?"

"Okay."

Marcus leaned in for the kiss.

Elaina didn’t pull away this time.

She met him halfway, her hand lightly resting against his chest as their lips touched—brief, but enough.

When they pulled back, she looked at him for a second longer.

"...Don’t take too long," she said quietly.

Marcus gave a small nod.

"I won’t."

He straightened and headed back to others, and along the way, informed one of his summoned personnel to fetch him the JLTV Oshkosh.

"Slight change of plan. I believe you are going to use your carriage for transportation," Marcus said. "Look, I have another option that’s faster and more reliable."

Seraphine looked at him.

"...Another one?"

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah. Land transport," he said. "Doesn’t fly, but it moves faster than any carriage you’ve used."

Kael scoffed lightly.

"...As long as it gets us there."

Selene crossed her arms.

"...At this point, I’m just curious what else you have."

Liora gave a small nod.

"...Same."

Marcus led them out toward the vehicle bay.

A few moments later, one of his personnel arrived, driving the JLTV Oshkosh into position. The engine rumbled low and steady as it rolled to a stop in front of them.

The Silver Vanguard stared.

Selene stepped closer first.

"...This is the ’land transport’?" she asked.

Marcus nodded.

"Yeah."

Liora walked around it slowly.

"...It’s... built like armor."

Kael glanced at the thick frame and reinforced panels.

"...This thing can take a hit."

Marcus smirked faintly.

"That’s the point."

Seraphine studied it quietly, taking in the structure, the wheels, the overall design.

"...And this moves fast?" she asked.

"Fast enough," Marcus replied.

He moved to the driver’s side and opened the door.

"Get in. I’ll show you."

Selene climbed in first again, curiosity getting the better of her hesitation.

"...It’s bigger inside than I expected."

Liora helped Kael in, guiding him carefully.

"...Sit still," she said.

"I am," Kael muttered.

Seraphine entered last, taking her seat with the same calm posture as before.

Marcus got in and started the engine.

The vehicle hummed to life.

He glanced once toward the headquarters.

Elaina was still standing there, watching.

Marcus gave a small nod.

Then faced forward.

"Alright," he said. "It would take us within a day to get there. So rest and easy and just tell me where to go."

He shifted gears.

The vehicle rolled forward, leaving the base behind.
