Chapter 78: Finally!

Three days later, at the capital city of the Kingdom of Renshade. Marcus was staying in his hotel, waiting for the bank transaction to push through.

The guildmaster Arcturus told them that it’ll only take a day for the transaction to process. But it has been three days now and it hasn’t pushed through yet.

He wanted it received at the agreed-upon date so that he could return back to Berm and be with Elaina, and expand their current arsenals.

A knock on the door interrupted his train of thoughts.

"Breakfast for Sir Marcus Manfred," said the housekeeper from behind the door.

Marcus turned and walked over towards the door. "Coming."

He reached for the doorknob and opened the door. There, he saw the same housekeeper who delivered him breakfast on his first day.

"Here sir, we have bread and butter, eggs, and tea," the housekeeper said, gently pushing the cart inside.

Marcus stepped aside.

"Thanks. Just leave it there."

She nodded and rolled the cart toward the small table near the window. Everything was neatly arranged—simple, but clean.

"Will there be anything else, sir?" she asked.

Marcus shook his head.

"No, that’s all."

She gave a small bow and left, closing the door quietly behind her.

Marcus walked back and looked at the food for a second.

Then he sighed.

"...At least something here works on time."

He sat down and grabbed a piece of bread, taking a bite without much thought.

His mind was still on the same thing.

Three days.

Arcturus said one.

Marcus leaned back slightly, staring at the table.

Later, he’d go to the bank and check it himself.

No more waiting for letters.

No more trusting timelines.

He finished the rest of the bread in silence, then stood up and grabbed his coat.

"Let’s just get this over with," he muttered.

A few minutes later, he stepped out of the hotel and into the streets of the capital.

The morning crowd had already filled the roads.

Merchants opening shops, carriages moving at a steady pace. It was a very normal morning in the city of Saint-haven.

The bank wasn’t hard to find. It’s one of the largest and tallest and most beautiful buildings in the city. And moments later, he found it. He approached it and entered through the door after being frisked by the guards.

Inside, he was the first customer as there seemed to be no other customers other than him. So he proceeded to one of the clerks behind the desk and when they saw him approached, they smiled pleasingly.

"I’m here to confirm if there is a balance change in my account," Marcus said politely. "The account name is Marcus Manfred, registered from the city of Berm. Identification is right here."

He slid his adventurer’s guild card across the desk.

The clerk picked it up and examined it carefully, eyes scanning the engraved name and rank. Then he gave a small nod.

"Thank you, sir. One moment."

He turned to the large ledger behind him, pulling it closer. Pages flipped one after another, neat handwriting filling each line. His finger ran across entries until it stopped.

"Marcus Manfred," he repeated quietly.

Then he reached for another document beside it, cross-checking details.

Marcus waited.

But his eyes stayed on the clerk.

"Registered from Berm," the clerk added, confirming it.

Marcus nodded once.

"That’s right."

The clerk paused for a second longer.

Then his expression shifted slightly.

"Ah," he said.

Marcus raised an eyebrow.

"What?"

The clerk looked back at him.

"The transaction has been completed," he said. "It was processed earlier this morning."

Marcus didn’t respond immediately.

"And?"

The clerk turned the ledger slightly, just enough for Marcus to see the line.

"The current balance reflects an additional thirty million kinah," he said.

Marcus looked at it and there it was, the debited thirty million kinah. Finally, it has arrived! The contracts are now complete with this and with that amount of money, he could seriously purchase additional equipment as he knew the Red Dragon won’t be just a huge monster he’ll encounter. There’d be more.

"Thank you, I just came here to check for that," Marcus said.

"I’m glad that it satisfies you, Sir Marcus. Would you like to have another transaction? Like withdrawal or transfer of balance?"

Marcus shook his head.

"No," he said. "I’ll leave it there for now."

The clerk nodded, still polite.

"Very well, sir. If you need any assistance in the future, feel free to return."

Marcus gave a small nod.

"Yeah. Thanks."

He took his guild card back and slipped it into his pocket. He stepped away from the reception desk and left the bank.

Now that he has the money, he’d check if the others receive it. Surely, there are still at the hotel.

"Better to get there back," Marcus thought to himself and then walked towards the hotel which is just a walking distance.

He arrived at the hotel and there at the receptionist, he saw Seraphine, Kael, Liora, and Selene and they had their belongings with them in luggage.

"Seraphine?" Marcus called and Seraphine turned.

"Oh Marcus, we were just looking for you," Seraphine said, approaching him. The others followed behind.

"Where did you go?"

"I went to the bank," Marcus answered and added. "Just to check if they transferred the money. It’s now in my account. So I believe I have concluded my services to you, Silver Vanguards."

"That’s good to hear. But that is only the base pay, you haven’t received the money from the Kingdom of Felsis and for the Red Dragon parts. We are heading to Merchant Kelly’s office to discuss the terms. Do you want to come?"

Marcus pondered for a moment, whether to come or not. He’d want to know how much value the Red Dragon holds in its body. He knew the scales can be turned into armor and weapons and it’s a high-ranking monster so it’ll yield high quality materials and equipment. If he won’t come, they might collude to one another to downplay the value and settle for less than what he could actually get.

Marcus exhaled quietly.

He didn’t like that thought.

Not because he distrusted them.

Seraphine didn’t strike him as someone who would do that.

None of them did, to be honest. Like, they are high-ranking adventurers, so for sure they are loaded. But still, money had a way of changing things. And this wasn’t a small amount.

Red Dragon materials alone could be worth more than the base reward.

Way more.

He looked at Seraphine.

"Merchant Kelly?" he asked.

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes," she said. "He handles high-value materials. Especially dragon-related ones. Also, one of the richest merchants in the whole of Renshade. His trading company handles most of the large-scale transactions coming in and out of the capital," Seraphine continued.

Selene added with a small shrug,

"If it’s expensive, it goes through him one way or another."

Kael let out a quiet scoff.

"And he takes a cut."

"Of course he does," Selene replied. "That’s how he stays rich."

Liora glanced at Marcus.

"But he’s reliable," she said. "People don’t go to him unless they trust the valuation."

Marcus nodded slowly.

That made sense.

High-value goods needed someone credible.

Still, he wasn’t the type to just take someone’s word for it.

"Alright," he said. "Let’s go see him."

Seraphine turned immediately. 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢

"Then we move."

They stepped out of the hotel together, heading deeper into the capital once more.

This time, the path wasn’t toward the guild.

It was toward the commercial district.

The shift was noticeable. It has less noise, more guards, and more expensive storefronts.

Buildings with reinforced doors, polished signage, and private guards stationed outside.

Marcus took it all in as they walked.

"This is where the real money moves," he muttered.

Selene glanced at him.

"Exactly."

They stopped in front of a large building.

Not as flashy as the hotel.

Two guards stood at the entrance, both armed and alert.

Seraphine stepped forward first.

"We’re here to see Merchant Kelly," she said.

The guards exchanged a glance.

Then one of them nodded.

"...He’s expecting you."

That alone made Marcus raise an eyebrow slightly.

"...Of course he is," he muttered.

The doors opened. And inside, he could really tell that the Merchant is loaded with expensive furniture, gilded walls, and large paintings. Even the ambiance looked so high-class. Though it is indeed a high-class office.

A man stood at the far end of the room, he was well-dressed, groomed, and wore a black top hat.

"Silver Vanguard," he said smoothly. "Welcome to my office, my name is Kelly. I have been expecting your arrival."

"Mr. Kelly, a pleasure," Seraphine said with a slight bow and then introduced the others. "As always, my party."

"Yeah, I know their names but what about this one?" Kelly said, looking at Marcus.

"That’s Marcus Manfred. He is officially a part of our party during the quest of subjugation of Red Dragon but now that he has done his part, we’ll part ways the moment he receives his fair share."

"Oh I see," Kelly smiled. "Welcome Mr. Marcus Manfred."

"Likewise," Marcus simply replied back.

"So, shall we start discussing business?"
