Chapter 77: Getting That Reward

The guildmaster blinked once.

And then again.

"What the hell?" he repeated, this time slower, like he was trying to process what he just heard.

He leaned back slightly in his chair, eyes shifting between Seraphine, Selene, and Kael—who had just stepped in behind Marcus, still looking half-rested but far from fresh.

"...No," the guildmaster said, shaking his head once. "That’s not possible."

The room fell quiet.

Not tense.

Just... confused.

Seraphine didn’t react.

"It is," she said simply.

The guildmaster leaned forward this time, resting both hands on the table.

"...The Red Dragon subjugation was classified as a government-mandated S-level threat," he said. "Even with your party involved, the expected completion time was at least several days... with potential casualties."

His eyes narrowed slightly.

"And you’re telling me you finished it overnight?"

Selene crossed her arms.

"We didn’t take a break," she said.

"That’s not the point," the guildmaster replied quickly. "You don’t just ’rush’ a Red Dragon and come back alive."

His gaze shifted to Kael.

"You look injured."

Kael scoffed lightly.

"Got hit," he said. "Didn’t die."

"That’s not reassuring," the guildmaster muttered.

Then his eyes returned to Seraphine.

"Explain."

Seraphine didn’t speak right away.

Instead, she stepped slightly to the side. And pointed to Marcus.

"He was the one who delivered the killing blow," she said.

Silence.

The guildmaster’s eyes followed her gesture.

And landed on Marcus.

There was a pause.

A long one.

"...Him?" the guildmaster said.

Marcus didn’t react.

He just stood there, hands relaxed at his sides.

"...Yes," Seraphine confirmed.

Selene added casually,

"We weakened it. He finished it."

Kael let out a quiet breath.

"...That’s one way to put it."

The guildmaster leaned back again, studying Marcus more carefully this time.

"...You’re the one," he said slowly, "the one they were planning to recruit."

Marcus raised an eyebrow slightly.

"...Guess so."

Seraphine nodded.

"Yes," she said. "We approached him due to his prior combat record against wyverns."

The guildmaster exhaled.

"...Wyverns," he repeated. "That was already surprising enough."

His gaze sharpened.

"...But a Red Dragon?"

He stood up this time.

And stepped around his desk.

The distance between him and Marcus closed.

"...State your name," he said.

"Marcus," he replied. "Marcus Manfred."

The guildmaster gave a small nod.

"...I am Guildmaster Arcturus Vale."

He didn’t extend a hand.

Not yet.

He just kept looking.

"...I’ll be honest with you, Marcus Manfred," Arcturus said. "I find this hard to believe."

Marcus shrugged slightly.

"Fair."

Arcturus frowned.

"...You don’t even try to argue?"

Marcus shook his head.

"You asked for the truth," he said. "That’s it."

The guildmaster narrowed his eyes.

"...A B-rank adventurer," he continued, "outperforming the Silver Vanguard... and delivering the final blow on a Red Dragon."

He took another step closer.

"...Explain that."

Marcus met his gaze.

"Contract," he said.

Arcturus blinked.

"...What?"

"I didn’t fight as an adventurer," Marcus said. "I fought under a contract."

Selene smirked faintly.

"...Here we go."

Seraphine remained silent.

Arcturus frowned deeper.

"...Contract with what?"

Marcus answered without hesitation.

"Atlas."

The name hung in the air.

Arcturus repeated it slowly.

"...Atlas."

Then he looked at Seraphine.

"...You signed a contract with him?"

"Yes," she said.

"Why?" Arcturus asked.

Seraphine didn’t hesitate.

"Because he had the capability to deal with aerial threats at a level we couldn’t guarantee."

Arcturus let out a quiet breath.

"...So you trusted an unknown B-rank over your own strength."

"No," Seraphine corrected. "We supplemented it."

A pause.

Then Arcturus turned back to Marcus.

"...What is Atlas?"

Marcus didn’t look away.

"It’s a private military company," he said.

The words didn’t land immediately.

But when they did, Arcturus’s expression shifted.

"Military," he repeated.

"Yes."

"...Company?"

Marcus nodded.

"I provide combat support under contract," he said. "Different structure. Same goal."

Arcturus studied him again.

Longer this time.

"...And the method?" he asked. "What did you use?"

Marcus gave a small shrug.

"Tools."

Selene let out a quiet laugh.

"That’s putting it lightly."

Kael shook his head slightly.

"...He dropped fire from the sky," he muttered.

Arcturus’s gaze snapped back to Marcus.

"...Fire from the sky?"

Marcus didn’t elaborate.

He didn’t need to.

The silence that followed said enough.

Arcturus exhaled slowly.

Then walked back to his desk.

"...I don’t like things I can’t understand," he said.

Marcus nodded.

"Most people don’t."

Arcturus reached for a document.

"...But results are results," he continued. "And the Silver Vanguard does not lie."

He signed something.

Stamped it.

Then looked back at Marcus.

"...Marcus Manfred."

Marcus didn’t move.

"...I will remember that name."

Selene smirked.

"...You should."

Arcturus ignored her.

"The contract is considered fulfilled," he said. "The reward will be processed immediately."

Arcturus set the stamped document aside and pulled open a drawer from his desk.

"...Before anything is released," he said, more composed now, "we follow procedure."

Selene sighed lightly.

"...Of course we do."

Kael leaned against the wall.

"...Just give me the money already."

"That’s exactly why we don’t skip procedure," Arcturus replied without looking at him.

He took out several sheets of paper, neatly prepared, along with a small ink set and quills.

"These are your mission statements," he said, placing them on the desk. "Each of you will document your account of the subjugation. Timeline, engagement details, damage sustained, and final outcome."

Marcus glanced at the papers.

"You need all that?"

Arcturus looked at him.

"Yes," he said. "Government contract. High-risk classification. This goes into record."

Selene stepped forward first, already reaching for one of the papers.

"Fine," she muttered. "Let’s get this over with."

She pulled a chair and sat down, dipping the quill into ink without hesitation.

Liora followed more quietly, taking her own sheet and sitting beside Selene.

"I’ll try to be as accurate as I can," she said softly.

Kael stared at the paper for a second.

"You want me to write?"

Arcturus raised an eyebrow.

"You can speak it if writing is too difficult," he said. "I’ll have it transcribed."

Kael clicked his tongue.

"I’ll write."

He grabbed the quill a bit rougher than needed and dropped into a seat.

Seraphine remained standing for a moment, reading through the format.

"Understood," she said, then took her place as well.

Marcus stayed where he was.

Watching.

"So I do this too?" he asked.

Arcturus nodded.

"Yes," he said. "Especially you."

Marcus let out a quiet breath.

"Alright."

He stepped forward and took the last sheet.

The room shifted into a different kind of quiet.

No longer tense.

No longer questioning.

Just the scratch of quills against paper.

Selene spoke first while writing.

"Opening engagement. Dragon airborne. Aggressive behavior. Fire spread across multiple districts..."

She wrote fast.

Confident.

Like she had done this many times before.

Liora paused occasionally, thinking before putting anything down.

"...Support role... healing output sustained... Kael took direct impact..."

She glanced at Kael briefly.

"...Idiot."

Kael didn’t respond.

He was focused.

"...Direct engagement... failed penetration on initial strikes..."

He paused.

Then added. "...Target durability higher than expected."

Seraphine’s writing was clean.

"Coordinated ranged assault... forced descent... damage insufficient..."

Marcus looked at his paper for a moment.

Then started writing.

"Engagement observed from distance. Target movement pattern analyzed..."

He paused.

"Deployed anti-armor solution. Three shots. Target neutralized."

Selene glanced at him.

"That’s it?"

Marcus shrugged.

"That’s what happened."

She rolled her eyes.

"You’re unbelievable."

One by one, they finished.

Seraphine was the first to stand, placing her paper neatly back on the desk.

"Done."

Selene followed right after.

"Same."

Liora placed hers more gently.

"I hope that’s enough..."

Kael dropped his paper with less care.

"There."

Marcus stepped forward last and handed his over.

"That’s mine."

Arcturus gathered them all.

He didn’t speak.

He just read.

One by one.

His eyes moved across each page with a scrutinizing look.

Occasionally, he paused.

Re-reading certain lines.

Comparing details.

The room stayed quiet.

No one rushed him.

After a while, he set the papers down.

"Consistent," he said.

Selene crossed her arms.

"Told you."

Arcturus ignored that and reached into another drawer.

This time, he pulled out a small chest.

He placed it on the table and unlocked it with a key from his coat.

A soft click.

Then he opened it.

Inside, was a parchment of a cheque.

"One hundred fifty million kinah," he said. "As stated in the contract."

Kael’s eyes flicked toward it.

"Finally."

"You’ll get this by tomorrow since this is a huge amount of money, it’ll be transferred directly to your bank. You guys have thirty million each. But of course, it won’t end there as the Kingdom of Felsis would add a reward for killing the dragon that decimated their country."

"No problem for me," Marcus said. "So long that the money reached my account, we won’t have any problem. And guildmaster, if I may, if you have a similar high-risk quest similar to defeating a Red Dragon, please, refer them to Atlas. As we are capable of doing anything."

"Oh, you’ll hear it in the news boy," Arcturus said with a smile.
