Chapter 981: Chapter 981: Pleasing Others

After that, Richard Sheffield disappeared from Vanessa Sterling’s life, but Vanessa still hadn’t completely moved on from the relationship.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t let go of Richard Sheffield, but rather she had started to doubt herself and her own confidence.

Sometimes she wondered if she really deserved to pursue happiness.

But her heart would feel aggrieved; the unfortunate experiences weren’t her fault...

Once Laura Yates learned of Vanessa Sterling’s breakup with Richard Sheffield, she came by to ask the reason. Vanessa didn’t badmouth Richard in front of Laura, simply brushed it off with saying they weren’t suitable for each other.

Laura didn’t delve much into right or wrong, she just comforted Vanessa Sterling by saying, "Actually, having the courage to try is great. It’s perfectly okay to break up if you’re not compatible. There’s no need to rush in matters of the heart; you’ll meet someone more suitable in the future."

Vanessa just smiled without saying much, but deep down she felt that she probably wouldn’t try again.

Her understanding of love was quite vague. Just like when she was with Richard Sheffield, she couldn’t figure out if she was with him because she liked him, or if she was trying hard to be someone he liked due to being together.

To be honest, those days with Richard Sheffield were indeed happy, but she wasn’t really at ease.

She was always cautious, afraid that her actions might cause Richard Sheffield’s displeasure or dislike.

When together, she cared more about whether Richard Sheffield was happy than her own comfort and happiness.

Constantly pleasing him, fearing being hated, but in the end, it led to this result...

So she doesn’t want to work so hard to please others anymore, being alone feels lighter and freer.

Coming to terms with this, Vanessa Sterling’s life soon returned to normal.

She did what she liked without worrying about social interactions that felt cumbersome to her. When hungry, she’d order her favorite takeout; tired, she’d lie down on the sofa for a while; when her mind was blank, she’d turn on the TV, hugging a bag of chips and watch her favorite dramas.

Miles Sterling observed the monitoring footage from the past few days, never seeing Vanessa leave the house, but frequently seeing deliverymen pass by.

He didn’t realize Vanessa was a homebody before, mistakingly thinking she hadn’t gotten over the breakup, feeling quite worried but unsure how to comfort her.

Frustrated, he spent ages in his room, flipping through his phone, anxiously trying to find a way to cheer Vanessa up.

...

At sundown, Vanessa Sterling fell asleep on the sofa watching TV.

Sleep was abruptly interrupted by the doorbell ringing.

She immediately got up and went to the door, seeing the deliveryman standing outside, while bewilderedly recalling she hadn’t ordered food.

Puzzled, she opened the door to see the delivery guy holding a large bouquet of pink roses, smiling broadly, saying, "Your delivery is here, please sign for it!"

"...Was it delivered to the wrong place? I didn’t order this."

The delivery guy checked the order slip, then looked at the house number, confirming, "The address is correct, you’re Vanessa, right?"

Upon hearing her name, Vanessa was even more puzzled, "Who sent it?"

"I don’t know, but there’s a card inside."

Vanessa reached out to take the flowers and pulled out the card.

"Wishing you a pleasant life!"

The delivery guy turned and left, while Vanessa stood at the door perplexed for a moment before closing the door and returning inside.

The card simply had four plain words - "Be happy every day."

There was no indication of who sent it, yet the delivery slip undeniably had her home’s address and her name.

Vanessa looked over towards the next room, wondering if Miles was up to something again?
