Chapter 211: The Ebon Star

The team moved cautiously through the underground prison, their footsteps echoing in the damp, heavy silence. The cells stretched into the darkness, their rusted bars groaning softly as if stirred by an unseen breath.

Sarah’s eyes darted across the shadows, her voice low. "This place is huge... How many prisoners were kept here?"

Lisa’s gaze lingered on a cluster of shapes near the far wall. "Look... over there."

The Ki light pushed back the darkness, revealing a pile of bones—skulls and scattered remains, their surfaces stained with age. Some were still clad in tattered remnants of armor, others lay bare, picked clean by time.

Sarah’s hand flew to her mouth, her face going pale. "That’s... a lot of bones."

Lisa stepped back, her voice trembling slightly. "Were they heroes? Or prisoners...?"

Sein let out a dry laugh, though her eyes remained sharp. "What, afraid of a few old bones? They’re not going to bite you."

Sarah shot her a glare. "That’s not funny, Sein."

Andrey crouched beside a pile of bones, studying them. "These aren’t recent. They’ve been here for years—maybe decades. But the way they’re arranged suggests they were dragged here, not killed in battle." He stood, his gaze tracking the dark hallway ahead.

Hope stepped forward, her greatsword held low. "This place feels wrong. The air is too still—like something is watching us."

Lisa nodded slowly, her hands glowing faintly. "I can feel something too... contamination. The mana here is thick and stagnant, like it’s been poisoned from within."

The System window appeared.

System: Warning! Laplace Soul Fragment detected nearby. Proceed with extreme caution. The fragment appears to be embedded within a powerful corrupted entity. Eliminate the host to retrieve the fragment.

Andrey’s hand moved to his staff. "Everyone, ready your weapons."

The moment the words left his mouth, the shadows around them began to shift. From the walls, the ceiling, the cracks in the floor—dark, tentacle-like shapes emerged, writhing and pulsing with a slick, jelly-like sheen. They were black as oil, glistening in the dim light, moving with an unnatural fluidity.

Lisa’s hands shot forward. "Aegis of Dawn!"

A shimmering mint-green dome expanded around the team just as a tentacle lashed toward them. The barrier held, the tentacle rebounding with a wet, sizzling sound.

The tentacles began to thicken, twisting together into a massive, bulbous shape. It rose from the darkness, black and glistening, its body rippling like living tar. A crown of star-like protrusions adorned its head, each one pulsing with a faint, malevolent light. In the center of its torso, a faint, pulsing glow could be seen—the Laplace fragment embedded deep within its core.

The creature let out a sound that was not quite a roar, not quite a hiss, but something in between—a deep, resonant hum that vibrated through the stone floor.

Sarah’s wand blazed. "Heartstorm Apocalypse!" A torrent of pink hearts slammed into the creature, and it recoiled. Where the light struck, the Ebon Star cracked and sizzled, black ichor dripping from the wounds.

Sein launched forward, flames roaring. "Crimson Cataclysm!" A wave of fire erupted over the creature, burning through its outer layers. It shrieked, a sound like grinding metal, and lashed out with multiple tentacles.

Hope intercepted them with a wide sweep of her greatsword. "Radiant Judgment!" Golden energy carved through two tentacles, severing them cleanly.

The Ebon Star let out a deafening, grinding shriek as it reared back, its crown of star-like protrusions blazing with violent light. A shockwave of raw, concentrated dark energy erupted from its core, expanding outward in a violent pulse.

"Aegis of Dawn—!" Lisa’s barrier flared to life, but the moment the dark wave struck, the mint-green dome cracked and shattered like glass. Lisa was thrown backward, crashing into a rusted cell door with a sharp gasp.

"Lisa!" Sarah’s voice was sharp with alarm as she rushed to her side.

The Ebon Star didn’t pause. Its tentacles lashed out again, faster and more aggressive than before. Sein met them head-on, flames roaring, but the tentacles were tougher now, their surfaces coated in a slick, pulsating dark energy that seemed to absorb her fire.

"Crimson Impact!" Her fist slammed into a tentacle, but instead of burning through, the flames flickered and died against its surface. "Tch—it’s adapting!"

Hope moved in from the side, her greatsword carving through two tentacles in quick succession. "Radiant Judgment!" Golden light blazed along her blade, and for a moment, the creature recoiled. But the wounds sealed almost instantly, dark ichor bubbling and hardening into new layers of corrupted flesh.

Andrey’s eyes narrowed. ’It’s healing faster than before. The Laplace fragment is amplifying its regeneration. We need to hit the core directly, but getting close is nearly impossible with those tentacles constantly attacking.’

The Ebon Star let out another shriek, and from its body, dozens of smaller, shadowy tendrils shot outward, aiming to ensnare the team. Sarah was forced to retreat, firing Pink Rain to keep them at bay, but the tendrils kept coming.

Hope was relentless. She ducked under a sweeping tentacle, rolled, and came up swinging, her blade carving a deep gash across the creature’s side. "Lisa! Can you still fight?!"

Lisa pushed herself up, her hands glowing with renewed energy. "I’m fine! I’ll keep the barrier up—just give me a moment!"

Sein was already moving again, flames roaring around her fists. "Crimson Cataclysm!" A wave of fire washed over the Ebon Star, but the creature simply absorbed it, its body glowing brighter as it fed on the heat.

"It’s absorbing our attacks!" Sein shouted, retreating as another tentacle slammed into the ground where she had been standing.

Andrey analyzed the situation. ’The Laplace fragment is definitely the key. It’s using the dark energy to fuel its regeneration and adapt to our attacks.’

He stepped forward, his staff glowing. "Everyone, focus your attacks on the core! Ignore the tentacles—I’ll draw them away!"

Before anyone could protest, Andrey activated Phantom Step, appearing directly in front of the Ebon Star’s main body. He channeled Ki into his staff and swung, striking the creature’s torso.

The Ebon Star shrieked and turned its attention fully toward him, its tentacles converging.
