Chapter 92: The List (1)
Bram took out the list the next morning.
It wasn’t paper — it was the translucent version of paper, the same ghostly kind as his equipment and his backpack.
"There are conditions," he said.
Kai looked at the list.
"How many?"
"Five."
"All necessary?"
"All of them."
Kai looked at Serah.
Looked at Lira.
"Read them."
---
Bram read them.
The first condition — that someone tell the truth to the person he had promised to return to — landed in the silence of simple things that carry weight.
"Who is she?" said Kai.
"The owner of the tavern in the next village." Bram folded the list. "Her name is Mira. She’s been two months without knowing what happened."
"How long were you two together?"
"Years." Bram looked at the remains of the previous night’s fire. "We never said it out loud. But we both knew."
No one answered.
"Someone has to go and tell her the truth." Bram looked at the three of them. "That I didn’t come back. That it wasn’t because I didn’t want to."
"We’ll do it," said Kai.
Bram nodded.
"The other four are different."

The other four were different.
Bram read them with the tone of someone who knew they were ridiculous and had made peace with it.
First — that someone eat the stew from Mira’s tavern and say out loud that it was the best they’d ever tasted. Bram had cooked it for years and no one had ever acknowledged it.
Second — that someone beat old Maren at cards in the north sector. Bram had tried for twenty years and never could.
Third — that someone dance the traditional dance of the south sector in the Valdris market. Bram had always wanted to but was too embarrassed.
Fourth — that someone tell Mira that he thought about her.
Silence.
"I’ll eat the stew," said Kai.
"I’ll do the card game," said Lira, quickly, like someone who had evaluated her options and chosen the one that suited her best.
Serah looked at Kai.
Kai looked at Serah.
Both looked at the third condition.
"The dance requires two people," said Bram.
"I see that," said Kai.

They went to the next village first.
Mira’s tavern was made of north‑sector stone, wooden tables that had been repaired so many times that the original and the fix were indistinguishable, the specific smell of food cooked in the same space for years.
Mira was fifty years old with her gray hair pulled back. Hands that had worked a lot. The eyes of someone who had been waiting for two months for something she knew wasn’t coming but hadn’t yet accepted it.
She watched them enter.
"Can I help you?"
Kai approached the counter.
Bram, from behind, invisible, said: "Tell her I’m Bram. That someone from the Valdris guild sent me."
Kai said it.
Mira put down the glass she was wiping on the counter.
---
The conversation was short.
Not because there was little to say.
Kai told her that Bram hadn’t returned from the east‑sector mission. That it had been quick. That it wasn’t because he didn’t want to come back.
Mira listened.
She didn’t say anything while Kai spoke.
When Kai finished, Mira put her hands on the counter and looked at the space behind Kai — the space where Bram stood, invisible to her.
"Is he here?"
Kai looked at Bram.
"Yes."
Mira nodded slowly.
"Good."
She was quiet for a moment.
"Good that someone tells me."

---
Then she served the stew.
Without anyone asking — she served it, set it in front of Kai, and went back to wiping the counter because her hands needed something to do.
Kai looked at it.
Bram, from behind, said: "It’s mine. I left her the recipe."
Kai picked up the spoon.
He tasted it.
It was mediocre — not bad, not good.
Kai looked at the plate.
Looked at Mira with her back turned, wiping the counter.
Looked at invisible Bram beside him.
"It’s the best stew I’ve ever tasted," Kai said, out loud and with the conviction of someone who meant it.
Mira stopped.
She turned.
Kai looked her straight in the eye.
"Really."
Mira looked at him for a moment.
Then she covered her face with her hands.
---
Kai looked at Serah.
Serah looked at him.
They both looked at Lira.
Lira looked at the ceiling.
Kai looked at his own hands.
---

The handkerchiefs materialized on the table.
Kai looked at them.
He took one.
He placed it in front of Mira with un‑dramatic delicacy, his attention focused on doing it correctly.
Mira took it.
Bram, from behind, said something very quietly that only Kai heard.
Kai said it out loud.
Mira nodded once — the same nod as before, the one that carried a lot inside.
