Silence.

Hinata stared at him. Beside her, Neji stared at him. At the head of the table, her father’s jaw had come open slightly, which on Hyuuga Hiashi was approximately equivalent to anyone else falling off their chair.

Her father knew far more of it than either of them. He’d been active during the war, had seen the Yondaime use it firsthand. She and Neji only had academy history classes and what he’d told them over breakfast to go on.

Even so, just hearing the description of it was enough to grasp how extraordinary the Flying Thunder God was. The name alone gave most of it away.

So she understood well enough why her usually immovable father sputtered, "Hokage-sama, you would truly just...teach Hanabi that jutsu? And decide it so casually?"

Daiki had a particular sparkle in his eyes that she had learned from experience meant he was very pleased with the reaction he’d gotten. He did love baiting them out of people.

"Obviously," he said, "Hanabi’s my adorable apprentice. My shoulder loli of doom."

"I’m not a loli." Hanabi grumbled, puffing her chest out.

Daiki glanced at her chest and snorted, which made her pout deeper, and continued without missing a beat, "I’ll teach her whatever she wants to learn." He shrugged, "Can’t have her coming out like all those other Hokage student scrubs now can I."

Her father blinked, some of the bewilderment still plain on his face, "Scrubs?" It would take him a while to adjust to Daiki’s manner of speaking she knew. It had taken her a while too, and he hadn’t even been Hokage back then, "Do you mean...the Sannin? And Hatake Kakashi?" Hiashi paused, seeming to weigh his next words carefully, "Forgive me Hokage-sama. I have seen your strength with my own eyes and I do not doubt it. But Kakashi is no weakling, there is no one in the Hyuuga clan that approaches his level. And the Sannin are, or were at least in Orochimaru’s case, well above even him."

Kakashi was Naruto-kun’s sensei wasn’t he? She hadn’t known he was that powerful. It must have stung her father’s pride considerably to admit no one in the Hyuuga clan came close to him.

Daiki scoffed, "A bunch of useless bums," he said, rolling his eyes, "Putting the filthy snake traitor aside. Tsunade wasted away for two decades. Jiraiya spent all his time chasing after said filthy snake traitor when he had far bigger responsibilities he should have been focused on. And Kakashi?" The disappointment in Daiki’s tone was tone was completely genuine, and she caught it only because of how much time she’d spent around him by now, "Chunin at six, Jonin at thirteen, with the potential to rival the Yondaime himself. And what did that amount to? Barely toeing the line of S-class, because he spent a decade letting everything go to waste wallowing in grief after his teammates and sensei died."

Her father seemed to flounder slightly, which was its own remarkable thing to witness, "Well...you are not wrong Hokage-sama. Though there is a bit more to it than just that."

"You’re right," Daiki agreed easily, "But that’s the brass tacks of it isn’t it." He shrugged, the arm still looped around Hanabi shifting as he did, "Either way. I won’t have Hanabi settling for the level of a mere Sannin. She’s too good for that." He said it as if it were fact, as if his word was law onto the world itself, "By the time Hanabi’s eighteen, she’ll have surpassed the Yondaime. I guarantee it."

Hanabi went very still, her eyes widening as she glanced back at her teacher.

Neji’s brow climbed slowly toward his hairline.

Her father opened his mouth, closed it, and then opened it again, "...Hokage-sama." he said, very carefully, "The Yondaime Hokage is widely considered to be the most powerful Hokage in the village’s history, barring perhaps the Shodai himself."

"Mhm." Daiki said pleasantly.

"Hanabi is eleven years old."

"She is." he agreed.

Her father stared at him for a long moment, "...You are completely serious aren’t you?" her asked, a palpable excitement in his voice and his chest inflating with pride.

Daiki just grinned at him.

Before cocking his head to the side, "Well, one correction there Hiashi. Neither the Shodai or the Yondaime are the most powerful Hokage in this village’s history," He grinned, "I am."

He had claimed that during his speech hadn’t he. And honestly, Hinata had no reference to refute it. Just remembering what she’d seen of his battle with Orochimaru through a screen was enough.

"I could not say either way Hokage-sama," her father replied, carefully, "I have never seen either of their full strength firsthand."

"That’s fine, I’m well aware of how powerful they both were at their peak." Daiki waved him off, "I know how strong all the Hokage were. And even if all four that came before me fought me together, I’d win."

None of them had quite found a response to that yet when he dropped his palm onto Hanabi’s head and ruffled her hair thoroughly, "Now then, I’ve got a big ol’ cloud monkey to go put in his place, so I’ll catch you guys later."

There was a flash of black.

And then he was gone, like a whirlwind that had passed through and left everything displaced in its wake. Daiki-kun truly was like a force of nature at times.

Hinata blinked at the empty space behind her sister, while Hanabi was grinning ear to ear, her thoroughly ruffled hair sticking up at odd angles, not bothering to fix it.

She stared blankly at the empty spot for a moment, until she remembered something, ’Ah. I forgot to ask who left that mark on his neck.’ Hinata thought, clicking her tongue in annoyance.

Her father sat very still at the head of the table, looking at the spot where the Hokage had been standing a moment ago, before ever so slowly he lowered his face to the table and released a deep shuddering breath from his nose.

Truly her fathers emotional control was impeccable.
