The sky burned with a brilliant red hue as a team of Gifteds made their way across a crumbling overpass.
The arable landscape around them had been reduced to a hellish landscape of charred rubble.
The air was thick with the acrid stench of burning flesh and sulfur, making every breath laborious for those not strong enough.
~BOOOMMMMMMM!~
A large hailstone landed close to the team.
It was a close one.
It would have plopped on the team but it had been deflected at the last minute by watchers on the fringes.
The First Woe was upon them strongly.
Walking in front of the team, Lyra Malkova shuddered as she took in the destruction.
She had seen a lot in her life but what she had witnessed in the space of a day was nothing more than disturbing.
"A third of the land will be burned up over the course of a week through hails of fire mixed with blood," She muttered the First Woe message as she walked on.
What she now saw was no child’s play. The Scenario was taking away the souls of Earth and leaving no weak Gifteds.
She saw that if they didn’t keep up their guard, they could also be one of those taken out early.
Her team were on their way to fight demons and secure points for their Zone.
They had set off at the crack of dawn few hours ago since they couldn’t leave the previous day when the scenario started because it was late and they needed to prepare more.
It had been a hassle organizing the men, what with the troublesome business with the Deputy post.
Their journey had been slow at first because of the raining hailstones but they had adapted to battling it with time.
Her main issue was the base they left behind.
Leaving Jeremy to secure their territory didn’t sit well with her but there was little she could do about it.
He had won fair and square over the Deputy who at the moment was complaining to those within earshot of how he had been wrongfully robbed of his post.
Earlier on, he had tried to dump the blame on her for inviting a stranger into their territory to endanger them but an icy look from her had silenced him.
It hadn’t been her fault.
She wasn’t the one who told him to accept the silly bet in the first place.
They all didn’t know who they were messing with and she couldn’t blame them.
She alone knew his identity and she couldn’t sour their relationship by revealing it to them.
He was even more powerful than she gauged him to be.
She realize that he could have easily ended then all in the tunnels if he had wanted to but he had spared them.
An argument had broken out within the board leaders the previous day when they had called a hurried meeting without the knowledge of Jeremy.
They had all been opposed to allowing him stay further and she had to make them see reasons on why to allow him stay citing his horde of angels as proof that he could protect them.
The most glaring one she didn’t point out which was obvious to everyone was that they really didn’t have a choice.
The Ability to summon angels?
It was the ultimate ability to her given the sheer power she felt the creatures exude.
She was ashamed to say that she couldn’t have fared any better than the Deputy if she fought them.
She had gone weak like everyone else at their presence.
She didn’t think he really needed them at this point except for the Zones criteria in the scenario.
He alone was an army capable of taking them out if he wanted to do so.
Her only encounters with the divine were the visions she had which she now regarded as inferior to the ability to directly call the gods messengers.
She wondered how the gods could allow such an overpowered and callous person like him to exist.
If half of the things she had heard about him was true, then they were all playing with fire.
Everything was telling her to tuck tail and run but she suppressed the instinct.
The truth still remained that they needed him and she trusted in her visions much more than anything.
They had never failed her before.
"He would have taken us all out if he wanted but he didn’t so everything is fine," She muttered to herself.
"That had to mean something, right?"
She wanted to believe that things were different this time.
She murmured a silent prayer to the gods that things went according to plan and he didn’t act as usual.
He had to be different.
For her sake.
For all of their sakes.
