Chapter 436: The Voice of the People

"Tchh, how boring" I spat out as the last of them fell to the Angels attack.

The whole place was bathed with the blood of the fallen and torn limbs were spread everywhere making it look like a butchers den.

For some reasons, Angels fought and slaughtered aggressively like carnivores. One would expect them to give their opponents a peaceful death given their divine nature.

I shook my head in disappointment as I looked at the fallen leaders especially.

I had expected them to last longer and give me a worthwhile show but it seemed that luck wasn’t on my side.

They had all been weak.

Surely, I didn’t fare as badly as they had when I had been first attacked by Angels.

Or had I? I didn’t trust my memory about my weak moments. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

Still, I had put up a better attempt. One of the leaders who I initially thought as the strongest of them all met his death at his knees.

He hadn’t even bothered to fight back. He had strangely seemed resigned to his fate unlike his allies. His face had even looked peaceful.

The leaders had been more gullible than most and they had suffered the consequence.

I had first come up with the plan of planting misinformation in their camp just to get points for our zone and because I was bored.

It hadn’t taken much to do, a simple camouflage as a suffering Gifted had done the trick and they had swallowed the bait; hook, line and sinker.

How they thought that a whole city would just get up and vacate their base leaving their valuables was beyond me but then again they were desperate.

It wasn’t too surprising. Desperation ruined logic. That much should be clear to everyone at this point.

Just then, a notification entered my system. I didn’t bother checking it since I knew what it would be.

It would be about points.

Our territory now had enough points to last us for the first Woe.

I knew that Lyra and the rest of the group got the same message when I did and I could only imagine what their reaction would be.

Confusion, joy, pride and satisfaction perhaps from some of them who no doubt thought that they had earned the points rightfully.

They were definitely in for a treat when they came back and saw that I had been the real savior while they had been away.

"They’re coming back," One of the Angels told me interrupting my thoughts and given me the impression that he had read my mind.

"How perfect," I said getting ready to meet them with the Angels at my side.

I could call off the Angels but then it was all part of the show. I needed to remind them who the real boss was and quell whatever opposition about the bodies before it started.

As I approached the gate, I saw the first batch troop in.

They all looked exhausted and worn out like they had gone through something horrible.

A few of them were injured and were supported by others who weren’t.

My eyes roamed amongst the crowd and I spotted Lyra soon enough.

She was giving instructions to her subordinates and seemed cranky given how she raised her voice and barked orders.

It was clear that she was feeling stressed. Her eyes were bloodshot and her clothes which was usually pristine was dirty with blood and grime.

They had all seen the Angels and I but apart from a few interested looks, they did little to nothing in the way of regarding us.

It was their leaders move to address me after all.

The people at the front had reached where I was and seen the carnage. They slowed down, horrified at the sight.

Disgruntled words and murmurs spread amongst them as those at the back pushed forward to see what was causing the holdup.

They stopped in their tracks too as their eyes grew wide with what they were seeing.

They eventually turned their gaze to me as the culprit.

It was clear from the way they looked between me and the bodies at intervals.

Soon, all eyes were on me.

"What is this?"

Lyra addressed me as she pushed her way to the forefront.

Despite her calm voice, I could see the blazing fire in her eyes and knew that we were up for a confrontation if I didn’t start talking.

"Calm down, it was all done in defense."

"Defense? What do you mean?"She fired back looking at me in the most suspicious way possible.

"These men showed up here looking to plunder the place in your absence. Fortunately the Angels caught them in time and took care of them. That’s all there is to it. As you no doubt saw in your system tab, that scored points for our zone. It should be enough to last us for the first woe," I said, raising my voice at the last part for the benefit of the crowd.

She went over to one of the corpses that still had his face intact.

"Dmitri Ivan and his allies," She said faintly which I only caught because of my sensitive ears.

There were murmurs among her group but this time in excitement. It grew louder until it broke into applause.

I was being hailed as a hero.

Lyra looked like she didn’t believe a word I had said but then again, it didn’t matter now.

The public was on my side.

She glanced at her group in disbelief then took off past me without another word.

I knew that she was pissed and that the whole thing was far from being over.

She would eventually seek me out to confront me, she didn’t just want to do it here in the presence of everyone.

Before I knew it, I was swarmed by everyone praising me for protecting the territory, and also the fact that I did it without backup.

"Thanks to me, we don’t have to risk our lives fighting Demons since we have accumulated enough points," The other leaders said to me shaking my hand in turns even the former deputy who still looked disgruntled.

Eventually we all headed to the city and I had to listen to them chatter about their day and what they had seen.
