Rise Of The Hoarder
Chapter 437: The Strength of a Singularity
Later that night, after the initial fervor had died down and the group had settled into their respective quarters, I had a visitor.
I was in my quarters which by the way meant a 3×3 room with a bed and a study table when I received word from one of the gifteds that Lyra wished to speak with me.
I had been ruminating over the past events and calculating future probabilities so the intrusion was an unwelcome incident.
Luckily for him, he had the good sense to deliver the message standing outside the door after knocking to confirm that I was in.
I would have murdered him if he had barged in as I was currently lying down on the bed without my mask.
To say that I was annoyed at the indignity of being called out late was putting it mildly but then again, my curiosity won over.
I had to check what it was about though I had an inkling about what it would be. This was Lyra’s moment of confronting me over the incident earlier in the day.
I slowly got up and made myself presentable before heading out.
The blasted guy was still outside my door and after a puzzled look at him, he said in a shaky voice that he had been told by Lyra to escort me to her office.
He was looking fearfully at me like I was going to pop an angel on him. Given everything, he was justified in thinking so.
"I know the way," I said, dismissing him since I had no need for him.
He nodded but still followed me albeit from a safe distance.
Great! I was being monitored so I wouldn’t step out of line or go somewhere else in the camp.
It was funny considering that none of them could stop me if I decided to go rogue.
An invisible barrier encircled the camp and I could see that the night was still chaotic due to the hailstones falling outside.
I had to put into account that the idiot was just doing his job and would receive a reprimand from Lyra if I waltz in alone.
I confirmed it as he quickened his pace when we reached her office. He still kept a safe distance between us though.
Apparently, he feared me just as much as he did Lyra which was a good thing. Better than to suffer one of those impudent fools.
He rushed forward and opened the door and I could see Lyra at her desk.
She had cleaned up herself and was looking better than she did in the morning. Pretty even.
She was still looking tired though, I had expected her to turn in for the night but apparently she took her work seriously.
"Thank you James, goodnight," she said to him.
"Goodnight ma’am," He replied with a nod as he hastily closed the door behind us.
Now that we were alone, we engaged in a staring contest.
Her expression was as steely as ever, and there was a glint in her eyes that spoke volumes about her suspicions.
"You instructed your man, James to keep strict watch on me coming here?"
"We need to talk about something bothering me," she said curtly, ignoring my question.
"We are talking now," I replied.
"I’ll go straight to the point. Did you have anything to do with the assaulters?" she asked, her voice low but intense.
I met her gaze evenly. "No, I didn’t orchestrate their attack. They came here on their own. The Angels simply dealt with them."
Her eyes narrowed, scrutinizing me for any sign of deceit. "How convenient," she said, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "And you just happened to be here, ready to take all the credit."
I shrugged. "It was luck, perhaps. Or maybe fate. But it doesn’t change the fact that we have enough points now to survive the first Woe."
Lyra folded her arms, her expression hardening. "You seem awfully pleased with yourself. Almost as if you knew this was going to happen."
I leaned in slightly, a smile playing on my lips. "Didn’t you see this in the future? Isn’t that your gift?"
Her eyes flashed with frustration. "No, I didn’t see this. I didn’t see any of this."
"If I later find out that you were behind this..."
She stared at me for a long moment, the weight of her words lost on me. We both knew that there was nothing she could do. "This isn’t over," she said finally. "I’ll be watching you."
With that, she turned her attention to the papers on her desk. I took it as a sign of dismissal and left her office.
As I walked back to my room, I couldn’t help grinning.
I knew exactly why she couldn’t see the future that related to me.
Applying my Singularity Status, I can choose to defy the natural flow of the world, altering the set future. That was why Lyra couldn’t see it. It was a future I changed.
The first Woe was about to come to an end and many would die.
