Chapter 184: A Brief Respite From The Journey

The next three days at the Kazuichi Stronghold passed in a blur of activity and anticipation. After the intense matches, everyone focused on recovering and preparing for their next challenge: the journey to the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold.

On the first day, the group took it easy, letting their bodies heal from the rigorous sparring. They spent time together, sharing stories and laughter, and bonding over shared experiences. Kazuichi and Arisu reminisced about their past adventures, Lea gradually opened up about her own experiences, and Jurou, Ryota, and Ayaka joined in with their tales.

In the evenings, they would gather around a fire, the flickering flames casting warm shadows on their faces as they spoke of their hopes and fears. Tris and Amaya, though not part of the sparring, listened intently, offering their own insights and encouragement.

Lea, who had been reserved initially, found herself growing more comfortable with her new companions. Their acceptance and camaraderie helped her start to heal from the trauma of the Kodoku experiment. She shared stories from her past, her voice gaining strength and confidence as the days went by.

On the second day, they began their preparations in earnest. Kazuichi, ever the planner, laid out a detailed itinerary for their journey. They would travel light, bringing only the essentials. Each member of the group took on specific tasks: Jurou and Ryota ensured their weapons and gear were in top condition, Arisu and Lea gathered provisions, and Ayaka scouted the area for the safest routes.

Tris and Amaya were entrusted with the responsibility of maintaining the stronghold in their absence. Kazuichi had full confidence in their abilities, knowing they were more than capable of handling any challenges that might arise. The two took their duties seriously, promising to keep the stronghold secure and its inhabitants safe.

The third day was filled with final preparations and heartfelt goodbyes. The group of six gathered in the main courtyard, their packs ready and their spirits high. Kazuichi looked around at his friends, pride, and determination shining in his eyes.

"This would probably be one of our riskiest travels by far," Kazuichi said, his voice steady. "The zombies are evolving at a faster rate, and there’s a good chance that we might encounter more Aberrants and Omegas as time goes by. Also, the scouts have also mentioned other types of zombies appearing, so it would be best to prepare for the worst-case scenario."

Tris and Amaya stood by, watching with a mix of concern and admiration.

Stepping forward, Tris decided to speak up in order to reassure Kazuichi about their absence from the Kazuichi Stronghold. "We’ll keep things running smoothly here. You focus on the task ahead and come back safe."

Seizing his chance, Ryota also spoke. Since he was going to be left behind, he had decided to prepare and train as much as he could. "You can count on us. Just make sure to bring back some good stories."

A smile appeared on the group’s face as Kazuichi nodded his head. Although he was still worried since they were leaving, he knew that the stronghold would be safe with the two of them looking after it.

"I can’t promise that, but we’ll try to bring in as many stories as we can. And thank you, both of you. We couldn’t do this without knowing the stronghold is in good hands." Kazuichi continued.

Arisu hugged Amaya tightly, whispering a few words of encouragement in her ear. Lea, still somewhat reserved, managed a smile and a nod, her way of expressing gratitude. Jurou exchanged a firm handshake with Tris, a silent promise of their return.

With everything set, the group of six made their way to the stronghold’s main gate. They paused one last time, turning to face their friends.

"Take care," Amaya called out, her voice filled with emotion.

"Stay safe," Tris added, waving as the group began their journey.

As they left the stronghold, the atmosphere shifted. The familiar surroundings of the Kazuichi Stronghold gave way to the open wilderness. The air was crisp, and the path ahead was both daunting and exhilarating. Each member of the group felt a mix of excitement and apprehension, knowing that the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold would present new challenges.

The journey began with a steady pace, Kazuichi leading the way. Arisu kept a vigilant watch, her keen senses alert for any signs of danger.

As for Jurou, he cautiously stayed at the rear, observing the surroundings while keeping a lookout on the team.

Ayaka and Lea stayed in the middle, preoccupied with their thoughts but ready for whatever lay ahead.

The first few hours passed without incident, the group moving through familiar territory. The landscape was rugged and beautiful, the mountain ranges stretching out before them. Despite the seriousness of their mission, there was a sense of camaraderie and unity that buoyed their spirits.

As they continued, the terrain grew more challenging. Steep inclines and rocky paths, as well as broken cities, tested their endurance. But they pressed on, determined to reach their destination. Kazuichi kept an eye on the map, ensuring they stayed on course.

Pretty soon, nighttime came, and the four of them set up camp. Kazuichi assigned the watch duties as they prepared the fire and cooked some dinner.

The fire crackled softly, providing warmth and a sense of security. They shared their thoughts and plans, discussing the training camp and what they hoped to achieve.

"Do you think the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold will be anything like ours?" Jurou asked out of nowhere, poking at the fire with a stick.

Kazuichi shook his head. "As far as we know, they’re not hostile to any territories. But we still can’t let our guard down."

Lea, who had been quietly listening, finally spoke up. "I’m just glad we’re going as a team. Facing this alone would be much harder." She commented, remembering how she survived in solitude during her stay in the Yamanashi Stronghold.

The next day, they resumed their journey, the sense of anticipation growing with each step. They encountered a few zombies along the way, but their combined skills made quick work of any threats.

By the time they reached a shelter by the outskirts of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold, they were tired but resolute. The imposing structure loomed ahead, a testament to the strength and resilience of its inhabitants.

As they approached the gate, the guards on duty recognized Kazuichi and the group. There was a brief moment of hesitation before the gates swung open, welcoming them into the stronghold.

The group paused just inside, taking in the sight of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold. It was both familiar and foreign, a new challenge waiting to be conquered.

Arisu turned to the group, a determined look on her face. "Let’s go show them what we’re made of."

And with that, they stepped forward, their anxiousness kicking in as they entered unknown territory.

Once inside, they were directed to their assigned lodgings, where they would prepare for the next phase of their journey. The rooms were modest but comfortable, a temporary haven after the long trek.

Jurou, ever the butler, took it upon himself to organize their belongings. "We’ll need to make sure everything is in order before we meet with the leaders here."

Lea, stretching her tired legs, nodded. "Agreed. It’s good to finally be here, though. The stronghold looks impressive."

Arisu glanced around, her keen senses still alert. "It does. And it feels secure. I think we’ll be fine here."

Though quiet, Lea felt a growing sense of anticipation. She knew this was a significant step in her journey of healing and growth. The presence of her new friends gave her strength.

That evening, as they settled into their rooms, Kazuichi called a meeting. They gathered around a small table, discussing their plans for the coming days.

"We need to be ready for anything," Kazuichi said. "This stronghold has its own dynamics, and we must adapt quickly."

Jurou agreed. "We should also use this time to learn from them. There might be techniques or strategies we haven’t encountered before."

Ayaka, ever the fighter, leaned forward. "And we need to stay sharp. Just because we’re among allies doesn’t mean we can let our guard down."

"Of course," Kazuichi spoke, his face turning a nice shade of paleness as he realized that he was far away from his safe haven. His shut-in mode started kicking in, and he wanted to lock himself somewhere.

Fortunately, he was able to regain his composure after a long mental battle of fighting off the urge.

Tomorrow was the start of the training camp, and they decided to get some early shut-eye to prepare for tomorrow. They knew that this experience was filled with uncertainty, but they had to push forward, for the sake of survival.

"Goodnight, everyone." Jurou greeted as he found a comfortable corner. After spreading his futon, he fell asleep in under a minute.

"Goodnight." Kazuichi returned, facing everyone before taking over the bed. There were three beds in total, so he figured he could take one for himself. "Good thing Ayaka’s currently not here." He mumbled to himself as he too hit the sack.
