Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 185: The Hybrid Training Camp
The Hybrid Mountain Stronghold loomed ahead, its towering peaks shrouded in mist, with the sun barely piercing through the dense fog. Kazuichi, Arisu, Lea, and Jurou had made their way to the stronghold after an intense journey, and now they stood at the entrance of what would be their home for the next several days. Ayaka had arrived shortly after, her responsibilities as a stronghold leader delaying her arrival.
The stronghold itself was a marvel—a sprawling settlement carved into the very heart of the mountain. The first half was where most hybrids lived, their homes and facilities blending seamlessly into the rocky landscape. The second half of the stronghold was reserved for humans, a stark contrast to the hybrid-dominated area. The training camp was set to take place in the hybrid zone, a perfect arena for the intense activities that lay ahead. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮
"Whoa, this is huge... no, perhaps even better than our Kazuichi Stronghold." Kazuichi commented as he admired the great view from the view of the mountain.
Nodding their heads in admiration, Arisu and the others acquiesced with what Kazuichi mentioned. They all looked up, almost straining their necks at the height of the mountain.
From a distance, they could see a huge plain right in the middle of it. One look and everyone could tell that it was man-made. This probably gave the stronghold more space to accomodate the Hybrid that resides within its walls.
The foot of the mountain had layers of walls as well as barbed wires and defensive equipment set up. From afar, watchmen could be seen scrambling from their towers before running towards the foot of the mountain.
A Hound could be seen easily scaling the mountain before arriving in front of the group, bowing his head respectfully at Kazuichi before he spoke. "I apologize for the wait. With our precautions set in stone, it is hard to accomodate and welcome the invited all at once."
"I welcome you to our humble Hybrid Mountain Stronghold. The training camp is bound to come underway, and the stronghold leader requests of your presence, Takemi Kazuichi-sama. It is a pleasure to welcome you in our stronghold." The Hound continued before turning around.
With one signal from the watchmen, a platform was lowered for them, and the four of them hopped on top of it before someone pulled them up. Well, specifically, a pulley system pulled them up but Kazuichi could tell, based on the inconsistency of its lift, that it was human powered.
No, Hybrid powered.
Once they reached the top, the group was then greeted by a majestic sight.
From as far as they eyes could see, Hybrids roamed the entire area. It was like a paradise made exclusively for Hybrids alone. Some of them weren’t even hiding it, activating their Blood Arts and walking around as if that was a normal thing on a usual Monday.
"Now, that’s what you call a lasting impression." Lea thought out loud as she admired the Hybrids from afar.
A couple of minutes later, an announcement was held, signaling the start of the training camp.
Since it was just the first day of the training camp, it began with an orientation. The atmosphere charged with anticipation. The leader of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold, Nakajima Ryuunosuke, stepped forward to greet the assembled hybrids. His presence commanded respect; a towering figure with a sharp gaze, he exuded an aura of authority that was impossible to ignore.
"Welcome to the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold," Ryuunosuke’s voice boomed across the assembly, his tone both welcoming and foreboding. "This camp is not just a test of your abilities, but a chance to push your limits, to forge bonds with your fellow hybrids, and to prepare for the challenges that lie ahead."
"We all are aware of the threat of the Gigantic Omega Zombie. While we are not particularly threatened as of the moment, we know that the fall of a stronghold is a great loss to humanity. We were once humans, but we’ve never let go of our humanity. And thus, it is only fair for us to carry the responsibility of surviving and protecting what’s left of it."
His words carried weight, and as he spoke, Kazuichi noticed several hybrids in the crowd subtly eyeing him. His reputation as a stronghold leader and a rare Dement Type Hybrid had clearly preceded him, and the attention, though unspoken, was palpable. Kazuichi remained stoic, his mind focused on the tasks ahead.
Meanwhile, Arisu was having a hard time with the saturation of smell that lingered in the place. Because of her exquisite sense of smell, heightened by the virus, she could smell a Hybrid from a mile away.
But now that everyone’s gathered in such a small space, it dampened her sense of smell since all she could smell was the rancid odor of Hybrids. Well, not like the Hybrids smelled bad, but they gave off a smell that filled Arisu’s nostrils, causing her to gag as she tried to hold her breath.
After the orientation, the participants were given free time to mingle and get to know each other. The atmosphere was a mix of curiosity and underlying tension, as hybrids from different strongholds sized each other up, quietly assessing potential allies and rivals. Despite the tension, there was an unspoken understanding among them—this camp was a unique opportunity, and everyone was eager to make the most of it.
Kazuichi, Arisu, Lea, and Jurou took the chance to explore their surroundings, navigating the hybrid zone with cautious curiosity. The stronghold was a fascinating blend of nature and civilization, with homes and training facilities carved into the mountainside, interconnected by winding paths and bridges. It was a place built for resilience, where every element served a purpose.
"Um, excuse me," Arisu said as she walked as far away from the crowd of Hybrids as possible. She couldn’t help but distance herself from them since her nose wasn’t giving her an easy time.
Worriedly, Kazuichi and the others followed suit, and the four of them continued to explore the area while enjoying the sights of the land from afar. They could tell that they were far up when the clouds were almost overhead. It was a breathtaking scenery, a drastic comparison to the dying civilization on the ground.
Their exploration led them to the cafeteria, a large, bustling hall filled with the chatter of hybrids sharing meals and stories. Unlike the other strongholds, food wasn’t free here; the participants had to pay for their meals, a reminder that nothing in this camp would come without effort. The group found a table and sat down, the tension from the journey slowly easing as they enjoyed their first proper meal in the stronghold.
Arisu, always observant, couldn’t help but notice the glances they were still receiving. "Looks like we’re the talk of the camp," she commented, a hint of amusement in her voice.
"Of course we are," Kazuichi replied, his tone casual but with an edge of seriousness. "They all know what we’re capable of. But this camp isn’t about showing off; it’s about learning, pushing our limits, and preparing for whatever’s out there."
Lea, who had been quietly observing the interactions around her, nodded in agreement. "It’s a chance to see where we stand," she added, her voice steady. "Hopefully they just stick to eyeing us." Lea whispered.
Jurou, ever the calm presence, simply smiled. "We’ll see soon enough. For now, let’s focus on what’s in front of us."
Their conversation was cut short as the cafeteria doors swung open, and Nakajima Ryuunosuke stepped in, his presence immediately commanding the attention of everyone in the room. The noise level dropped as he made his way to the front, his expression unreadable.
"Attention, everyone," Ryuunosuke’s voice carried easily through the room. "Your first activity will begin this afternoon. I suggest you finish up here and prepare yourselves. It’s going to be a long day."
With that, he turned and left, leaving the cafeteria abuzz with speculation. The group exchanged glances, each of them mentally preparing for the challenges ahead.
"Looks like the real fun is about to begin," Arisu said, a glint of excitement in her eyes.
"Just remember," Kazuichi reminded her, "this is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself."
Arisu nodded, her expression serious. "I know. But I’m ready for whatever comes."
Lea and Jurou remained silent, but the determination in their eyes spoke volumes. They had come to this camp with a purpose, and they were ready to face whatever trials awaited them.
As they finished their meal and made their way back to their quarters to prepare, the weight of what lay ahead settled over them. The Hybrid Mountain Stronghold was a place of challenges and opportunities, and they were determined to make the most of it.
The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the stronghold as the group gathered for the first activity. The tension was palpable as hybrids from different strongholds came together, each one prepared to prove themselves. Kazuichi, Arisu, Lea, and Jurou stood side by side, ready to face whatever came their way.
As the first day of the training camp continued, they knew this was just the beginning. The challenges ahead would test their strength, their resolve, and their bond as a team. But one thing was certain—they were ready to rise to the occasion.
And with that, the first day of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold training camp was underway.
