Chapter 188: Kazuichi and Kaito

Summoning the last reserves of his strength, Kazuichi launched a counterattack. He moved with blinding speed, his fists and feet striking out in a flurry of blows.

For a moment, it seemed like he had gained the upper hand, driving Kaito back with the sheer force of his assault. But Kaito was quick to adapt, his movements shifting to match Kazuichi’s speed.

The two hybrids clashed in a brutal exchange of blows, their bodies moving with grace and power that left the other hybrids watching in stunned silence. It was a battle of titans, each one pushing the other to the very brink of their abilities.

But despite Kazuichi’s best efforts, he couldn’t break through Kaito’s defenses. The Merc hybrid was simply too strong, too fast, too perfect.

"I’m this close to not holding back... but what’s this guy?" Kazuichi muttered to himself as he continuously attempted to avoid every attack that Kaito unleashed.

All his attacks were surgically precise, with each blow containing more than a hundred percent of his power. Kazuichi knew that if he got hit squarely by his attacks, he wouldn’t be able to survive.

A part of him wanted to use his Blood Arts, but he knew that he shouldn’t reveal all his cards a little too early. There was nothing wrong with it, of course, but Kazuichi just wanted to return the sentiment since Kaito didn’t seem to be going all-out as well.

Kaito’s eyes gleamed with cold satisfaction as he delivered a devastating punch to Kazuichi’s ribs, the impact sending him crashing to the ground. Kazuichi grunted in pain, his vision swimming as he struggled to push himself back up. But Kaito was already there, his foot pressing down on Kazuichi’s chest, pinning him to the ground.

"It’s over," Kaito said, his voice as cold as his eyes. "You’re strong, Kazuichi, but not strong enough."

"Urgh," Kazuichi got up but his legs collapsed on his own. Unsteadily, he pressed his fist on the ground to give him more balance. Even then, he was completely defenseless. There was nothing he could do but stay like that since time was about to run out anyways.

Kazuichi’s mind raced, searching for a way out of the predicament. But he knew he was beaten. He had given everything he had, and it wasn’t enough. The realization stung, but he forced himself to accept it. Sometimes, even the strongest had to admit defeat.

Just as Kaito was about to deliver the final blow, a sharp whistle pierced the air. Nakajima Ryuunosuke stepped forward, his expression unreadable as he signaled the end of the battle. "That’s enough," he said, his voice cutting through the tension like a knife. "Kaito, stand down."

Kaito hesitated for a moment, his eyes locked on Kazuichi’s before he finally relented. He stepped back, allowing Kazuichi to rise to his feet slowly. The two hybrids exchanged a long, silent look, a mutual respect passing between them despite the outcome of the fight.

With a hint of a smile appearing on his face, Kaito extended his hand, offering it to Kazuichi. Although they were enemies during the match, he wouldn’t antagonize someone holding himself back.

After a second of hesitation, Kazuichi reached out his hand and firmly grasped Kaito’s, staggering to get up as he regained his calmness. "Good fight." He commented, and Kaito tensely nodded.

Kazuichi wiped the blood from his lip, his body aching from the battle. He had lost, but he wasn’t defeated. He had faced one of the strongest hybrids in the camp and held his own. That was something to be proud of, even if the victory hadn’t been his.

As the dust settled, the remaining hybrids gathered around, their expressions a mix of awe and respect. Arisu, Lea, and Jurou stepped forward, their eyes filled with concern as they checked on Kazuichi. 𝓯𝙧𝓮𝓮𝒘𝓮𝙗𝙣𝒐𝒗𝒆𝓵.𝓬𝓸𝒎

"You did well," Arisu said quietly, her voice tinged with admiration. "You didn’t have to hold back, you know..." She trailed off.

Kazuichi nodded, his eyes flicking briefly to Kaito before returning to Arisu. "I wasn’t the only one."

Jurou grunted in agreement, his gaze shifting to the other hybrids who had fought in the battle. "It seems we all have a lot to learn from each other."

Kaito, who had been standing off to the side, approached the group, his expression unreadable. "You’re strong, Kazuichi," he said, his voice devoid of the coldness from earlier. "I look forward to seeing what you’re truly capable of."

Kazuichi met his gaze, a small smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "Likewise."

With the first test behind them, the group knew that the challenges ahead would only grow more intense. The Hybrid Mountain Stronghold was a place where the strong survived, and the strongest thrived. All of them were determined to prove that they belonged in the latter category.

As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the summit, Ryuunosuke gathered the remaining hybrids together. "Tomorrow, the real training begins," he announced, his voice carrying over the mountain. "Prepare yourselves. You’ll need every ounce of strength, skill, and willpower you possess to make it through the next trials."

The hybrids nodded in unison, their expressions hardened with resolve. They knew that the road ahead would be grueling, but they were ready. This was what they had trained for, what they had dreamed of. They would push themselves to the limit, and beyond, to prove their worth.

As the group dispersed, Kazuichi exchanged a glance with Arisu, Lea, and Jurou. They didn’t need words to communicate the shared understanding between them. They had each other’s backs, and together, they would face whatever challenges the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold threw their way.

And as for Kaito, the untouchable Merc hybrid with the lethal grace of a predator, he had earned their respect as a formidable ally—or perhaps, a rival. Only time will tell.

The night descended on the mountain, the cool breeze carrying with it the promise of more battles to come. Kazuichi knew that the true test was just beginning, and he was ready to face it head-on. With his friends by his side, and Kaito now in the mix, the future of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold was anything but certain. But one thing was clear—whatever happened next, it would be nothing short of epic.
