Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 189: A Mysterious Girl
The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting a soft glow over the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold as the surviving participants gathered for dinner. The first day of training had been grueling, and everyone was either exhausted or exhilarated, depending on how well they had fared in the challenges. Kazuichi, Arisu, and the rest of their group had made it through, but the day’s events weighed heavily on their minds, especially for Kazuichi.
Kazuichi sat with Arisu, Jurou, and Lea, their dinner plates filled with simple but hearty food. Though the meal was well-earned, Kazuichi barely tasted it. His mind kept drifting back to the all-for-one battle earlier in the day. The competition had been fierce, and Kaito, with his formidable Encompass Blood Art, had stood out as one of the strongest contenders. But it wasn’t Kaito who occupied Kazuichi’s thoughts.
"There was a girl," Kazuichi said quietly, his voice barely audible over the murmur of conversation around them. 𝓯𝙧𝙚𝒆𝙬𝙚𝒃𝙣𝙤𝒗𝓮𝓵.𝙘𝙤𝙢
Arisu, who was sitting next to him, looked up, her expression curious. "A girl?"
Kazuichi nodded, his brow furrowing in thought. "Yeah, she was... different. She avoided every fight, slipped through the chaos like a shadow. I didn’t even catch her name, but she survived."
Arisu raised an eyebrow. "Sounds like someone who knows how to keep out of trouble."
"Maybe," Kazuichi said, his gaze distant. "Or maybe she’s hiding something. Either way, I want to know more about her."
Jurou, who had been listening quietly, nodded in agreement. "It’s strange for someone to be that elusive, especially in a place like this. She might be more dangerous than she appears."
Lea, who had been silent until now, spoke up, her voice tinged with curiosity. "Do you think she’s a threat?"
Kazuichi shook his head slowly. "I’m not sure. But she’s definitely someone to keep an eye on."
Arisu leaned back in her chair, her eyes scanning the room as if she might spot the mysterious girl among the other Hybrids. "I didn’t notice her during the battle, but if she was that good at avoiding conflict, she might be worth talking to."
Kazuichi nodded. "That’s what I was thinking. But she’s not here right now. I’ll keep an eye out for her."
As they finished their meal, Kazuichi’s thoughts continued to linger on the girl. He had always been good at reading people, and something about her didn’t sit right with him. It wasn’t just her ability to stay hidden—it was the way she moved, the way she seemed to anticipate every attack and avoid it with ease. There was more to her than met the eye, and Kazuichi was determined to find out what it was.
As they stood up to leave the dining area, Kazuichi caught a glimpse of movement out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head, but there was nothing there—just shadows and the faint outline of trees swaying in the breeze. He frowned, his instincts telling him that he was being watched, but when he scanned the area again, it was empty.
Arisu noticed his hesitation and placed a hand on his shoulder. "What is it?"
Kazuichi shook his head, forcing a smile. "Nothing. Just tired, I guess."
But even as he said the words, he couldn’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—was out there, watching them.
—
While Kazuichi and his group settled in for the night, Jurou and Lea were working hard to complete their assigned task. The climb earlier in the day had been a test of endurance, and those who hadn’t made it to the top in time were now responsible for hauling provisions up the mountain—a grueling task, especially after an exhausting day.
Lea adjusted the heavy pack on her shoulders, her muscles burning with fatigue. Despite the weight, she kept her pace steady, determined not to fall behind. The trauma of the Kodoku experiment still haunted her, making her wary of pushing herself too far, but Jurou’s presence beside her gave her strength. He had always been a pillar of support, and tonight was no different.
"Here, let me take that," Jurou offered, reaching out to relieve one of the struggling Bulwarks of their load. The young Hybrid hesitated, glancing at the heavy pack before handing it over. Jurou accepted it without complaint, adding it to his own burden.
Lea watched as Jurou effortlessly carried the extra weight, his calm demeanor never wavering. He had always been like this—quiet, strong, and dependable. It was no wonder Kazuichi trusted him so implicitly.
"Are you okay?" Jurou asked, noticing Lea’s gaze.
Lea nodded, offering a small smile. "Just tired, but I’ll manage."
Jurou returned her smile with one of his own. "We’ll get through this together."
As they continued their ascent, more of the Bulwarks began to struggle under the weight of their packs. Jurou, ever the leader, moved from one to the next, helping where he could. He carried more than his fair share, his broad shoulders and powerful build making the task seem effortless.
By the time they reached the top, Jurou was carrying enough provisions for three people, his pace never faltering. The other Bulwarks looked at him with a mix of gratitude and respect, their admiration for him growing with each step he took.
Lea, despite her own exhaustion, couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride. Jurou wasn’t just a strong Hybrid—he was a leader, someone who inspired those around him to push beyond their limits.
As they arrived at the camp, the other Hybrids were already finishing their dinner. Jurou and Lea, along with the rest of the Bulwarks, set down their packs and began distributing the provisions. Though they hadn’t made it to the top in time, there was a sense of camaraderie among them, a bond forged through shared struggle.
Jurou handed Lea a portion of the provisions, his smile gentle but reassuring. "You did great today."
"So did you," Lea replied, her voice sincere. "Thank you for helping everyone."
Jurou shrugged, his smile widening slightly. "It’s what we do. We’re a team."
Lea nodded, feeling a warmth spread through her chest. Despite the challenges they faced, she knew that with people like Jurou by her side, they could overcome anything.
As the Bulwarks settled down to eat, Kazuichi, Arisu, and the other surviving Hybrids watched them from a distance. Kazuichi’s eyes lingered on Jurou, a mix of pride and concern in his gaze. He knew that the road ahead would only get tougher, but with friends like Jurou, Arisu, and Lea, he was ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
And as the night fell over the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold, a sense of anticipation filled the air. The first day of training had come to a close, but the true tests were yet to come. Kazuichi knew that the days ahead would push them all to their limits, but he was ready. They all were.
And in the shadows, the mysterious girl watched, her presence still unnoticed, her motives still unknown. But Kazuichi would find out soon enough.
