Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 190: Obsidian Gorge
The second day at the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold dawned bright and early, the sun’s rays peeking through the dense canopy of trees surrounding the camp. Kazuichi and his group stood together, their expressions focused as they waited for the day’s challenges to begin. The events of the previous day were still fresh in their minds, but there was no time to dwell on them. Today, they would be tested once more.
Nakajima Ryuunosuke, the leader of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold, stepped forward, his presence commanding the attention of everyone present. He was a tall, imposing figure with a sharp gaze that seemed to pierce through each of them. The Hybrids gathered around him, eager to hear what lay ahead.
"Today’s challenge," Ryuunosuke began, his voice firm, "will test your endurance, both physically and mentally. You will be traversing the Obsidian Gorge, a treacherous path that winds through the heart of the mountain. The terrain is rough, the air thin, and the obstacles numerous. You will need to rely on your strength, speed, and wits to make it through. And remember, this is not a race. It’s about survival."
It was another race... but then again, everyone knew that the most crucial aspect they had to train was their stamina and endurance. There was nothing more effective than going out there scaling mountains— the perfect challenge for Hybrids indeed.
A murmur ran through the crowd as the Hybrids exchanged glances. The Obsidian Gorge was infamous, a natural gauntlet that had claimed many in the past. But none of them would back down; they were here to prove themselves, after all.
Kazuichi clenched his fists, his resolve hardening. He knew this would be difficult, but he was determined to push through. He caught sight of Kaito in the crowd, the Merc Hybrid standing tall and unbothered by the challenge. Kaito’s Encompass Blood Art had made him a formidable opponent on the first day, and Kazuichi knew that he would be one to watch out for today as well.
As Ryuunosuke finished giving the instructions, the Hybrids lined up at the starting point. The path ahead was dark and foreboding, the entrance to the Obsidian Gorge barely visible beyond the trees. Kazuichi exchanged a glance with Arisu, who nodded back at him, her eyes sharp with determination. Jurou and Lea were both focused as well, their expressions resolute.
"Remember, stick together as much as possible," Kazuichi said quietly, his voice low. "This place is dangerous."
With a nod from Ryuunosuke, the challenge began. The Hybrids surged forward, their footsteps echoing through the forest as they entered the Obsidian Gorge. The ground was uneven, rocks jutting out at odd angles, and the path was narrow, forcing them to move carefully. The air was cooler here, the high altitude making it harder to breathe.
Almost immediately, the terrain proved to be a formidable adversary. The path wound through jagged rocks and steep inclines, forcing the Hybrids to climb, leap, and scramble to keep their footing. The ground was treacherous, crumbling beneath their feet, and several Hybrids stumbled, catching themselves just in time.
Kazuichi led the way, his eyes scanning the terrain for any signs of danger. Arisu was right behind him, her keen senses alerting her to any movement. Jurou and Lea followed close behind, their focus unwavering. The group worked together seamlessly, each of them playing to their strengths as they navigated the treacherous path.
But it wasn’t just the terrain that posed a threat. The Gorge was filled with natural obstacles, from narrow ledges to sudden drops, and the Hybrids had to be constantly on guard. At one point, a boulder came loose, crashing down the mountainside towards them. Kazuichi reacted quickly, grabbing Arisu and pulling her out of the way just in time. The boulder missed them by inches, smashing into the ground where they had been standing.
"Thanks," Arisu said breathlessly, her eyes wide.
"Stay sharp," Kazuichi replied, his heart still pounding. "This place isn’t going to go easy on us."
As they continued their climb, Kazuichi couldn’t help but notice Kaito further up the path. The Merc Hybrid moved with precision and power, his Encompass Blood Art giving him an edge as he navigated the treacherous terrain. No obstacle seemed to faze him; he tackled each one with ease, his movements fluid and controlled. It was clear that Kaito was in his element, and his prowess was impossible to ignore.
But Kazuichi’s attention was also drawn to something else—or rather, someone else. The mysterious girl in the hoodie was there again, moving through the Gorge like a ghost. She stayed at the edge of the group, avoiding any confrontation and slipping past obstacles with an almost unnatural ease. She was there, but it was as if she wasn’t; her presence was so subtle that it was easy to overlook her.
Kazuichi frowned as he watched her. There was something unsettling about the way she moved, something that made his instincts bristle. She was surviving, yes, but there was no sign of struggle, no sign of effort. It was as if she was simply gliding through the challenge, untouched by the dangers that surrounded them.
The group continued their ascent, the air growing thinner and the path more treacherous. The climb was grueling, but Kazuichi and his friends pressed on, their determination unwavering. They had come this far, and they weren’t about to give up now.
As they neared the end of the path, the terrain leveled out, the jagged rocks giving way to a narrow plateau. The Hybrids who had made it this far gathered together, their breaths coming in ragged gasps as they surveyed the landscape.
Ryuunosuke was there, waiting for them, his expression unreadable. "You’ve done well," he said, his voice carrying over the wind. "But this is only the beginning. The real test starts now."
Kazuichi’s heart sank as he realized what that meant. After all, this was just the prelude to the challenges that lay ahead.
