Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 196: The Labs and the Huge Meteor
Later that evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the stronghold in a soft orange glow, the group gathered in a secluded corner of the training grounds. The air was cool, the wind whispering through the trees, carrying with it the scent of pine and earth. It was a peaceful setting, a stark contrast to the tension that hung in the air.
Kazuichi leaned against a tree, his arms crossed over his chest as he addressed the group. "We need a plan. If we’re going to find out more about the meteorite, we have to be smart about it. We can’t just go snooping around and hope we don’t get caught."
Jurou nodded, his expression serious. "We need to figure out where they’re keeping it. It’s got to be somewhere secure, somewhere they can monitor it closely."
Arisu looked thoughtful. "The labs, maybe? They’ve always been off-limits to trainees, but I’ve heard rumors that they’re conducting all sorts of experiments down there."
Kaito frowned, considering her words. "If the meteorite is as powerful as we think, they’d want to keep it under strict control. The labs make sense. But getting in won’t be easy."
Lea sighed, rubbing her temples. "We need someone on the inside, someone who can give us information without drawing attention to themselves."
Kazuichi nodded, his mind already working through the possibilities. "I might know someone. There’s a guy I’ve trained with a few times—Kazuma. He’s been here longer than most of us, and he’s got connections in places we don’t. If anyone can get us the intel we need, it’s him."
Kaito’s eyes narrowed. "Can we trust him?"
Kazuichi shrugged. "As much as we can trust anyone in this place. But he’s got a good head on his shoulders, and he’s never been one to follow orders blindly. If I approach him the right way, he might be willing to help."
Arisu glanced around, her gaze lingering on the shadows that stretched across the ground. "We’ll have to move quickly. If they’re planning something, we need to be ahead of them, not playing catch-up."
Jurou’s expression was grim. "And if we get caught?"
Kazuichi met his gaze, his voice steady. "Then we deal with it. But we can’t afford to do nothing. Whatever’s going on here, it’s bigger than us, and it’s bigger than this training camp. We have to find out the truth, no matter what it takes."
The group exchanged determined looks, the weight of their mission settling over them like a shroud. They were stepping into the unknown, risking everything for answers that might never come. But they had no choice. The storm had set things in motion that couldn’t be undone, and now they had to see it through to the end.
Kazuichi pushed off the tree, his resolve hardening. "I’ll talk to Kazuma tonight. If he’s in, we’ll start planning our next move. But we have to be careful—one wrong step, and we could all end up as collateral damage in whatever game they’re playing."
Kaito nodded, his expression serious. "We’ll be ready. Whatever it takes, we’ll get to the bottom of this."
As the group dispersed, Kazuichi couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that had settled over him like a second skin. The storm had passed, but its shadow lingered, a reminder that they were now part of something much larger and much more dangerous than they had ever imagined.
The battle had only just begun.
Kazuichi made his way to the dormitories, the weight of the day pressing down on him with each step. The stronghold was quiet now, the usual hum of activity reduced to a whisper as night fell. He reached Kazuma’s room and knocked quietly, hoping that his friend was still awake.
A moment later, the door creaked open, and Kazuma’s familiar face appeared, his expression curious. "Kazuichi? What’s going on?"
Kazuichi glanced around the hallway, ensuring they were alone before stepping inside. "We need to talk. It’s important."
Kazuma closed the door behind him, his brow furrowed in concern. "What’s this about?"
Kazuichi took a deep breath, meeting his friend’s gaze with a seriousness that left no room for doubt. "It’s about the meteorite. And what they’re really doing here at the stronghold."
Kazuma’s eyes widened slightly, but he nodded, gesturing for Kazuichi to continue. "I’m listening."
As Kazuichi explained everything—the storm, the questions, the group’s suspicions—Kazuma listened intently, his expression growing more serious by the minute. When Kazuichi finished, there was a long silence as Kazuma processed the information.
Finally, Kazuma spoke, his voice low and thoughtful. "If what you’re saying is true, then we’re all in a lot of danger. But you’re right—this needs to be investigated. We need to know what we’re dealing with before it’s too late."
Kazuichi nodded, relieved that Kazuma was on board. "We need your help. You’ve got connections in the labs, right? We need to find out where they’re keeping the meteorite and what they’re doing with it."
Kazuma’s expression was grim. "I’ll see what I can do. But this won’t be easy. If they’re hiding something this big, they’ll have security measures in place that we can’t even imagine."
Kazuichi’s gaze was steady, his resolve unshakable. "We’re ready to take that risk. Whatever it takes, we have to uncover the truth."
Kazuma met his gaze, a flicker of respect in his eyes. "Alright. I’ll start digging and let you know what I find. But be careful, Kazuichi. If they catch wind of what we’re up to..."
Kazuichi nodded, understanding the unspoken warning. "We’ll be careful. But we can’t back down now. Not after everything that’s happened."
Kazuma placed a hand on Kazuichi’s shoulder, a silent promise of support. "We’re in this together, then. We’ll find out the truth, one way or another."
As Kazuichi left Kazuma’s room, the weight of their mission settled over him once more. The storm had passed, but the battle was far from over. The Hybrid Mountain Stronghold was a place of secrets and shadows, and now they were stepping into the darkest corners, seeking the truth that had been hidden for too long.
And they would find it—no matter the cost.
