Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 197: Rumors About Elemental Hybrid Powers
The following day, the atmosphere at the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold was noticeably calmer. It was a designated rest day, offering the group a rare chance to relax and recharge after the recent turbulence. The air was crisp, the sky clear, and for once, the stronghold felt almost peaceful.
Kazuichi, Jurou, Arisu, Kaito, and Lea decided to make the most of the day by exploring the stronghold and engaging in casual conversation with the other Hybrids. They wandered through the sprawling courtyards, past the towering walls that encircled the compound, and into the various common areas where Hybrids gathered to socialize, train, or simply unwind.
As they walked, the group made a point of striking up conversations with those they encountered, subtly steering the topic toward the recent meteorite revelation.
The initial response was a mix of skepticism and curiosity, with most Hybrids dismissing the idea of a meteor controlling the elements as little more than a wild rumor. However, as Kazuichi and his friends persisted, they began to uncover a more unsettling narrative that had been circulating among the Hybrids for some time.
"Yeah, I heard something about that," one Hybrid, a young woman with silver hair and piercing blue eyes, said as she leaned against a stone pillar. "But it wasn’t just about the meteor. There’s a rumor that the virus—whatever it is that turned people into zombies—can mutate them even further. Like giving them powers over the elements."
Jurou frowned, leaning in closer. "You’re saying a zombie could control fire? Or water?"
The woman shrugged, her expression serious. "That’s the rumor. I don’t know if there’s any truth to it, but I’ve heard it from more than a few people. Some even say they’ve seen it happen—zombies that can manipulate the elements, just like we can."
Arisu exchanged a worried glance with Kaito. "That sounds... insane."
"Insane, but not impossible," Kaito murmured. "If the virus is as unpredictable as we’ve been led to believe, who knows what kind of mutations could occur? It might explain why the higher-ups are so secretive about that meteorite."
Another Hybrid, an older man with a weathered face and a deep voice, joined the conversation. "They say the meteor might be the source of it all. The virus, the mutations, everything. It’s like the meteorite holds some kind of power, and the stronger the mutation, the closer it gets to controlling the elements."
Lea shuddered, the implications of the rumors sinking in. "If that’s true, then whoever controls that meteorite could control... everything."
Kazuichi’s jaw tightened, his mind racing. "Or worse—they could create an army of zombies with elemental powers. Imagine what kind of destruction that could cause."
The older man nodded solemnly. "That’s why people are scared. If the rumors are true, it could mean the end of us all. Or it could mean a new beginning, depending on who ends up in control."
The group fell silent, the weight of the information pressing down on them. What had started as idle gossip now seemed to carry the seeds of a much larger, more dangerous reality. If the meteorite could indeed influence the virus—or even be the source of it—then the stakes were higher than they had ever imagined.
As they continued their stroll through the stronghold, Kazuichi and his friends couldn’t shake the sense of urgency that had settled over them. The rest day, which should have been a time to relax, had instead become a day of revelation and unease. They needed answers, and they needed them soon.
Kazuichi’s gaze swept over the stronghold, taking in the bustling activity around him. They were surrounded by Hybrids—people like them who had survived against all odds and had been transformed into something more than human. But now, it seemed that survival might depend on something far more sinister.
"We need to get to the bottom of this," Kazuichi said, his voice low and determined. "If there’s even a chance that these rumors are true, we have to find out what’s really going on with that meteorite."
Jurou nodded, his expression grim. "We’ll need more than just rumors. We need proof. And we need to figure out who we can trust."
Arisu’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "Kazuma might be able to help with that. He’s got connections, and he’s been here longer than most. If there’s anyone who knows what’s really happening, it’s him."
Of course, it was the most rational sentiment out of everyone. At the last stretch of this training camp was none other than its stronghold leader— Ryuunosuke. He was the one behind the training camp as well as the challenges therein.
Kaito sighed, running a hand through his hair. "It’s not just about finding out the truth, though. It’s about what we do with it once we have it. If the meteorite is as dangerous as we think, we might be dealing with forces we can’t control."
Jurou nodded his head as he turned around, as if to be contemplating something. "We’ll figure it out. Together. But we can’t ignore this. We have to keep pushing, keep digging, until we know everything." 𝒇𝒓𝒆𝒆𝙬𝒆𝒃𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝒎
Kazuichi nodded, his resolve hardening. "Agreed. Tomorrow, we’ll regroup and start planning our next move. We’ve got a long road ahead of us, but we can’t afford to back down now."
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows across the stronghold, the group continued their casual stroll, their minds buzzing with the revelations of the day. The rumors about the meteorite and the virus had shaken them to their core, but they were determined to uncover the truth—no matter what it took.
Because now, it was no longer just about survival. It was about understanding the forces at play and ensuring that those forces didn’t fall into the wrong hands.
The storm had passed, but the real battle was just beginning. And this time, it wasn’t just the elements they were up against—it was something far more dangerous and unpredictable.
There was no doubt about it. The training camp held far more secrets than the training itself.
