Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 199: Sneaking Into The Perimeter
The night was quiet, with only the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant hoot of an owl breaking the silence. The air was thick with anticipation, every shadow seeming to hide potential threats.
Stealthily and with all cautiousness, Kazuichi led the group, his eyes sharp as they moved stealthily through the dense undergrowth surrounding the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold. His senses were on high alert, every fiber of his being attuned to the dangers that might lurk in the darkness. After all, this was unknown territory for everyone, and he didn’t want to bear the responsibility of any of them being hurt, not on his watch.
Watching everything and on high alert, Kazuichi looked around the area, trying to anticipate even the slightest of movements. He could’ve sworn that there was a figure running on his peripheral vision, but he didn’t take it to heart.
"Stay close," he whispered, his voice barely more than a breath. The others nodded, their faces set in determined expressions. Arisu was right behind him, her movements almost as silent as his. Her eyes flicked around, constantly scanning for any signs of trouble. Ayaka followed, her steps light and deliberate. Lea and Jurou brought up the rear, their forms tense but ready.
It was clear that everyone was anxious. Nevertheless, the group pressed on, hoping that the answers to their questions would be addressed as soon as they found out what was going on.
Krrk—the sound of a twig snapping underfoot made everyone freeze. Kazuichi held up a hand, signaling for the group to halt. They crouched low, ears straining for any further noise. Seconds passed like hours, but nothing came. It was just an errant branch, nothing more. Kazuichi motioned for them to continue, and they moved on, each step taken with utmost care.
"We’re almost at the perimeter," Kazuichi murmured, his voice so soft that it was almost swallowed by the night. "Remember, we need to stick to the plan. No unnecessary risks."
"Got it," Arisu replied, her voice equally hushed. She was focused, ready for whatever lay ahead. Beside her, Ayaka nodded, her eyes glinting with the resolve to see this mission through.
"All right." Jurou gulped as he nodded, crouching just behind Lea while he assumed the rear. This was where he was comfortable with, and he knew that Kazuichi would be more than enough to assume the lead.
As they approached the edge of the stronghold, the terrain grew steeper. The mountain loomed above them, its peak obscured by the darkness, as if shadows waiting to swallow all of them up.Clearly, the path ahead was treacherous, but Kazuichi navigated it with ease, his movements sure and confident. Behind him, the others followed, matching his pace as best they could.
Kshhh—the wind picked up, rustling the leaves and carrying the faint scent of pine. The sound was almost soothing, a brief respite from the tension that gripped the group. But they couldn’t afford to relax, not yet.
Before they knew it, they arrived at the aforementioned location with barely even a whisper. They crouched even lower than before, excepting something, anything, to take the jump on them. Fortunately, nothing happened, and Kazuichi turned around to see that everyone was right there with him.
"We’re here," Kazuichi whispered as they reached a small clearing near the perimeter. From here, they had a clear view of the stronghold’s defenses—a series of barriers designed to keep intruders out. But they weren’t here to break in. They were here to gather information and find out what was really going on with the meteorite and the strange events that had been occurring.
Then again, if a fight were to break out, they were more than prepared. They knew that it was inevitable, but at the deepest parts of their minds, they hoped that nothing of that sort would transpire in this quiet of a night.
"Okay, everyone knows their roles," Kazuichi said, turning to face the group. "Arisu and Ayaka, you’ll scout the east side. Lea and Jurou, take the west. I’ll cover the north. We meet back here in thirty minutes. If anything goes wrong, retreat immediately. Understood?"
"Understood," they echoed, each of them focused on the task at hand.
With a final nod, Kazuichi watched as the group split up, each pair heading in their designated direction. He lingered for a moment, his eyes scanning the area one last time before he moved towards the north. His heart pounded in his chest, but his mind was clear. This was what they had trained for, and there was no room for error.
"All right... it’s time to move..." Kazuichi muttered to himself as he darted to the nearest cover he could find.
As he moved through the underbrush, Kazuichi’s thoughts drifted to the events of the past few days. The discovery of the meteorite, the trial of elements, and now this. It was all connected, he was sure of it. But what was the endgame? What was Ryuunosuke planning? These questions gnawed at him, fueling his determination to get to the bottom of it all.
Meanwhile, on the east side, Arisu and Ayaka moved like shadows, their footsteps barely making a sound as they crept along the perimeter. Arisu’s eyes were sharp, every detail etched into her mind as they scanned the area. There were no guards in sight, which was unusual. It made her uneasy.
"Do you think they’re expecting us?" Ayaka whispered, her voice tinged with concern. Based on her body language and her smell, Arisu could tell that she was getting anxious.
"I don’t know," Arisu replied, her gaze never wavering. "But we need to be careful. Something feels off." She commented.
Ayaka nodded, her hand tightening around the hilt of her weapon. The unease was palpable, but they pressed on, determined to complete their mission.
On the west side, Lea and Jurou faced similar challenges. The terrain was rough, with steep inclines and loose rocks that made every step a potential hazard. But they were Hybrids, and they were used to such conditions. Still, the silence was unnerving.
"Jurou, do you think this is all part of their plan?" Lea asked, her voice barely audible over the sound of the wind.
"Probably," Jurou replied, his eyes scanning the area for any signs of movement. "But we need to keep going. We have to find out what they’re hiding."
Lea nodded, her determination mirroring his. They were in this together, and they wouldn’t back down.
As the thirty-minute mark approached, the group began to make their way back to the clearing. Kazuichi was the first to arrive, his face set in a grim expression. One by one, the others joined him, each of them reporting the same thing—nothing. No guards, no signs of activity, just an eerie silence that seemed to hang over the entire stronghold.
"This doesn’t make any sense," Arisu said, frustration evident in her voice. "Why would they leave the perimeter unguarded?"
"I don’t know," Kazuichi replied, his mind racing. "But we need to be careful. This could be a trap... it smells like one."
Just then, a soft thud echoed through the clearing. The group tensed, their weapons at the ready. Kazuichi motioned for them to stay low as he moved towards the source of the noise.
Krrk—another twig snapped, closer this time. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest as he strained his ears, trying to locate the source. Suddenly, a figure emerged from the shadows—a young girl, her hood pulled low over her face.
"Who are you?" Kazuichi demanded, his voice a low growl.
The girl didn’t answer, her head tilting slightly as if she was studying them. There was something unsettling about her presence, something that set Kazuichi on edge.
"Answer me," he pressed, his grip tightening on his weapon.
The girl finally spoke, her voice soft and almost ethereal. "You shouldn’t be here."
Before Kazuichi could respond, the girl vanished into the darkness, leaving behind only a whisper of movement. The group exchanged uneasy glances, the tension palpable.
"What was that about?" Ayaka asked, her voice barely more than a whisper.
"I don’t know," Kazuichi replied, his mind racing. "But we need to get out of here. Now."
Without another word, the group quickly retreated, moving silently through the underbrush until they were far enough from the stronghold. The encounter had rattled them, but they couldn’t afford to dwell on it. There were too many questions, too many unknowns. And the only way to get answers was to keep pushing forward.
As they reached the safety of their quarters, Kazuichi gathered the group together. "We need to be more careful," he said, his voice firm. "Whatever’s going on here, it’s bigger than we thought. We need to stay sharp and stick to the plan."
The others nodded, their faces reflecting the seriousness of the situation. They were in deep, but they were Hybrids, and they wouldn’t back down. The night was still young, and the challenges ahead were only just beginning.
