Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 200: Chaos And Infighting
The night hung thick with tension, the darkened sky seemingly pressing down on the world below. Kazuichi, Arisu, Ayaka, Lea, and Jurou moved as silently as shadows, their senses heightened by the uneasy quiet that enveloped them. The woods around them seemed to hold its breath, every rustle of leaves and every creak of branches amplified in the oppressive silence.
Just as they were nearing the edge of the forest, where safety awaited, Kazuichi felt a prickling sensation on the back of his neck—a sixth sense honed by years of training. He stopped abruptly, raising his hand to signal the others. They halted, their eyes flicking toward him, questioning.
Snap! The sharp sound of a twig breaking echoed through the still night. They weren’t alone.
Before any of them could react, a figure stepped out from the shadows, then another, and another. Within moments, they were surrounded, the dark forms of other Hybrids materializing from the night like wraiths. The glint of steel caught in the moonlight as the newcomers drew their weapons, their faces set in grim determination.
"Hold on," Kazuichi said, raising both hands in a gesture of peace. "We’re on the same side."
"Are we?" A tall Hybrid with a scar running down his cheek stepped forward, his voice dripping with suspicion. "Because it sure looks like you’re sneaking around where you don’t belong."
Arisu stepped up beside Kazuichi, her eyes narrowed. "We could say the same about you. What are you doing here?"
The scarred Hybrid hesitated for a fraction of a second, but his resolve hardened. "Doesn’t matter. You’re not going anywhere."
The tension in the air became palpable, every Hybrid in the clearing tensing as if on the edge of a knife. Kazuichi’s mind raced, trying to piece together what was happening. They were all Hybrids, all supposed to be on the same side, and yet here they were, facing each other like enemies. It didn’t make sense.
"Listen," Kazuichi said, trying to defuse the situation. "There’s been a misunderstanding. We’re just trying to—"
Krrk! Another twig snapped, this time from the opposite direction. The Hybrids spun around, weapons at the ready, only to find more figures emerging from the shadows. Another group of Hybrids had arrived, and they, too, looked less than friendly.
"What’s going on here?" demanded one of the newcomers, a woman with short-cropped hair and a fierce expression. Her eyes darted from Kazuichi’s group to the scarred Hybrid’s group, her suspicion clear.
"We’re not the enemy," Jurou said, stepping forward with his hands raised. "We’re all here for the same reason, right? To figure out what’s going on."
"Or maybe you’re here to sabotage us," the short-haired woman shot back, her eyes narrowing. "We’ve heard the rumors, you know. About the meteorite and the elements. Who’s to say you’re not working for whoever’s behind this?"
The situation was rapidly spiraling out of control. Kazuichi could see it in the way the Hybrids were starting to shift their stances, the way their hands tightened on their weapons. It wouldn’t take much for this to turn into a full-blown fight.
"We’re wasting time!" Arisu hissed under her breath, her hand inching toward her own weapon. "We need to get out of here before this gets ugly."
But there was no time. A flash of movement caught Kazuichi’s eye—a blur of a figure darting through the trees. The hooded girl. She was here, watching them.
"Wait!" Kazuichi shouted, pointing toward the figure. "There! The girl!"
But it was too late. The hooded girl disappeared into the shadows, leaving chaos in her wake. The Hybrids, already on edge, took her sudden appearance as a signal—whether it was to attack or retreat, no one seemed to know. In the confusion, weapons were drawn, and all hell broke loose.
Clang! The sound of steel clashing against steel echoed through the night as the first Hybrid swung his sword, aiming for Kazuichi. He barely managed to parry the blow, the force of the impact vibrating through his arms.
"We don’t have to do this!" Kazuichi shouted, but his words were drowned out by the sounds of battle.
The clearing erupted into chaos as Hybrids turned on each other, the night filled with the shing of blades, the thwack of fists, and the grunts of pain. It was impossible to tell who was on whose side anymore—everywhere Kazuichi looked, Hybrids were fighting, caught up in the madness that had taken hold.
Arisu was holding her own against two attackers, her movements swift and precise as she deflected their blows with her twin daggers. "Kazuichi! We need to get out of here!" she called over the din.
"Fall back!" Kazuichi ordered, barely dodging another strike aimed at his head. He could feel the desperation mounting, the need to escape this nightmare before it was too late. But the Hybrids had them surrounded, and there was no clear path to safety.
Lea and Jurou were fighting back-to-back, their coordination seamless as they fended off the attackers. "There’s too many of them!" Jurou shouted, sweat dripping down his face as he swung his mace in a wide arc, forcing the Hybrids back.
Ayaka, usually so composed, was struggling to keep her attackers at bay, her breath coming in ragged gasps. "We’re not going to make it like this!"
Kshhh!—the wind picked up again, whipping through the trees and carrying the scent of blood and sweat. It was a feral, primal sound, matching the savage intensity of the battle.
In the midst of the chaos, Kazuichi caught sight of the scarred Hybrid, still fighting with a fierce determination. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and in that instant, Kazuichi saw something that shook him to his core—fear. The scarred Hybrid wasn’t fighting because he wanted to; he was fighting because he was terrified. Terrified of the unknown, of the danger that lurked in the shadows, and of the idea that no one could be trusted anymore.
"Stop!" Kazuichi shouted, using all his strength to shove back his attackers. "We’re not enemies! This is what they want—to divide us, to make us fight each other!"
But his words fell on deaf ears. The fighting continued, fueled by fear and confusion.
Krrk! The sound of a tree branch breaking nearby made Kazuichi turn his head, just in time to see the hooded girl again, her eyes glowing faintly in the darkness. For a brief moment, she looked directly at him, her expression unreadable. Then she vanished, leaving him with more questions than answers.
"Kazuichi!" Arisu’s voice snapped him back to reality. She was barely holding off another attacker, her face contorted with effort.
Realizing they couldn’t hold out much longer, Kazuichi made a split-second decision. "Retreat! Everyone, fall back!"
But there was no way to retreat, not with the Hybrids pressing in from all sides. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest as he searched desperately for a way out. The night had turned into a nightmare, and there seemed to be no escape.
And then, as if in answer to his prayers, a flash of light exploded in the midst of the fighting, blinding everyone. The Hybrids staggered back, momentarily stunned by the sudden brilliance. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
KABOOM! The sound of the explosion echoed through the clearing, followed by a deafening silence. When the light faded, Kazuichi blinked rapidly, trying to clear the spots from his vision.
"What...what just happened?" Ayaka stammered, her voice trembling.
In the aftermath of the explosion, the Hybrids had stopped fighting, their confusion mirrored on each other’s faces. The tension that had hung so thick in the air was suddenly gone, replaced by a stunned silence. It was as if the explosion had shocked them back to their senses.
Slowly, Kazuichi lowered his weapon, his heart still racing. He glanced around at the other Hybrids, who were doing the same. No one moved, no one spoke. They were all too dazed to understand what had just happened.
"Is everyone...okay?" Lea asked cautiously, her eyes wide with shock.
"We’re fine," Jurou replied, though his voice was shaky. "But what the hell was that?"
Kazuichi shook his head, trying to make sense of it all. The hooded girl had been there, he was sure of it, and then she was gone. Had she caused the explosion? Was she trying to protect them? Or was this all part of some larger plan?
Before he could voice his thoughts, the scarred Hybrid took a step forward, his expression hardening once more. "This isn’t over," he said, his voice cold. "We’ll figure out what’s going on here, and when we do, you’d better hope you’re on the right side."
Without another word, he turned and walked away, his group following close behind. One by one, the other Hybrids began to disperse, each of them looking as dazed and confused as Kazuichi felt.
As the clearing emptied, Kazuichi finally allowed himself to relax, his muscles trembling from the adrenaline that was still coursing through his veins. They had narrowly avoided a disaster, but he knew this was far from over.
Arisu came up beside him, her face pale but resolute. "What now?" she asked softly.
Kazuichi took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. "Now...we regroup. We need to figure out what’s going on and why that girl is so important. And we need to do it before things get any worse."
Ayaka, Lea, and Jurou gathered around them, their expressions reflecting the same determination. They had been through hell tonight, but they were still standing, and they were still together.
"Whatever happens," Kazuichi continued, his voice firm, "we stick together. We can’t let them divide us."
As they started to make their way back through the forest, Kazuichi couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. The hooded girl was out there somewhere, and she held the key to everything. They just had to find her before it was too late.
But for now, they had survived the night, and that was enough. For now.
