Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 218: Lightning
The battlefield in Sector 12 was a hellscape of rotting flesh and gnarled bones, where the undead clawed and snarled at anything with a heartbeat. The stench of decay hung thick in the air, the scent mingling with the acrid tang of blood that slicked the ground beneath Kazuichi’s boots. He stood amidst the wreckage, his breath coming in ragged gasps as he surveyed the carnage he had wrought.
His body felt different now—heavier, denser, yet thrumming with a newfound vitality that coursed through his veins like liquid fire. His muscles had grown, expanding with a power that was both exhilarating and terrifying. He could feel the strength coiled within them, ready to explode at a moment’s notice, and yet, there was a strange calm that settled over him, a clarity that allowed him to see the battlefield with newfound precision.
The Omega Zombies and Aberrants had descended upon him in a relentless wave, their grotesque forms driven by a mindless hunger for flesh. But Kazuichi was no longer the prey in this deadly game. He had become the predator.
Thud! A grotesque Omega Zombie lunged at him from the side, its massive, rotting hand reaching out to grab him. Kazuichi didn’t flinch. Instead, he pivoted on his heel, his newly empowered body moving with a speed that left the creature trailing in slow motion. With a single, devastating punch, he sent the zombie flying back into the horde, its bones snapping with a sickening CRACK! as it collided with its own kind.
Kazuichi’s fist was still tingling from the impact when he felt it—a pulse of energy radiating outward from deep within his core. It was like a shockwave, bursting forth from his body and sending a ripple of force through the air around him. The nearest zombies were blasted away, their bodies torn apart by the sheer power of the wave.
Boom!
"Just what... is this power?" Kazuichi muttered under his breath, his eyes narrowing as he watched the water droplets suspended in the air around him, shimmering with an ethereal light. The orb of water from earlier still floated above his palm, a mesmerizing sphere that pulsed in time with the rhythm of his heart.
He had known he was different—he had felt it ever since he awoke in the infirmary. But this...this was beyond anything he had imagined. The power was intoxicating, a heady rush that filled him with a sense of invincibility. But beneath the surface, there was something else—a whisper of danger, of something darker lurking just beyond the edge of his consciousness.
A trio of Aberrants charged at him, their twisted forms snarling with rage. Kazuichi didn’t hesitate. His body moved on instinct, muscles rippling with newfound strength as he met their charge head-on. He ducked beneath the first swipe, his fists slamming into the second Aberrant’s chest with bone-crushing force. SMASH! The creature let out a strangled cry as it was sent hurtling back, its body crumpling like a ragdoll against the debris.
The third Aberrant leaped at him, its claws aimed for his throat. Kazuichi twisted to the side, narrowly avoiding the deadly strike, and brought his knee up into the creature’s midsection.
Thump! It doubled over, gasping for breath, and Kazuichi finished it off with a savage uppercut that snapped its head back with a wet, crunching sound.
Crack!
The battlefield was littered with the corpses of the undead, their bodies strewn across the ground like broken dolls. But Kazuichi barely noticed. His attention was focused inward, on the surging power that threatened to overwhelm him. The water orb above his palm began to shift, its surface rippling as if stirred by an unseen force. He could feel it responding to his emotions, the liquid tightening and compressing with each beat of his heart.
Another wave of Omega Zombies charged at him, their collective roar filling the air with a deafening groan. Kazuichi narrowed his eyes, a grim smile curling at the edges of his lips. He could feel the water orb growing in size, the energy within it building to a crescendo. Without thinking, he thrust his hand forward, sending the orb hurtling toward the oncoming horde.
Whooosh!
The moment the orb made contact, it detonated with a blinding flash of light. KABOOM! Water exploded outward in a massive shockwave, tearing through the zombies with the force of a hurricane. Their bodies were shredded by the high-pressure water, limbs and torsos flying in every direction. Kazuichi stood at the epicenter of the blast, his eyes wide with shock as he watched the devastation unfold.
He couldn’t believe what he was seeing—what he had done. The power that had surged through him was unlike anything he had ever experienced. It was exhilarating, yes, but there was something terrifying about it, too. The ease with which he had unleashed such destruction sent a shiver down his spine.
More Omega Zombies emerged from the shadows, drawn by the noise and the scent of blood. They were relentless, their numbers seemingly endless. But Kazuichi felt no fear. The power within him was growing, pulsing with every beat of his heart, and he welcomed the challenge.
"Come on, then!" Kazuichi shouted, his voice echoing across the battlefield. His body tensed as he prepared for the next wave, muscles rippling beneath his skin. He could feel the energy building again, a storm of power that crackled with electric intensity.
A large Aberrant broke through the ranks, its hulking form towering over the other zombies. It let out a guttural roar, charging at Kazuichi with reckless abandon. But Kazuichi was ready. He planted his feet firmly on the ground, his hands curling into fists as the energy surged through him.
With a primal scream, he released the pent-up energy in a powerful shockwave that radiated from his body. The ground trembled beneath him as the wave of force blasted the Aberrant off its feet, sending it crashing into the horde behind it. The shockwave didn’t stop there—it continued outward, tearing through the zombies like a tidal wave, leaving nothing but destruction in its wake.
Kazuichi dropped to one knee, panting heavily as the last remnants of the energy dissipated. He was exhausted, his muscles screaming in protest from the strain. But as he looked up at the carnage around him, he couldn’t help but feel a surge of satisfaction. He had done it. He had survived.
But it wasn’t over yet.
The air around him began to thrum with energy once more, a low hum that sent vibrations through his bones. Kazuichi’s eyes widened as he realized what was happening. The orb of water had reformed, hovering above his palm with a life of its own. It was larger this time, pulsing with a bright blue light that cast eerie shadows on the ground around him.
"What... is this?" Kazuichi whispered, his voice trembling with awe and fear. The water orb seemed to respond to his voice, its surface rippling as if in answer.
He stared at the orb, transfixed by the way it shimmered in the darkness. The power it contained was immense—too much for him to comprehend. He could feel it pulling at him, urging him to release it, to let it loose upon the world.
But Kazuichi hesitated. This power, this... thing inside him—it was dangerous. It was something beyond his control, something that could easily consume him if he wasn’t careful.
He clenched his fist, willing the orb to disappear, to stop its relentless pulsing. But the water refused to obey, instead growing brighter, more intense as if feeding off his fear and uncertainty.
"No," Kazuichi muttered, shaking his head. He couldn’t let this thing control him. He couldn’t let it take over.
He looked down at his hands, his breath catching in his throat as he saw the orb of water now spinning rapidly, faster and faster, until it was a blur of motion. It was too late to stop it. The power had taken on a life of its own, and it was beyond his ability to control.
With a final, desperate shout, Kazuichi released the energy, sending the orb hurtling into the sky.
Bam! It exploded above him in a dazzling display of light and water, the droplets raining down around him like a cleansing shower.
The battlefield fell silent, the last remnants of the undead obliterated by the blast. Kazuichi stood alone amidst the wreckage, his body trembling with exhaustion, his mind racing with the implications of what had just happened.
He looked at his hands, now empty, and then up at the sky, where the last traces of the water orb were fading into the night. He had tapped into something powerful—something dangerous. And he wasn’t sure if he would ever be able to control it.
But one thing was certain: whatever this power was, it was now a part of him. And he would have to learn to live with it, or it would consume him.
Kazuichi took a deep breath, his heart pounding in his chest as he turned away from the battlefield and began the long trek back to the stronghold. The night was still young, and the storm inside him was just beginning to stir.
