Shut-In Of The 'Dead'
Chapter 219: The Hooded Girl of Hybrid Mountain Stronghold
Kazuichi wiped the sweat from his brow, gasping for breath amidst the wreckage of Sector 12. Bodies of Omega Zombies and Aberrants lay strewn around him, their once fearsome forms now lifeless. The battle had been grueling, but his newfound power had given him the edge needed to prevail. He glanced down at his hand, where the orb of water still floated, shimmering with an ethereal glow. Clenching his fist, he watched the water dissipate into droplets that fell to the ground.
"Guess I’m getting the hang of this..." Kazuichi muttered, a mix of exhaustion and satisfaction in his voice.
As he bent down to collect the meteorite ores from the fallen zombies, something caught his attention—a shadowy figure in the distance. Narrowing his eyes, he recognized the same hooded girl he had seen before. Standing on a hill, she watched him intently. The memory of her previous appearance sent a shiver down his spine. Who was she? And why did she seem so interested in him?
Hesitating for a moment, Kazuichi debated whether to confront her. His mission was complete, and he had no obligation to linger. Yet, something about her presence gnawed at him, a curiosity that refused to be ignored. Just as he began to turn away, he made up his mind.
"I need answers," he muttered, breaking into a sprint toward the girl.
The ground beneath him quaked as he launched forward, newfound power in his legs propelling him with incredible speed. Noticing his movement, the hooded girl turned to flee, but Kazuichi was already closing the distance between them.
"Get back here!" His shout echoed across the barren landscape.
Darting through the ruins, the girl’s movements were swift and agile. Weaving between crumbling structures, her form became a blur as she tried to evade him. Gritting his teeth, Kazuichi pushed himself harder, the thrill of the chase igniting a primal instinct within him to catch her at all costs.
The ruins of Sector 12 formed a maze of debris and wreckage, but Kazuichi’s enhanced senses allowed him to navigate with ease. Leaping over fallen beams, ducking under low-hanging wires, and sliding across patches of rubble, he felt the wind whip past his ears, his heartbeat thundering in his chest.
"Stop running!" he called out, frustration tinging his voice.
A glance over her shoulder revealed her hood obscuring most of her face. Instead of responding, she quickened her pace, disappearing around a corner. A growl of annoyance escaped Kazuichi, his determination only growing stronger. She wasn’t going to slip away again.
Rounding the corner, he caught sight of her just ahead, her silhouette barely visible in the dim light. The terrain grew more treacherous, jagged metal and shards of glass littering the ground. Without slowing down, Kazuichi focused entirely on the girl. Surging power coursed through him, his muscles straining as he pushed beyond his limits.
Suddenly, she veered left, darting into a narrow alleyway between two collapsed buildings. Without hesitation, Kazuichi followed, feet pounding against the ground. The alley’s walls closed in around him, the space barely wide enough for him to maneuver, but he didn’t care. Too close now to let her escape, his focus remained unwavering.
Just as he was about to reach her, the girl leaped onto a pile of debris and scaled a crumbling wall with remarkable agility. Kazuichi cursed under his breath, eyes narrowing as he prepared to follow. With a burst of energy, he launched himself upward, hands gripping the rough surface as he pulled himself up.
"Krah!" Crumbling stone and shifting metal filled the air as the wall gave way under his weight. Instinctively, he twisted in midair, grabbing hold of a nearby ledge. Dangling precariously for a moment, his fingers dug into the stone before he hauled himself up.
Already on the move, the girl jumped from rooftop to rooftop with almost inhuman grace. Scrambling after her, Kazuichi barely touched the ground as he leaped across the gaps. His heart raced, adrenaline pumping through his veins as he pushed harder, the world around him blurring.
"You’re not getting away this time!" he growled, his voice lost in the wind.
Suddenly, the girl changed direction, heading toward the edge of the building. Kazuichi’s eyes widened as he realized what she was about to do. She was going to jump. Without a second thought, he picked up speed, legs burning with effort as he closed the gap.
"Gotcha!" he roared, lunging forward with his hand outstretched.
But the girl was faster. Leaping off the building’s edge, her body plummeted toward the ground below. Momentum carried Kazuichi over the edge, and for a brief moment, he was airborne, the ground rushing up to meet him. His mind raced, summoning every ounce of strength left.
"Not yet...!" he hissed through gritted teeth.
With a final burst of energy, he twisted in midair, latching onto the girl’s cloak. The fabric tore with a loud rip, but it slowed her descent just enough. Feet hit the ground with a resounding thud, the impact sending shockwaves through his body. Stumbling, he nearly fell from the force of the landing.
A second later, the girl hit the ground, rolling to absorb the impact before springing back to her feet. But before she could take another step, Kazuichi was upon her, grabbing her arm and spinning her around. Swiftly, he pinned her to the ground.
"Who are you?!" he demanded, voice low and dangerous.
Struggling against his grip, the girl found herself held firmly in place. Breath came in ragged gasps, Kazuichi’s body trembling with exhaustion and adrenaline. Feeling her pulse quicken under his fingers, he noted the fear in her eyes, unmistakable.
For a moment, neither moved, the world around them eerily silent. Kazuichi’s gaze bore into hers, searching for answers in the depths of her hidden face. Yet, she remained silent, lips pressed into a thin line as she stared back at him defiantly.
"Fine," he muttered, his voice barely above a whisper. "Let’s see who you really are."
In a swift motion, he reached for her hood, fingers brushing against the rough fabric. The girl tensed, her body stiffening as she realized what he was about to do. Kazuichi’s heart pounded in his chest, anticipation nearly unbearable.
Hesitating for a brief moment, breath caught in his throat, then, with a decisive tug, he pulled back the hood, revealing her face.
And the world around him seemed to stop.
