Chapter 222: The Big Revelation

Kazuichi’s boots crunched softly on the gravel as the towering walls of the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold came into view. The familiar sight of the sturdy gates, reinforced with layers of steel and concrete, brought a wave of relief washing over him. He hadn’t realized how much tension he was holding in his body until now. Beside him, Himeno walked in silence, her eyes focused ahead, but he could tell she was just as eager to get back inside the safety of the stronghold.

As they approached, the heavy gate creaked open with a low groan, revealing the dimly lit interior of the stronghold. The sentries posted atop the walls gave them a quick nod before returning to their vigil. Kazuichi let out a breath he hadn’t realized he was holding.

"Home," he muttered, a small smile tugging at the corner of his lips.

Himeno glanced at him but remained silent. She had told him earlier that she’d separate from him before entering the stronghold, and true to her word, she gave him a brief nod and turned down a narrow path that led away from the main entrance.

Kazuichi watched her go for a moment, wondering if she would ever fully rejoin their group, or if she would always remain on the outskirts, watching from afar. He shook the thought from his mind. There were more pressing matters at hand.

As he stepped through the gates, the familiar bustle of the stronghold greeted him. Survivors moved about with purpose—some repairing equipment, others sorting through supplies—but despite the activity, the air felt tense. The faint sound of voices reached his ears, and as Kazuichi made his way toward the central plaza, he spotted a group of familiar faces waiting for him.

"Kazuichi!"

The voice belonged to Ayaka, her slender frame sprinting toward him with surprising speed. She skidded to a stop in front of him, her eyes wide with concern. "Where have you been? You weren’t feeling well last week, and then you just—just took off! You had us all worried sick!"

Kazuichi winced, feeling a pang of guilt. "I’m fine, Ayaka. Really."

Before he could explain further, Arisu appeared beside her, arms crossed and a frown plastered across her face. "You don’t look fine." Her tone was sharp, but her eyes betrayed the worry she was trying to mask. "You’ve been pushing yourself too hard lately. You’re not invincible, you know."

Kazuichi sighed, running a hand through his hair. "I know, I know... but I had to go. I’m fine now." He shot them a reassuring grin, though he could tell by their expressions that they weren’t convinced.

Jurou approached next, his broad shoulders and calm demeanor offering a quiet sense of comfort. "We were all worried. You’ve been out of it for days. Are you sure about this? Totally sure, young master?

Kazuichi opened his mouth to respond, but before he could get a word in, Lea stepped forward, her usual bright energy dimmed by concern. "You didn’t even say goodbye," she said softly, her blue eyes searching his face. "We’ve been looking out for you, you know? But you just left..."

The guilt weighed heavily on him now. Kazuichi exhaled, his shoulders sagging slightly. "I’m sorry, guys. I didn’t mean to worry you. I just... I needed to clear my head. Things have been a bit overwhelming lately."

"We know," Ayaka said, her voice softening. "But you don’t have to face it all alone. We’re here for you, Kazuichi. We’ve always been."

He gave her a small nod, feeling a surge of gratitude for his friends. He had been so focused on his mission, on surviving, that he had forgotten how much they cared.

Before he could say anything more, another figure stepped into the clearing, arms folded and an unreadable expression on his face. Kaito.

"So," Kaito said, his voice steady but tinged with an edge, "you’re really okay?"

Kazuichi met his gaze, a flicker of tension passing between them. It had been weeks since they last spoke, and things had been... complicated between them. Kaito had always been the protective type, especially after the Yamanashi Stronghold fell. But ever since Kazuichi’s powers had awakened, there had been a shift in their relationship.

"I’m fine, Kaito," Kazuichi replied, his tone firm. "Really."

Kaito studied him for a moment longer before nodding, though his expression remained unreadable. "Good. Just... don’t pull a stunt like that again. You’re not the only one who gets to be reckless."

Kazuichi cracked a smile at that, despite the tension. "Fair enough."

Jurou stepped forward, breaking the silence. "So? How’d it go out there? What happened?" 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Kazuichi paused, glancing around at his friends. They had a right to know what he had been up to, but how much should he tell them? His encounter with Himeno was still fresh in his mind, and he wasn’t sure how to explain that part yet. But they deserved some answers.

"I went to Sector 12," Kazuichi began, keeping his voice low as he scanned the group. "There was something... off about the place. More Omega and Aberrant zombies than I’ve ever seen before. I barely made it through."

Lea’s eyes widened. "Sector 12? Kazuichi, that’s insane! No wonder we were worried..."

"Yeah, well..." Kazuichi shrugged, trying to downplay it, but Ayaka’s stern look made him reconsider.

Arisu raised an eyebrow. "And yet here you are, walking back like it was just another day at the office."

"I wouldn’t say that," Kazuichi replied with a wry grin. "It wasn’t easy. But I had help."

That caught their attention.

"Help?" Jurou asked, his brow furrowing. "From who?"

Kazuichi hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "You wouldn’t believe me if I told you."

Ayaka gave him a look, crossing her arms over her chest. "Try us."

Kazuichi sighed. He was going to have to tell them sooner or later. "It was... Himeno."

The reactions were immediate. Ayaka’s eyes widened in shock, Lea gasped, and even Jurou looked taken aback. Arisu, however, remained quiet, her sharp gaze focused intently on him.

"Himeno?" Lea repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. "But... she’s dead."

Kazuichi shook his head. "No, she’s alive. I saw her. She helped me fight off the zombies."

"That’s impossible," Ayaka said, shaking her head. "Himeno died when the Yamanashi Stronghold fell. Or maybe..."

"I thought so too," Kazuichi replied, his voice softening. "But she’s alive, Ayaka. She’s been watching from the shadows all this time."

Arisu stepped forward, her gaze intense. "And why didn’t she come back? If she’s been alive all this time, why didn’t she return to us?"

Kazuichi glanced away, unsure of how to answer. Himeno had been clear about her reasons for staying away, but he didn’t know how to explain it to his friends.

"She said she didn’t want to interfere," Kazuichi finally said, his voice low. "She thought it was better this way."

"Better?" Ayaka repeated, incredulous. "Well, I kind of get her... ah, the mind of a young maiden." Ayaka let out a sigh.

Kazuichi flinched at her words, but before he could respond, Kaito spoke up. "It doesn’t matter. What matters is that she’s alive, and we need to figure out what that means for us."

"I guess... but it wouldn’t hurt if she said hi. I mean, you’ve been looking for her, right?"

The group fell silent at that, each lost in their own thoughts. The revelation of Himeno’s survival had shaken them all, and Kazuichi could feel the weight of their questions pressing down on him.

Ayaka was the first to break the silence, her voice soft but resolute. "We need to talk to her."

Kazuichi nodded slowly. "I don’t know if she’ll want to meet with all of you... but I’ll try."

Lea looked at him with wide eyes, her concern evident. "Kazuichi, be careful. If she’s been hiding all this time, there’s a reason for it. Don’t push her too hard."

"I won’t," Kazuichi assured her.

As the conversation wound down, Arisu stepped forward, placing a hand on Kazuichi’s shoulder. "We’ve got your back, no matter what."

Kazuichi smiled at that, the familiar warmth of his friends’ support easing some of the tension in his chest. "Thanks, Arisu."

The night deepened around them, the stars twinkling faintly above as the stronghold settled into a tense quiet. Though the revelation of Himeno’s survival had brought more questions than answers, there was a sense of resolve in the group. They would face whatever came next—together.

Kazuichi glanced at his friends, feeling a renewed sense of purpose. Whatever the future held, he knew he wasn’t alone.

And with that thought, the group slowly dispersed, each returning to their respective quarters for the night. But as Kazuichi made his way back to his room, his mind was already racing with thoughts of what tomorrow would bring. Himeno’s return had changed everything, and he wasn’t sure what that meant for him or his friends. But one thing was certain—things were only going to get more complicated from here.

And Kazuichi wasn’t sure if he was ready for what was coming.
