Chapter 221: The Trip Back

The sun began its descent, casting a warm orange glow across the desolate landscape as Kazuichi and Himeno made their way back toward the Hybrid Mountain Stronghold. Shadows stretched long over the cracked earth, and a subtle chill crept into the air. The night was fast approaching, and with it came the inevitable rise of the undead. Kazuichi could feel it in his bones—the way the world seemed to tense as dusk fell, as though the very ground beneath them was holding its breath.

Beside him, Himeno walked in silence, her gaze fixed ahead. Though they hadn’t spoken much since their reunion, an unspoken understanding hung between them. There was a comfort in her presence, a sense of familiarity that Kazuichi had thought he’d lost forever. But as much as he wanted to bask in that feeling, there was still so much they needed to face—starting with the undead that lurked in the growing shadows.

A low, guttural growl echoed from the distance, sending a shiver up Kazuichi’s spine. He instinctively placed a hand on the hilt of his weapon, eyes scanning the horizon for any signs of movement. "They’re coming," he muttered, narrowing his eyes. His senses heightened, alert to the shifting air around them.

Himeno glanced at him with a knowing look. "They always do at night. Stay sharp." Her voice was calm, almost as though she had grown used to this routine.

Before long, the first of the zombies emerged from the ruins ahead, their decaying bodies stumbling forward with unnatural hunger. The unmistakable scent of death filled the air as their raspy growls became louder. Kazuichi readied himself, muscles tensing as he prepared for the fight.

Without waiting for another word, Himeno stepped forward, her eyes gleaming with a quiet confidence. With a swift, fluid motion, she raised her hand, and Kazuichi watched in awe as flames erupted from her fingertips, crackling and dancing in the dim light. The fire roared to life, swirling around her like a living entity. It was mesmerizing.

Fwoosh!

The first zombie was instantly engulfed in a pillar of fire. Its body contorted grotesquely as the flames consumed it, and within moments, nothing but ashes remained. Himeno didn’t even break a sweat.

"Whoa..." Kazuichi couldn’t help but breathe out in astonishment. "You can control fire?"

Himeno smirked, her eyes never leaving the advancing horde. "I picked up a few tricks along the way."

As more zombies lurched toward them, Himeno extended her arms, and flames burst forth in a wide arc, incinerating several more with a single motion. The fire obeyed her commands as if it were an extension of her will, precise and deadly. Kazuichi marveled at how effortlessly she wielded such destructive power.

But there was no time to dwell on it. A group of zombies flanked them from the side, moving faster than he expected. Reacting quickly, Kazuichi lunged forward, his blade slicing through the air with a sharp whoosh. He cleaved through one of the undead, its body crumpling to the ground in a lifeless heap.

"Kazuichi, watch your right!" Himeno’s warning came just in time. He spun around, barely dodging the snapping jaws of another zombie. His heart raced, adrenaline pumping through his veins as he brought his blade down in a sweeping motion, cutting through flesh and bone.

Slash!

The zombie fell, but more took its place, their numbers increasing as the sky darkened. Himeno didn’t hesitate. With a wave of her hand, she sent another torrent of flames toward the horde, the intense heat forcing the undead to scatter. The fire blazed brightly in the encroaching darkness, casting eerie shadows across the battlefield.

Kazuichi panted, wiping sweat from his brow. "You’ve really mastered that, haven’t you?" His voice was tinged with admiration, but there was a hint of envy as well. He had only just awakened his own power, and it still felt foreign to him, like a weapon he didn’t know how to wield.

Himeno glanced at him, her eyes softening. "You’ll get the hang of it. It just takes time." She paused, taking down another zombie with a quick burst of fire before turning her attention fully to him. "Your power is different from mine, but it’s just as strong. The key is learning how to channel it."

Kazuichi frowned, gripping the hilt of his weapon tightly. "Channel it? How do I do that? I barely know what this power even is."

"It’s part of you now," Himeno explained, stepping closer as they momentarily regrouped. "Think of it like... an extension of yourself. You have to feel it, not just use it. You can’t force it; you have to let it flow naturally, like the way I control fire."

Her words echoed in his mind as he tried to process what she was saying. Feel it. Let it flow. It sounded easier than it was. All he knew was that his newfound power had saved him earlier, but it had come out in a rush of emotion—wild, uncontrollable. How was he supposed to harness that?

Another group of zombies emerged from the shadows, their snarls growing louder as they closed in. Kazuichi took a deep breath, feeling the familiar surge of power begin to stir within him. His muscles tensed, his heart pounding in his chest as he prepared to fight.

Whoosh!

A zombie lunged at him, but before it could make contact, Kazuichi’s body reacted instinctively. He felt the power flow through him, and in an instant, he moved with speed and precision that surprised even himself. His blade sliced cleanly through the zombie, its body collapsing at his feet.

Himeno noticed, nodding approvingly. "That’s it, Kazuichi. You’re starting to tap into it."

But there was no time to celebrate. The undead kept coming, more relentless than before, their grotesque forms illuminated by the flickering flames that Himeno continued to control. Kazuichi gritted his teeth, focusing on the energy coursing through him. He could feel it, like a current beneath his skin—raw, powerful, and still unfamiliar.

He charged forward, his movements fluid as he cut down another zombie with a swift strike. But then, something shifted. The power surged again, more intensely this time, and Kazuichi felt it take over. His body moved on its own, faster and stronger than before, as if he were no longer in control.

Thud! Thud!

Two zombies went down in rapid succession, their bodies crumbling to the ground. But the rush of power was overwhelming, almost too much to contain. Kazuichi staggered back, his breathing labored as he tried to regain control.

Himeno noticed his struggle and moved to his side, sending another burst of fire to clear the remaining zombies. "Kazuichi, focus," she urged, her voice firm but encouraging. "Don’t let it overwhelm you. You control the power—it doesn’t control you."

Kazuichi clenched his fists, trying to steady his racing heart. He took a deep breath, forcing himself to calm down. Slowly, the surge of energy began to ebb, settling back into a manageable flow. He could still feel it, simmering just beneath the surface, but this time he was in control.

"I think I’m starting to get it," he muttered, his voice strained but determined.

Himeno smiled, nodding in approval. "Good. Keep practicing. You’ll master it in no time."

As the last of the zombies fell, the world grew quiet once again. The night had fully descended by now, the sky above a deep, velvety black. Only the faint glow of Himeno’s dying flames illuminated the path ahead.

Kazuichi wiped the blood from his blade, exhaling heavily. His body was tired, his muscles aching from the exertion, but there was a strange sense of satisfaction deep within him. He was learning, slowly but surely, to harness the power that had awakened within him. And with Himeno by his side, guiding him, he felt more confident than ever that he could master it.

"We should keep moving," Himeno said after a moment, glancing toward the direction of the stronghold. "It’s not safe to linger out here for too long."

Kazuichi nodded in agreement, sheathing his weapon as they continued their journey. Though the undead had been dealt with for now, he knew more would come as the night wore on. The stronghold was their only safe haven, and they needed to reach it before the next wave of zombies appeared.

As they walked, Himeno glanced at Kazuichi from the corner of her eye. "You’re doing well, you know," she said, her tone casual but sincere. "You’ve come a long way since we last fought together."

Kazuichi chuckled softly, though there was a hint of disbelief in his voice. "I’m still not anywhere near your level, though. Controlling fire like that? That’s something else."

Himeno shrugged modestly. "It’s just a matter of practice. You’ll get there."

They continued walking, the path ahead gradually becoming more familiar as they neared the stronghold. The sound of distant snarls echoed in the night, but for now, they were safe. Together, they would face whatever challenges lay ahead.

As the stronghold’s towering walls came into view, Kazuichi stole one last glance at Himeno. There was still so much he wanted to ask her—so much he needed to understand about her disappearance, her powers, and what had happened to her after Yamanashi fell. But for now, he was just grateful to have her by his side once again.
