Chapter 230: Towards Sendai

The wind whistled through the barren landscape as the group set off toward Sendai. The cold morning air bit at their faces, but none of them paid much attention. Their focus was locked on the path ahead. The goal was simple—make it to Sendai, take down the Aberrants, and secure the top spot in the rankings. But first, a quick stopover at Kazuichi’s stronghold for supplies and final preparations.

Kazuichi led the way, eyes narrowed as he scanned the horizon. It had been some time since he’d been back to his stronghold, and he wasn’t sure what to expect. Behind him, the rest of the team followed closely, their footsteps crunching on the frost-covered ground.

Arisu adjusted the strap of her pack, her face set in determination. "How far is it to Kazuichi’s stronghold?" she asked, glancing over at Ayaka, who carried a map.

Ayaka squinted at the worn paper, her brow furrowing in concentration. "Not too far. If we keep this pace, we’ll reach it by mid-afternoon."

"Good," Jurou said, cracking his knuckles. "We’ll need all the supplies we can get before we head into the real fight. No sense going in half-prepared."

Lea, who had been quiet for most of the journey, chimed in, her tone light but serious. "Better to rest up while we can, too. Once we hit Sendai, there won’t be any breaks."

Kazuichi remained silent, his thoughts already on the stronghold. His mind raced with memories of the place—the walls he had helped build, the people who had trusted him with their safety. It wasn’t the biggest or most fortified of strongholds, but it had always been enough. Hopefully, nothing’s changed too much.

As the hours passed, the group fell into a steady rhythm, their boots thudding against the earth in unison. The terrain was rough, the ground cracked and broken in places, but they moved with purpose, keeping their focus sharp. The air grew colder as they pressed on, and the distant mountains loomed like jagged teeth against the sky.

They encountered a few straggling zombies along the way—nothing too dangerous. Kazuichi dispatched them with quick, efficient strikes, electricity crackling from his fingertips as the undead fell with sharp thuds onto the frozen ground.

Jurou stepped over the last of the corpses, wiping his hands on his pants. "Not much of a challenge, huh?"

"Don’t get too comfortable," Ayaka warned, her gaze fixed ahead. "The real threats are still out there."

Lea nodded, her eyes sharp as she scanned the horizon. "She’s right. These zombies are nothing compared to what we’ll face in Sendai. Aberrants are a different breed."

Kazuichi remained quiet, but his grip on his weapon tightened. He knew all too well what awaited them in Sendai. Aberrants—mutated, vicious, and far more dangerous than the usual undead. He’d faced them before, and the memory still made his pulse quicken. We’ll have to be at our best when we get there.

The sky darkened slightly as afternoon approached, and the group finally spotted the familiar silhouette of Kazuichi’s stronghold in the distance. It was a modest structure, nestled against the side of a hill, with sturdy wooden walls and a watchtower perched at the top. Smoke rose faintly from the chimneys, a sign that the people inside were still managing to hold things together. 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

"There it is," Kazuichi said, breaking his silence as he gestured toward the stronghold. "We’ll rest here for a bit, gather what we need, and then head out."

Arisu sighed in relief. "Finally, a break."

The group picked up the pace as they approached the gates of Kazuichi’s stronghold. The guards posted at the entrance straightened up as they recognized him, offering nods of respect as they pushed open the heavy wooden doors.

"Kazuichi," one of the guards greeted, his voice rough from the cold. "It’s been a while. Thought we wouldn’t see you again."

Kazuichi offered a small smile. "Still here. Just passing through this time."

The stronghold was alive with activity as they entered. People moved about, tending to chores and preparing for the harsh winter ahead. It wasn’t much different from when Kazuichi had last been here, though there was a noticeable tension in the air—likely the result of the increasing Aberrant activity in the north.

"Welcome back!" a familiar voice called out as a young man rushed over. It was Ryota. His face lit up as he approached, slapping Kazuichi on the back with a grin. "You’ve been gone too long, man. People were starting to wonder if you’d gotten yourself killed."

Kazuichi chuckled. "Not yet. Got a mission in Sendai. Just stopping by to gear up."

Ryota raised an eyebrow, his smile fading slightly. "Sendai, huh? Dangerous territory. You sure you’re ready for that?"

"We don’t have a choice," Kazuichi replied, his tone firm. "It’s the final day of the training camp, and we need the points."

Nodding his head, Ryota spoke although the concern never left his eyes. "Well, you know where the supplies are. Take what you need. Just... be careful out there."

"We will," Kazuichi promised, clapping Ryota on the shoulder before heading off with the others toward the supply depot.

Inside the stronghold, the group quickly got to work gathering the supplies they needed. Food, water, medical kits, ammunition—everything had to be packed and ready for the journey ahead. Kazuichi moved with purpose, checking off items on his mental list as he went.

Ayaka sorted through a crate of ammunition, handing out clips and grenades to the others. "Make sure you’ve got enough. We don’t know how long we’ll be out there."

Jurou tested the weight of a new set of throwing knives, twirling one between his fingers before sliding it into his belt. "Got plenty of blades. I’m good to go."

Lea packed up a bag of medical supplies, her expression focused. "I’ll carry the med kit. Just in case."

Kazuichi finished packing his own gear, slinging a heavy pack over his shoulder. He glanced at the others, nodding once. "That should be everything. Let’s not waste any more time."

The group gathered near the entrance, checking their weapons one last time. The sun had climbed higher in the sky now, casting long shadows over the stronghold walls. The wind had picked up, sending shivers down their spines as they prepared to head back into the wilds.

Ryota appeared once more, standing at the gates as they approached. "You guys better come back in one piece," he said, his voice gruff but genuine. "We’ll be waiting for your return."

"We’ll make it," Kazuichi assured him, gripping his weapon tightly.

With that, the group stepped out of the stronghold once more, the gates closing behind them with a heavy thud. The journey to Sendai awaited, and there was no turning back now.

As they set off again, the cold wind howled around them, but their determination burned hotter than ever. Sendai was just on the horizon, and with it, the final challenge that would decide their fate.
